>mfw when inserting Metal Gear Solid during monster generation gets you a camo-colored, headband-wearing, metal-plated fist (and feet) wielding Soldier Gaboo
Monster Rancher (whatever version - "2" for me) thread! What did you... -Raise at the very beginning -Your first combination -Your favorite monster -Your fondest memories~
I can't remember that far back, but I cleared it this spring using a Wracky/Pixie. It's such an annoying creature to raise, but I maxed out the three important stats so she made quick work out of everything. I'll probably revisit on another rainy day when I'm not working.
Jason Price
I was a nintendo/pc kid, and so was basically everyone I knew. What exactly is Monster Rancher? Seems kinda neat.
Dominic Edwards
It's a hot-blooded goo blob, but close. I had a Pixie blast me into next week with a long range ability recently. That's what I get for taking part in the New Years cup (where any and all monsters can compete) with just a C-rank. Pixie best? Probably not...but cute!
Hudson Baker
That triangled dinosaur, i think it was called zuum or something?
>Your first combination Pixie x something
>Your favorite monster PixiexJill and those puppets
>Your fondest memories fapped to collette
Andrew King
Monster Rancher has traditionally been a monster raising simulator (very heavily menu-driven) that was popular for a time in the late 90s. Basically, the gimmick was that it would read the data from any CD you inserted and generate a monster accordingly. At the beginning you can't get every type of monster combination but there were still tons of possible types. There are also many "special" monsters that only came from specific CDs (IE the Soldier Gaboo from Metal Gear in the OP). The main gameplay was deciding what training methods you decide to use every week to increase your monster's stats. It also involved how you fed it, how often you would rest it, what items you gave it, and more. You would then battle them in tournaments against other in-game monsters for money and other items to increase the monster and trainer rank. Doing so gets you more money to buy whatever you need as well as unlocking monster types and more. There was also a spin-off cartoon show and a card-battle game based on the same monsters/universe.
It's a slower-paced game because much of it is menu choices with a simple battle structure every so often. Something good to play while listening to some music (the in-game music gets old fast) or casually watching something.
Samuel Ross
I raised a Zuum at the very beginning as well but it had a Jell subtype. Loved that little buddy...of course I had no idea what I was doing at the time so it most likely died earlier than it should have. I remember it got me the phoenix feather though!
Didn't event know a Pixie x Jill combo existed. "Snowy" (pic)
>fapped to collette Too much of a tomboy for me!
Christopher Perez
>-Raise at the very beginning I believe the first monster I ever raised was a Dino variant in 2. That was with a friend though. The first monster I remember raising by myself was a Merman Naga named Aqualad.
>-Your first combination Don't remember.
>-Your favorite monster Naga is my favorite, followed by Golem.
>-Your fondest memories~ When raising my first Golem, after he got really old, I had enough money to let him retire and rest for his remaining days. During one of his weeks off, he said he wanted to fight, but the only tourney around was one of the Big Four. I entered him in, and he just barely managed to clutch out the win against the champ. It was super close and super excited. We celebrated his victory, and he ended up passing away that night.
Asher Rogers
Too bad most ??? subspecies have magic AIDS and drop dead faster.
>Raise at the very beginning Hare >Your first combination Hare/Tiger >Your favorite monster Ducklon (Beaclon/Ducken), it's probably the most retarded looking monster Your fondest memories Playing an INT/SPD Big Blue with only Cyclone. Finally kicking Regretti''s ass for the first time. He was the most cancerous of the lot.
Ayden Jackson
Oakleyman was the biggest asshole in part 2.
That dude should not have been in that ranked tournament.
William Myers
...
Samuel Adams
Thanks for the story user! Your Golem was saving up the last little bit of his life for one more big fight!
Yeah, I believe I read something along those lines about the lifespan of ??? monsters.
That IS a very...odd looking monster. I found another one on an Fbook page that has all the cards quickly viewable (pic related - "Eggplantern": Beaclon/???)
