What are some games with great sound design? (not music)
I want to put my headphones on and enjoy the sounds around me.

Bloodborne for sure. Playing it with headphones on is absolutely insane.
The Witness is the first thing that comes to mind.
yep. sometimes I load up my save just to walk through all the areas and listen
that it changes with the moon too is also very nice
alien isolation
Silent Hill 3
not the one you posted
only thing that sounds good is iDroid and the menu sounds in general
guns are limp shit even compared to GZ, helicopters are toys, grenades are toys, sandstorms are breezes of wind, sand doesnt create enough sound, weather effects like rain dont sound convincing let alone look so, fauna in africa doesnt make background noise etc
what an overhyped dogshit, saddest thing is it could have been the best game of all time. TPP is literally the anti deus ex- core gameplay mechanics are smooth and great but there is literally nothing to use them on except "le fulton/ kill x guy/ x thing"
not to mention that you become an overpowered monster way too easily which prompted them to put in retarded GMP/ resource deployment systems
Silent Hill 1-4.
Superb haunting atmosphere via creepy audio effects, and some truly jamming soundtracks:

Seconding this.
These!
You can grab them for PC from these links:
Far Cry 4 had nice sound design, but I only noticed it after turning off UI.
this. qb's sound design is just mental.
demons souls is better.
I actually enjoy Fallout4 a lot more with headphones on.
>thread about sound design
>manchild spergs out about the entire game
Can't you just fuck off to your MGSV hate general?
The game was shit, but you MGS drones have to be the most obnoxious cunts in this entire board.
Your game was shit, get fucking over it.
Red Dead Redemption, Silent Hill 2, Tomb Raider anniversary/underworld, maybe? It's been a while but I quite liked the atmosphere in that game
Every DICE game
but the ps4 has no headphone jack??????
Fucking this.
I haven't seen a bigger bunch of melodramatic autists than this.
>i-i-i feel le phantom pain from le cut content
An entire year repeating this every single day, fucking hell.
Battlefront
>thread about sound design
>mention "guns are limp shit even compared to GZ, helicopters are toys, grenades are toys, sandstorms are breezes of wind, sand doesnt create enough sound, weather effects like rain dont sound convincing let alone look so, fauna in africa doesnt make background noise etc "
>d-durr fucking sperg this is a sound design thread
are you retarded? learn to read you stupid fuck
>but you MGS drones
I hate the entire franchise, can you only speak in buzzwords?
Are you retarded? Its in the controller
on the topic of the thread, the EA battlefront shit had superb sound design, I recall basically all Remedy games having great sound design, is a hidden gem regarding this topic, its absolutely insane how much little audio clutter (good one) there is that youll miss when youre not using high quality headphones
>>i-i-i feel le phantom pain from le cut content
where did I mention "le cut content"? The entire game is garbage right up from the first real level
Go fucking kill yourself
I don't agree with your opinion on sounds, I like them and I think they have enough punch. Also I'm using this mod ( nexusmods.com
But, did you really need to sperg out about the rest of the game just because you saw a TPP image? This is not an MGS thread.
And half the other post is unrelated to sound design, fuck MGS baby, of fucking course MGSV was shit.
I quite liked AC: Unity honestly. I got on top of a castle and it sounded really chill, but I don't play with headphones much so it might have just been me
games with good footstep sounds
list them, faggots
Elite Dangerous has absolutely brilliant sound design.
Battlefield 1 War Tapes.
Nobody gives a shit, people are just tired of you manchildren drowning yourselves in a pool of your own tears every fucking day.
One fucking year of constant crying, do us a favor and off yourselves.
Silent Hill games, Resident Evil remake, fuck if I know what else
And got triggered enough to write multiple replies about it? How fucking stupid are you?
A longer, more in depth post doesnt hurt your adolescent mind, does it?
>of fucking course MGSV was shit.
it had literally every reason/ possibility to be the best stealth/ tps of all time based on what they showed and with the premise of the gameplay demos being just a low level tease of what is to come
too bad their basically scripted gameplay sequences with sped up travel segments are literally the height of the games potential exploited to the fullest with heavily preacquired/ pre-practiced tactics of the particular mission
>waah it hurts my feelings when someone says something bad about a game :(
your "le cut content" meme had nothing to do with any of the things I said. Moms gonna freak from your meme post
I remember AC 2 was great when climbing high buildings because the whole game would reduce the volume levels and you could hear everything in the streets with an echoy filter, it felt great.
