Most of dark souls difficulty comes from players giving themselves self-imposed challenges and outright not wanting to grind a little and level up because they like the fighting system.
The hardest difficulty on just about about any other game would probably feel way more challenging if you don't have such qualms.

The difficulty in Dark Souls lies mostly in timing. Then there's the whole "be careful and aware of your surroundings" thing, which is often bullshit.

But a singleplayer can be hard because the enemies are BS