Colton Moore
I also ran into Oakleyman early and I believe I even reset once because he sucker punched me and then just dodged everything else I threw at him. Next time around I KO'd him like the vanilla bitch he was!
Luke Hill
Gaboos are assholes in MR2 >Oakleyman >Regretti >Ordorf >Mad Clay(expedition boss) They exist to fuck your shit up.
Jordan Jenkins
Monster Rancher 2
>Raise at the very beginning Mocchi
>Your first combination Mocchi + some wolf I think?
>Your favorite monster Some big red dragon monster, mainly because I won so many tournament with that.
>Your fondest memories Pretty much when I was getting all those rare ingredients for rare monsters.
Dylan Jenkins
I just remember him kicking my ass over and over again in that game, and constantly stopping my monster from reaching a new rank.
Him and some of those Hares. They dodge like crazy, and you can't KO them because they have that GRIT ability or whatever that lets them constantly hang on.
>yfw you do a 50+ guts move and it misses
Jeremiah Cook
Well that's their thing. That's what the beach expedition is for. And always save up guts, attacking at higher guts is more accurate.
Jack Wood
Is there a picture that shows all the monsters in the game?
Joseph Evans
>Your fondest memories I rekt an edge lord kid that mained jokers, spoopy dulahans and spoopy dragon with a pixie thanks for its "mp" removing skills.
Matthew Kelly
I think I remember Ordorf being a pain as well. I'm getting revenge by raising a Gaboo of my own! Honestly, I was just unsatisfied with the mons I was getting from the CDs I had and was surprised by the Soldier Gaboo so I stuck with it (for now).
I never raised any Mocchi because I thought they looked so dumb. Maybe if it had a neat subtype but that one is probly near the bottom of my list. Dragons are pretty sweet but you need to get further in the game to get them. A lot of their subtypes look really cool!
Early on I never did anything but train so my stats were usually high enough to roll through E and D rank but I've gotten impatient and tried anyway...with terrible results. The speedy mons are always the worst and YES that damn GRIT ability. "Hell yeah, now stay dow-DAMN IT!"
(pic is another monster I did not realize existed - "Forward Golem")
Or there is an Fbook page that lets you quickly flip through the card designs but only for Monster Rancher 2. Won't let me post the link so just google "Monster Rancher 2 cards".
Colton Johnson
Holy fuck I remember the name oakleyman from the tournament, my fat half-retarded friend kept calling him oklahoma
Levi Barnes
Mocchi are the jack of all trades so it's not exactly easy to raise. They also have a ton of techniques, and at least 4 tech chains.
Jack Howard
My favorites definetely Naga, I played through the game last year and raised a Physical Pure Breed and a Naga/Plant Special Attacker with no complaints
I detest those damn lazy ape monsters as well as Pixies, those sluts cant take a hit ever
Ryder Garcia
I guess I waste my guts way too much. I usually throw it out right at the beginning...most likely because I'm impatient. If I know their defense is weak I will do it right off the bat to try for that easy KO.
What did you use? I never even did the whole PvP aspect as I never knew anyone who also had the game (or a save file). I wonder if there is a way to emulate it and use the save data to do some eventual PvP battles if I give it to someone. Hmm...sounds like a pain. Might be easier to just search around for someone who has it and do it legit.
Joshua Hernandez
Here is a semi-cool looking monster I might want to try sometime (wish pic angle and quality was better): "Plated Arrow"- Arrow Head/Durahan A lot of the Durahan types look pretty sweet imo.

No, post odd-looking monsters instead! Sumopion [Arrow Head / ???]