Is Unity okay now? Apparently most bugs are fixed now and the performance is not as shit if you have a high end gpu. I don't wanna spend 30 eurobucks on it but it's like 3 bucks on G2A.
Are you being stupid ironically or what?
Its a Kojima game made by the same team that made MGS4 and PW, of course it was a horrible game with a horrible story.
Your game is shit and Kojima has been an awful developer for years, everyone but you drones knew that for years, get fucking over it and stop behaving like autistic manchildren, don't know what kind of "adult" proceeds to cry about a game an entire year and acting cringeworthily melodramatic about it.
>it could have been the best
My fucking sides.
...
Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2.
I can't say if they're objectively good, but I really love how the footsteps sound in those games. Probably just nostalgia speaking, though.
>BFBC2
>SOMA
>Alien: Isolation
>Thief 1-3
>Project Reality
>Silent Hill series
This is excluding modded games, except for PR since it's standalone.
The Silent Hill series up till SH4.
PT is pretty top tier
MH4U
Every Souls+Bloodborne
Mass Effect 2 and 3 have a lot of audio you miss if you aren't playing with earbuds/headphones, and unrelated to the rest of the game have really good sound design in my humble opinion
>INSIDE
youtu.be
Ambient noises and scenery along with the mellow music makes FFXIV amazing to chill in. I wish it had VR support and I could just relax in Lower Limsa or East Shroud.
>Your game is shit and Kojima has been an awful developer for years, everyone but you drones knew that for years
>I hate the entire franchise
>everyone but you drones
are you genuinely retarded/ eyes so watery because of tears you cant read anymore? Youre just making yourself look like a fucking idiot
> don't know what kind of "adult" proceeds to cry about a game an entire year
Dont know what kind of an "adult" assumes than an entire internet full of people including this anonymous board is one person just because they have been talking about the same thing, personally for about 3-4 posts so far
>My fucking sides.
yeah, because retarded children like you have no clue about what actually constitutes a good game. The gameplay trailers were showing off some of the most advanced freeflowing stealth/ tps gameplay out there with a completely new buddy system but obviously a mememaster like you knows its LE SHIT because muh I dont like it
It only proved to be shit after release since the pure mechanics and controls was all the game had
GTA V
I love just walking around and listen to the random ambient noises
>no mention of Dead Space
Oh come the fuck on
Dead Space is poorly designed garbage.
Dragon's Dogma has some very good and subtle detailed sound design, like the very minute sound of your sword vibrating when slicing through the air or the sound of you palming your daggers when you flip them in your hands.
Syndicate 2012 has some godly sounding guns
>thread about sound design
>"neat, a subject I know a lot about"
>only 2 games mentioned with actually good sound design
>everyone else is just listing their favorite games so they can pretend they don't play garbage
>third person games like bloodborne
>shit they played through tv speakers
Holy fucking shit, does anyone here even know what sound design is?
Subnautica
The Last of Us has lots of technology and fantastic sound design.
>sound waves actually travel through gaps and windows and doors instead of just being beamed straight through walls
>sound echoes when appropriate
>rain sounds different depending on the environment you're in
>gunshots are loud and very satisfying
>tense combat where you have to concentrate on hearing footsteps amidst ambient noise, birds chirping, and ragged breathing
>entire boss battle designed around using sound to track and lure
>enemies call out your specific location to each other when they spot you (e.g. Behind that burned-out building!)
>music is absolutely God-tier
If it were on PC you faggots would adore it.
>in my professional attention whoring audiophile *fedora tip* opinion...
No one cares faggot, take your (You) and fuck off.,
Souls and Bloodborne have great sound design, what the fuck is wrong with your head
Okay, then please mention games with good sound design in your opinion.
But,
>third person games like bloodborne
>shit they played through tv speakers
I don't have a ps4 but I'm pretty sure you can plug headphones into the controller. Also TVs have earphones plugs.
Credit where credit is due last of us has decent enough sound design.
>If it were on PC you faggots would adore it.
That's just wrong. Nobody plays anything on pc unless it has solid gameplay or story, and TLOU has neither of those, if it made it to steam 80% of the people who bought it wouldn't get 2 hours into it.
