What's the status of Open XCom? Last I touched it, it was an unplayable alpha.
This is how teammates die from other teammates.
It is playable, has mod support and the latest beta build supports TFTD+mods.
It's cool.
I spent a hundred hours on it.
It's very much playable, there are many mods for download and there's a version for TFTD. I think they're working on OpenApoc right now.
Anyone here tried the X-Piratez mod for the Open XCom?
Looks fun as fuck!
>use adblock before visiting this trash website you fag:
www.rockpapershotgun.com/2016/03/30/x-piratez-xcom-mod/
Does it support TFTD properly yet?
>3 cyberdiscs
Abort mission.
real link with real updated mod
I miss ModdedCommander. His playthroughs were fun
It's a shame that the name is so unfortunate.
>OpenApoc
Still a long ways to go, they did the basic UI and some game mechanics down, but it's still just frameworks basically.
Also, they're a different team altogether. The OpenXCOM team did say they'd help with OpenApoc but don't know to what extent.
It's pretty fun even though it really strays far from the original XCOM experience. Still unfinished though, but adequately playable.
When will they merge XCom and TFTD together?
Any sort of mod or texture pack that makes OG XCOM better looking? Beat EW awhile ago and I wanted to start this one, but the graphics are a bit hard to look at
i miss the xcom and baldur's gate playthrough threads.
Are you serious? All you need is OpenXcom for starters. You set a higher resolution and check which battlescape view works best for you and that's it. Do it, you won't regret it.
really, i find the graphics really straightforward. in which situations do you find it hard too see what's going on?
I meant the sprites and such look pretty aged, but for the sake of not being a grafix fag, I'll give it a try. Hope OpenXCOM works with a pirated version
postin an old screencap i still have saved from one of these threads like 2 years ago.
Never heard of it, can someone give me the deets?
what do you mean "with a pirated version"?
isn't openxcom just the original xcom but free?
a strategy game where you defend and kill the aliens attacking earth. boils down to building a base, researching alien tech, shooting down UFOs and going to crash sites / terror sites to finish them off.
sure, do you like precedurally generated levels? do you like dungeons and dragons dice rolling combat in your isometric tactical game? do you absolutely love cheap deaths and other nuisances such as your team randomly killing your other members just because LOLINSANITY or mind control from across the map? do you like games where there is literally only one (1) strategy that most people don't learn from trial and error but just google? do you enjoy losing in a game like team fortress 2 by a landslide because of something out of your control? you would love it
Firaxis confused everything and made it difficult to talk about the original.
All these fucking samename reboots are obscuring essential game history and embarassing themselves by being nowhere near as seminal or influential.
no, you still need the data. think of it like a source port, there are no free sprites yet
OpenXcom still requires the game files for it to run. And yes, the pirated version will work too. Just be sure to read the installation instructions.
>i only like deterministic games
War isn't deterministic, scrub. Things go wrong and you adapt. That's what makes it thrilling. Or you can just savescum like you have the Dagger of Time.
>I have stood outside slum buildings and razed them to the ground with plasma fire rather than waste my time and resources checking floor by floor simply because the Senate doesn't give a SHIT about civilian or building damage in slums.
You know the worst thing? the really damning thing?
I'd do it again.
So here's to the "good guys"
this.
also what's up with the original game having 2 names anyways? x-com: enemy unknown and ufo defence or something like that, i think it was related to releases in different parts of the world
>because LOLINSANITY or mind control from across the map?
This is one thing I always mod in OpenXcom to work as line of sight. Otherwise it's complete bullshit.
Ufo was a banned word in America for some time it's why they had to change the name.
oh fuck i hated lategame when the mindcontrol shit started.
half my team always went berserk/panic/got killed by berserker
Pain and suffering.
But also a lot of fun!
i just googled something and that would make sense but apparently it doesn't
from wiki, "UFO: Enemy Unknown (marketed as "X-COM: UFO Defense" in North America" so both had the name UFO.
i'm pretty sure everyone has sort of a love-hate relationship with the old classic. it was incredibly frustrating at times but a really good game
Scifi horror tactics with a very effective atmosphere.
It could be a trademark squatter. That's why Soul Edge became Soul Blade then Soulcalibur. Some asshole tried to sue NAMCO because he owned a defunct company called Edge something.
