Melee weapons are extremely useful when hordes start to swarm you, especially if you put your back to a wall or corner.

I remember that sewer part where there's like a gazillion zombies coming down the tunnel.

Melee is broken as fuck in L4D2, especially the katana.

Bladed melee weapons can cut a smokers tongue before it grabs you if your timing is just right.
Spitters and boomers will need a ranged weapon to take down efficiently
A lot of tanks have massive tunnel vision and will be completely oblivious to you hacking away at them while they chase down one of your team mates

Also, unless they've fixed it, the police baton does the same amount of damage to the tank as other weapons, but has double the amount of swings per second of other weapons. Shit was great.