>A pureblood Gaboo from the market >Can't remember >A Henger/Golem I had with maxed out POW but shit everything >just chillin and playing snowball
Josiah Lopez
spam kiss and slap, pixie's guts regen is bullshit while dragons and jokers have piss poor regen
Brody Russell
I never played any of the Monster Rancher games, but I remember reading a big list in a magazine about some of the possible monsters you could get from games and music and stuff and I was so fucking intrigued but I never got a hold of the game itself
Aaron Carter
Henger/Golem seems like it would be a pain to KO! (pic related) "Gobi [Golem / Henger] - It is said that this monster was a weapon for ancient wars."
I need an intelligence monster at some point anyway and Pixie seem like the obvious choice. My Soldier Gaboo obviously does not have shit for INT so I just pass up expeditions because I know it will barely be able to find anything while investigating.
I bet I read the same list that you did. I only ever owned MR2 (and one of the GBA games...I think maybe the card battle as well). I believe the magazine I read was about MR3 so I was excited to see what it contained...the answer was a ton.
Josiah Lewis
Oh wait...I mixed up the types. THIS is what you were talking about.
069 Gaia [Henger / Golem] - It is a mechanical monster with a soul from the Golem species.
Mason Fisher
This game was my jam growing up. Too bad that the only way to make quick progress was to design a twink hare that could dodge everything or a glass canon gaboo that could one shot everything.
Robert Martinez
I was thinking of trying this but I'm not sure how it works with PCSX2, does it work with swapping ISOs?
William Roberts
Was the DS Monster Rancher any good?
Easton Lee
Raise a Golem or Naga and just one-shot every enemy.
It's always awesome to see everyone forfeit in fear of getting OHKO'd by that giant stone beast.
Leo Kelly
Yeah, you sort of need that first "starter monster" to get everything else you need.
I had it installed on a flash cart and played it over the course of a long vacation/flights. I had fun with it anyway. I think I remember the monster generation required drawing small random pictures so it's not quite as "exciting" as seeing what your Brittney Spears CD holds, but it does the job I guess. "I wonder what THIS dick drawing will create!"
Samuel Hughes
Monster Rancher 4 was neat because you had a bit more control over the monster during a fight.
Overall the games don't have much long-term appeal though because who the fuck has dozens of CDs any more?
Jordan Nguyen
What was that monster on the bottom right, I don't think I ever saw it in the game.
Lincoln Wilson
Dunno why, I always like Mocchi, it looks so cute.
Ah, I remember I completely lost interest playing the game after my Dragon died. Watching him/her grow bigger each year is just so sweet.
It's been a long time since I played MR 2 but I think I named my Dragon Dragon
My other favourite monster is black Phoenix monster (forgot the name) that I got from CD shrine.
Thomas Green
Didn't know that about 4. 2 was my first and only for a long time and I believe is often the favorite of those who have played the series.
I think a bigger issue with its long-term appeal was the fact that it was trying to compete with Pokemon and Digimon at the time. It had a neat gimmick but the show was meh and it could not have sold much merch. There is also the issue that the game is primarily menus so I could imagine the average kid getting bored with it...not to mention just starting out without knowing anything can be VERY frustrating. It's really easy to stress out and injure a monster if you don't know what you are doing. Plus, no matter what, the NPC ALWAYS tells you that your monster seems ready for the tournaments (unless it's tired) even if the stats of your monster are really low.
Pic: "Springer [Hopper / Metalner] - Its body shows a soft luster because of its Metalner blood."
Jose Scott
That's funny because I was actually JUST thinking about that when I first put in the game. I had no idea until just now. It seems it's actually...
Datonare [Tiger / Zuum] - No one equals its speed when it runs through the forest.
Jaxon White
I used to play the GBA version and put in curse words, since you put in letters to make monsters in that one.
It wasn't a very good game.
Jack King
Do you think it's legal to fuck pixies in the MR world?
Matthew Collins
Pretty much the same for me. I lost interest when my first "big" monster died.
>I named my Dragon Dragon I...don't know what I expected.
I actually just noticed that the black Phoenix existed. Neat!
I remember that as well. I also remember it not being that great.
Just don't cum inside and have retarded monster pixie babies.
