Think about it for a second. So was Fable now that I think about it... these games were both really fucking great... it just hit me...
Dude... this game was underrated
They where great and fun, with some flaws, but Peter Molyneux always manage to promise things that don't end up in the games.
wow... really made me think...
never heard anyone ever say that black and white 2 is underrated. everyone said it's good
I searched high and low for this game and ended up buying a physical copy from a retail store out of childish nostalgia.
The game was mundane after the Asia level.
Yeah but I think that reputation was way overblown... these games are full blown classics.
Fable? That game was fucking AMAZING for what it was. So was Black and White.
Yeah, he over promised stuff but people blew that way out of proportion. Kind of like how Kotaku and Polygon blow the whole "feminist" shit out of proportion and people buy into it. His latest games sucked but to say that Fable and B+W aren't classics is bizarre, they clearly are top tier
Yeah it loses steam but so do all games, the atmosphere is incredible.
The reason I had a "dude..." moment is because I totally forgot about this game.
The little characters, the goats, there was so much going on in the little villages, it was actually kind of amazing. There was so much character in these games. You can tell they were a real passion project. I didn't realize how good they were until now. Everyone was all focused on pretty much constantly hating Molyneux at the time so I kind of just overlooked how cool these games really were.
I mean, there wasn't a SINGLE review that didn't mention that whole narrative about him promising things, that became his whole reputation. Instead of the cool quality of the game...
Same thing with Spore and same thing with No Mans Sky, probably. Sure, the games are extremely flawed but honestly they have more soul and passion in them as works of art than most games will ever dream of having. I haven't played NMS so don't bring that into it... this wasn't meant to be about that
I actually think Molyneux might really legitimately have been a visionary
Huh, I fully expected it to be on GoG. Good thing I still have my discs for the games.
The first one was a classic. The build up was great and unlocking abilites/powers felt like a natural progression.
The music, voice acting and everything was on par.
Sequel was nice but felt too systematic
I actually preferred B&W 2 because of the more direct army stuff and more focused creature training
Hype and critics have always been a terrible double edged sword for video games. Most of they're just outright bad though.
>Mentioning Spore
It's not even a tiny shadow of what it could have been before EA destroyed it.
is it just me or was fighting utterly boring in b&w? i remember crawling forward with my city and throw stones until i couldn't find more
It was still interesting for what it was though. People focus too much on "what could have been" instead of what is actually presented. I'm not saying it was the best game ever by any means, but it didn't really deserve the universal bashing it got.
Spore is mostly fine m8 if you didn't listen to any of its marketing before release
The initial stages are reasonably fun and don't wear out their welcome since they're so short
What absolutely killed the space stage for me is that you have to do every tiny little thing yourself
Terraforming was nice though
This. Spore is a 5-6/10 game if you completely ignore the entire development process. If you keep in mind what was promised, it's lower than 3.
Honestly I didn't really play past the second city when you start facing the other God
I did play the first city around 5 or 6 times. The little touches that come to my memory now just really fill my heart with strong nostalgia. The hand that picks up the wood and drops it, the way the food can get contaminated from the animal turds... LOL
The way the rocks crush the houses, and you can throw people into the water. It's very off kilter. And the two little dudes, and you help the drowning person in the beginning. It really was a great vision that seems like it came directly from his mind onto the screen. I have to commend that. And the rocks and shit that you discover and play... the first island really was full of mystery. The atmosphere and game engine is reallllly cool.
Also the animals were cool, even though the control system sucked. But it was cool how you could cast spells with the mouse.
I don't know why, I just got the biggest wave of sadness because I remember kind of taking that game for granted and going along with the Molyneux hate train at the time. The thing is, thinking back on it now I realized how much love was put into that game.
I'm about to reinstall this shit and try to go deeper into the game to see if it gets cooler with new spells. No idea
>that fuckng lion finally being free of his master
;_;
Fable was a very normal and very basic action game/rpg thing, and while it had some features that were interesting, the rest of it was nothing special compared to other things we had at the time.
b&w was interesting, but also a typical raise your pet kind of game. I can see why people got bored.
>no god sim has even come close to competing with the original B&W even after all these years.
pretty mad about it desu. I'd help make one but I don't know enough about the programming side to make it work, I'm more of an artist than a programmer.
Black & White 2 sucked ass.
It's inferior to 1 in every way except visuals.
