MegaTen games always stay good and fun, but never phenominal sans Soul Hackers.

It's consistancy in quality makes it one of the better JRPG franchises. It's my favorite along with Dragon Quest and Etrian.

the turn based combat, while polished, is very unoriginal and is rehashed again and again through all the games in the serie, as are the bestiary, the atmosphere, the dungeons maze-like designs, and a lot of other elements. Soundtracks are pretty bland and forgettable imo. Demon fusion is fun 5 minutes then gets tedious.

SMT literally has mechanics that devalue the fun of the combat (buff stacking in Nocturne, smirk RNG in 4)
You should broaden your horizons, there are some fun as fuck turn-based JRPGs.

Those games, especially the 2nd one, have the most fucking engaging gameplay of any JRPG ive ever played.

Grandia 2 combat becomes boring as hell when it turns into AoE spam half way through

You can avoid the field encounters completely without much repercussion. The boss fights are still fun, and they get even more fun when you don't grind.

The battle systems tend to be pretty boring but everything else is good

word of caution though: some of these games will seriously change your standards for what you think gameplay in an RPG should be, and you'll end up significantly more bored with shitty, lazy combat systems

Well I don't really have time for games that are mediocre so I don't mind if these "spoil" me

food rotting wasn't all that bad, since you didn't even need to heal in that game except for a few fights, and there was a lot of stuff that didn't expire.
Origins was literally an improvement in every way, tons of new mechanics, difficult as fuck, and somehow the most fast-paced combat I've ever played in what was supposed to be a fucking card JRPG.

The DeSu series are some of the best SRPGs on the DS and 3DS.

Daily reminder that it's too late for Atlus to ride the Pokemon GO fad and made a real-life DeSu game.

the battle network games have a somewhat similar battle system, also really fun

I like many of those games but Nocturne had much better battle systems than all of them. It's simple but interactive, balanced for the most part and challenging, even fast paced for a turn based game.

Battle systems like Shadow Hearts and VP have many special mechanics that make them novel and fun for the first few times but nowhere near as effective at its core.

ahh i never played them, i usually take GBA/DS era JRPG recommendations with a grain of salt since fans of games like Golden Sun/Infinite space seriously overrate them, but anyone who has played baten kaitos ill listen to