Henry Martin
Durahan is GOAT.
Joshua Morales
Kung Fu Hare [Hare / ???] - It trains daily to master the ancient art of kung fu.
Another I didn't know existed. I want one now!
Grayson Wilson
>currently rewatching MR >see Monster Rancher thread what a good day this is
David Gomez
Dude, you like monster ranger as well? Great taste my nigga. law is still for fags though
Asher Jenkins
I want to marry her.
Kevin Morgan
Glad to be of service, user!
Happy Mask [Gali / ???] - It's bright expression makes you forget about your worries.
Austin Rivera
Pink Zilla [Zilla / Pixie] - It has a beautiful white body, and strong confidence.
Yeah...ok. Pass.
Anthony Moore
>didn't play the first monster rancher epsxe disc swappin works right?
>Your first combination Naga/Golem an excellent combo for Skill/Strength

>Find scratched up PSX Disney Hercules in the woods near house >Gives Pheonix when scanned
9 Year old peergroup lost our collective shit.
Jaxon Gonzalez
That reminds me that some day I should try out a Monol. Seemed kind of boring and uninteresting to look at but with the right subtype it could be alright.
Nice find! I would have also lost my shit.
Pic: Bowwow [Mew / Tiger] - This monster is related to the tiger family. Gotta go fast
Colton Lewis
Chef [Ghost / ???] - It flies around cooking a large variety of food at one time.
Caleb Thompson
>-Raise at the very beginning Arrowhead >-Your first combination Some Zuum combo >-Your favorite monster Probably the Ape/Gali combo monster in 2. In 4 I had a solid team of mons that were really based. I definetely had a Lessie and a Night Sickle. I really hope I have my memory card somewhere so I can replay one day. >-Your fondest memories~ I think my fondest memories were always rising my monsters and watching them go up in Rank. the team aspect of 4 was really well-done. It felt like my guys were a little family with their own personalities.
Jeremiah Barnes
>Raise at the very beginning Either Zuum or Mocchi. I don't really remember which one I picked first to be honest.
>Your first combination Zuum/Arrow Head I believe. I like how it used some of the AH's animations.
>Your favorite monster Phoenix. I was hyped as fuck when I figured out how to obtain it. It was also by far the best monster I've ever trained (over 700 INT, which is not too bad considering I didn't use any of those min-maxing guides)
>-Your fondest memories~ Figuring out I can get monsters from my CDs/DVDs (we didn't have the cartoon here so I legitimately didn't know you could do that) Going to an expedition for the first time. Getting my shit wrecked by a random Siva invade in the Volcano errantry. Finding a Golden Fruit.
Monster Rancher 2 remake when?
Luis Williams
I might have to check out that whole team thing. Didn't realize they added that in 4.
Going on the first expedition was super hype. My Zuum/Jell (first raised monster) even came back with a Phoenix feather!
Pic: Clear Suezo [Suezo / Jell] - It is a Jell monster that has transformed itself to Suezo.

Isaiah Lopez
Which monster had the overall best stats and skills and of course life expectancy possible?
I'm assuming it's either a variation of dullahan(top tier life/offense/defense/skill. good int and mediocre speed. very long lifespan) and for int monsters its probably phoenix.
Ian Miller
>he feeds his monsters potatoes
Isaac Martin
>Monster Rancher 2 remake when? Never unfortunately. It's just not popular enough to warrant doing so I believe. They lost the battling monster...battle to Pokemon (and, to a lesser degree, even Digimon).
They would need to incorporate some form of digital data to create a truly unique monster for every user. It would most likely have to be a mobile game (of which I believe there actually is one. No idea how it functions though.
What would be some unique ways to generate code that it reads to create ultra-custom monsters? Might even need to be combo'd with an engine to generate the monster piece by piece. Gotta step up the game to even get people interested. Ideas?

>What would be some unique ways to generate code that it reads to create ultra-custom monsters? QR codes?