The first game is excellent. Black & White is easilly one of my favourite PC games.
>I'm about to reinstall this shit and try to go deeper into the game to see if it gets cooler with new spells. No idea.
Prepare to get your mind blown when you find Megablast Increase.
Were there even any god sims since then besides the B&W games?
it's not like god sim is a big market anyways. isn't it more of a theme than a genre?
I wouldn't say that. What genre do yo thnk B&W belongs to, then?
Creature handling was a fucking bitch.
Everything else was awesome tho.
Dungeon keeper 2 came out before it so I guess not. There was Godus but that was made by Molymeme and it's fucking awful and it's essentially a mobile game.
There was also 'from dust' but god damn did ubisoft drop the ball on that one.
If you consider city building games too then you have SC4 and maybe cities skyline but they're not the same.
I seriously doubt a major company would ever make one ever again (unless an indie one got hugely popular) it's certainly a project a small team would have to make.
Yeah, but it was kinda okay after the first games, since everyone expected it.
Most of the times it was just "Oh Uncle Peter, talking silly stuff again."
Also he kept apologizing, saying he couldn't help it
city builder, management, some slow paced RTS, strategy. Populus or how it's calles is a better example for RTS with god theme.
Both this and Fable were actually severly overrated and never as fun as promised.
Black & White 1 is better at teaching your creature and being a god and shit.
Black & White 2 is better at Armies, Citybuilding and has more Terraforming.
I still prefer BW1 because at how the creature AI learned how to react and do things, without even you doing all the shit.
I was really sad at how easy they made it in BW2.
If BW2 had the same AI Learning and charme from the first (Those little guys you had to help and stuff.) it'd bne the better game.
The game was slow and buggy AS FUCK at release.
Also, no multiplayer in BW2.
Comparing Creatures and battling your friend was the hottest shit.
Lol in Fable I immediately played a bad character. FUCK it's so funny now that I think about it. My dude was fucking black with flies all over him. I killed entire villages and then came home to my wife. There wasn't all that much to the game content, however I will say that the general atmosphere of the game really was about as good as it can get.
From Dust looked like it was going to be incredible, I guess it didn't end up doing much
True that.
I also really had alot of fun with the AI Skirmishes in general, but at LAN Parties having fun with the Creatures, wrecking everything themselves, was quite an experience.
This, don't choke on your nostalgia OP
I think a lot of people fell for that. Basic as fuck if I recall
Black & White 1 is a timeless fun-packed classic
Picking up shit and throwing stuff all of the realm is always guaranteed fun. The Creature still has some of the best vidya AI there is.
It's just bug-ridden af.
>underrated
What the fuck are you on about.
Everyone has played Fable and Black & White.
you have to be 18 to post on this site son
If you think about it though, what are videogames? Those two games both are examples of what happens when you look at what videogames actually are, and then modify it and raise it up to the next level. What actually makes a game great? It's not the "story," it's not the "voice acting," it's not the "gameplay." It's not a "combination of those things."
It's the actual experience you have playing it. And what makes that experience? Looking at games more critically and you notice that you can see through all the "tricks." Having cut scenes that progress the story, for instance, is not a game. It's an interactive movie. Looking at how the mechanics work, you notice that most is just an illusion of depth, and your imagination has to fill in the gaps. Naturally. But if you can "see" the trick, then you naturally the immersion diminishes.
A videogame isn't defined by the fact that it is a "game", like chess, with a winner and a loser. It is defined by the fact that it is a virtual experience made using computer programming and media technology, it isn't real. Black and White understands this definition of "videogames" and then sets forth to enhance the artform from that perspective.
And not in a trite, one dimensional way like Dear Esther or Depression Quest. Those are intellectual exercises, and yes they are important in their own way, if only to demonstrate the limits of what not to do.
Black and White is a full blown attempt to make something great and medium defining.
I came here to tell you that you're wrong. I've never played Black & White or the first Fable.
>make all breeders male
>the workforce consists mostly of pregnant women dragging their kids around
>the dudes just hang around the center of town banging any passing woman without a huge belly
it had its moments
Not it wasn't. It and Fable were mediocre games that got astounding reviews. They were overrated.
>black and white 2
>great
No, fuck you. it was shit, the whole army and siege bullshit, thats why there WERE Rts games.
Fucking french should died in ww2.