You know this is how it'd go down if we had a real alien invasion.
TFTD remake when
there are no games that are deterministic, this game just doesn't handle it very good. it has a bullshit difficulty curve and its sequel is somehow worse about it. yeah yeah "GIT GUD AND USE THIS EXTREMELY RAILROADED STRATEGY", this isn't a good game and i will bet the newer games are much better
Yeah I've played Xcom but I've never heard of this Open Xcom malarkey
It's just a sourceport of the original with mod support and fixes.
>Alien invasion
We do this right now. Why risk infantry when you can just carpet bomb the target from the sky? XCOM Aliums are apparently too sneaky to just be glassed from the sky or else I'd just send the goddamn Skyhawk or Valkyrie or whatever its called to to nuke difficult intrusions from atmosphere.
Apocalypse might be fairly considered a weaker entry to the series, but its one of the games that really captures the feeling of a single-minded anti-alium force that views protection of citizens as a secondary (if even that) objective.
Hell its a viable endgame to completely disregard senate spending and just raid Sirius, gang ans InterStellar transport for supplies to use and sell. As long as you prevent their Alium control nobody is going to stop you, and corps raiding you are basically just free equipment if you set up good base defences.
Plus the aliums are more willing to exit their shitty but absolutely massive aircraft in apoc. There's nothing like securing the exits of a battleship, pressing play and just watching the HE/Plasma fireworks.
Apocalypse is my favourite entry in the series purely because of that paranoid atmosphere of who's under alien control and who isn't
Thoughts on Final Mod Pack?
It's basically porting the game to a better engine, I'm pretty sure they rewrote the whole thing. Lots of little improvements, fixes and changes that bring it to more modern standards.
agreed brother.
So many memories with Xcom. I have all these stories remembered from it, and the funny moments that occured.
Are there any mods for it that add new/good stuff but don't ruin it's vanilla feel?
Still can't fucking beat superhuman ironman.
Maybe I'll try again and gun for early psionics.
"UFO" is a generic word that can't be trademarked in the context of a game about UFOs
X-COM is meaningless bullshit that can be trademarked
I tried it before, but it feels like it's much harder to get into than the original XCom. I've logged countless hours in UFO Defence, but Apocalypse feels much more complex and unintuitive.
RIP VIPER, you're 80+ time units will be missed.
Fantastic fun if you've played the base game to death but also a weirdly balanced mess at times. Last time I played it I spent most of the game fighting TFTD's floater-tier equivalent ayys.
It's kind of hard to ruin the vanilla feel of xcom with mods. 95% of mods are just more items.
Check Final Mod Pack.
Damn. I want to try a new game but have something new. Maybe really big mods that add a new feel...? Or hardcore mods? Something new.
Final Mod Pack gives you maybe 5x the content but still handles like base UFO. I really like that one.
Try X-Piratez for something completely different
That's not an unreasonable assessment, it also suffers from some VERY PROTRACTED intrusions.
There's a reason I mentioned slums in my first post: slum maps are 8 levels of tiny fucking corridors and tight corners that will often be hiding exactly one fucking alien that refuses to come out and just die.
This is intolerable in the "new" action mode. In classic turn-based mode its a literal hell. But I fucking love it, there's something Apoc delivers that none of the others do: A cold war feeling.
I was hoping xcom2 would but it doesn't. its still great but it doesn't have that same feeling.
I remember someone made an extended vision mod that made the game way tactical, but he stopped working on it last I read. Is there anything else like it?
what are XCom threads?
I had a guy like Viper. He started as a rookie who was the only survivor of a bad mission, where we intercepted a Medium UFO and fought off a big army of sectoids from a farmhouse. After that I named him "Jackson" and he truely was a damn good one. Lost him on the final mission to mars.
Good old days.
One thing about playing this mod is that you can experience playing blind (in terms of research, enemies, etc.), something that the original game can no longer give you.
>you'll cowards won't even move 40 tiles
That's a huge risk, though if it pays off you essentially break the game. But goddamn is it hard.
XCOM threads were fun
So what version of XCom do I need for Open XCom?
Will we ever have them again...?
Doesn't matter. You follow the install instructions on OpenXcom, place everything in appropriate folders, patch the original game and you're ready to play.
Until someone is willing to do another screenshot LP or two