Ian Anderson
Can you emulate the PS1 version and have disc swapping? I played through MR2 advance and the password system was cool, but the RNG and battle system in that version were straight up bullshit.
Every Monster/Pixie fusion looks slutty and ugly IIRC Pretty funny though
Christian Scott
It would preferably be something harder to pass around online, but nowadays that's pretty much impossible. Everyone would just download the best monsters from some website and be done with it.
Elijah Powell
I don't think I ever had a Zilla in MR2. Was it too rare?
Nicholas Collins
My old copy of Tarzan gave me a naga/gali so fucking op for a starter.
Kayden Hernandez
Shit, that looks bretty cool.
Andrew Adams
One day I'll do all those monster cards...
Christian Cox
Holy shit I loved the hell out of this game, I didn't think anybody else remembered it.
>Raised at the very beginning Suezo. In Monster Rancher 1 Suezo is born with two sets of fins that disappear when it ages. I always thought 'baby' forms were really neat and wish they never removed them.
>Your first combination Can't remember. Probably some hybrid of free market monsters so likely Dino/Tiger or Tiger/Dino.
>Your favorite monster Octopee and all of its variants. But if it's from the originals, it's gotta be Karone (Worm/Hare). I like how worms deform in various animations, growing spider legs or extending their stinger like a spear.
>Your fondest memories Playing MR1 and MR3 as a kid with my sister for weeks on end, and taking turns raising the same monsters. We'd always decide together which monster to raise next although I was who did the battles 90% of the time.
I'd give anything to go back to those days. Man, I love Monster Rancher.
Zachary Richardson
>Corone That's cute user, if I ever get around to playing again I might try and raise one to finally get a beaclon.
Fuck if I know, I've been playing Monster Rancher ever since I was really little. I remember raising a lot of dinos as a kid though. And nagas. Typical shit little boys would like I guess. I never could make Golem worth anything though.
-Your first combination
No idea, I remember mixing that lobster thing with Dino and it being awesome though.
-Your favorite monster
WORM. NOT BEACLON. WORM.
-Your fondest memories
One of my favorite things about Monster Rancher as a kid was that I could never beat the games. Monster dying and having to raise new ones ala Digimon World 1 meant I could play the game as long as I wanted. Being too young and stupid to discover exploits, and having dial up back in the day, I played Monster Rancher 2 and 3 for years without beating them. I eventually did break 3 though, when I realized if you took any monster and exclusively raised Speed and its attacking stat of choice you'd never be hit and 1hko.
Bentley Campbell
I wrote the script and recorded all the footage I need to start a Monster Rancher retrospective series on youtube. I want to branch out to other shit afterwards like Digimon and other games I like a lot but I want to do Monster Rancher first. Gonna start off with Monster Rancher Card Battle 2 for the playstation 1.
If I shill it here when I post it will you guys subscribe? Shits a lot of work. I did buy a 140 dollar blue yeti microphone though so feels good man.
Andrew Clark
Card Battle 2 is good stuff.
Justin Diaz
Gonna make a monster rancher clone where you scan mp3 to get monsters
Eli Long
Yes, it works. It's been asked twice before you. Read the posts.
I'd check it out. Sure!
Alexander Cruz
Except with plant. Plant/Pixie is top class.
Ian Murphy
I'd check it out, though I never played Card Battle
Easton Sanders
I had actually started developing a cheesy Monster Rancher-inspired mobile game a while back, with the gimmick being creatures are generated using your GPS location as the seed.
I lost all motivation when Pokemon GO became a thing, for obvious reasons.
William Gray
not barcodes
Hudson White
I had thought of that, but I figured you could just google barcodes by the truckload and it'd remove the fun of actually "searching" for new monsters, and if it had any popularity at all, everyone would just copy the same barcodes with the rarest guys.
GPS coordinates were the only thing I could think of that would mirror CDs in that everyone would have access to completely different creatures.