Definitely Witcher 3. You know, it's a good game, a bad game, blah blah I DON'T CARE to talk about that. I'm just talking about the sound. When you turn on your witcher senses, the world becomes quiet and you can hear all of those small things like branches breaking, the wind and lots of nice things. I love it.
Name some games with good sound design then you faggot.
At best directional accuracy, but everything else is terrible, all muddled random noises designed to spook you out, then you have the laziest bullshit music...
Yeah lets analyze sound design through $10 earbuds hooked up to a wireless controller.
Why, you're clearly pretty much deaf so what difference is it to you.
> Nobody plays anything on pc unless it has solid gameplay or story
I need to start saving some (You) reaction pics.
Rainbow Six: Siege
It's impossible to appreciate its sound design without wearing headphones.
Agreed, though I wish not every random pedestrian conversation wasn't "satyrical", I'd like to hear normal and serious conversations while driving or walking around.
My GPU died one hour after renovating my sub and I spent the whole fucking month waiting for another one to come so now I irrationally hate this game. I'll probably end up coming back though
Really? I need to replay the game and pay more attention to sound details.
Oh so you were just baiting, alright.
Fine, or is a skinner box.
But frankly TLOU isn't fitting that category either, considering the multiplayer is shit and it has no replay value.
>Literally nothing
BioShock
>Oh so you were just baiting, alright.
Right, because I'm the one that said bloodborne had good sound design.
Could catch a fucking whale with that kind of b8.
The Battlefield 1 beta sounds pretty damn good imo
Ultimate General: Getysburg
DEFCON
>thread about sound design
>"oh I know so much about this!"
>okay, then point out some games
>"why, you guys are deaf anyways"
>hey guys it's my first day on Sup Forums, I'm going to ask what games this guy likes and then shit on them because he shit on my shit taste in games, I'm sure nobody has ever tried this before, I am so smart
dragons dogma, if you have sourround compatible headphones, or you could use the razer surround drivers (yeah fuck razer but this driver actually works pretty good, is free and you don't need a razerproduct for it to work)
this also fixes the low sound bug btw
also battlefront, shit game but graphics and sound design are on point
also silent hill
buy a surround 7.1 compatible headphones, they aren't memes the really give a better immersion
resident evil 6
I have some shitty Sennheiser HD 439 that I've been meaning to change since forever, mind recommending some good 7.1 headphones?
>buy a surround 7.1 compatible headphones
Marketing bullshit user, there's only 1 actual pair of 7.1 headphones and it's razer's terrible piece of shit with 5 drivers in each ear.
You only have 2 ears, you only need 2 drivers.
>You only have 2 ears, you only need 2 drivers.
I'm not an audiophile so I have no idea if this is true or if it's supposed to be bait or something, someone elucidate a diphthong such as myself
Don't fall for the audiophile meme user
I have the exact same headphones and they are just fine outside of the fucking ear pads being near impossible to find.
Here's some old shit from Sup Forums, I assume it's still relevant because headphone technology hasn't really changed in the last 20 years.
Then mine must be broken or something, because for some reason mine, while the sound quality is okay, they sound extremely low and I have to crank up the volume in the speakers up to almost maximum just to hear anything.
Was dissapointed since I've had some other Sennheiser in the past and they were the best I've ever tried.
Mgsv didnt have great sounds in the main game but the tapes were fucking on point. The bell ringing one was sound porn.
Metro 2033 & Last Light, Battlefield Bad Company 2, BF3, Max Payne 3.
>7.1 compatible headphones
>aren't memes
>7.1 headphones
>good
you only have 2 ears. everything you can hear can be emulated by 2 speakers. type virtual barber shop into youtube.
surround headphones are complete bullshit.
Sounds like you have them hooked on to something that does not have enough power to drive them, which is how they get you with audiophile meme, you don't just buy a nice pair of headphones you have to also buy the several hundred dollar equipment to make them not sound like shit. Also i lied, turns out i have the HD-429 which i guess might be a "lesser" model and may be easier to drive, though i have returned lower version number and cheaper version of Sennheiser headphones that are a fucking nightmare to drive on top of sounding like trash.
You will need to check the impedance rating of your headphones and then do some heavy googling to see if you have it hooked on to something with enough power. You might need an amp, which are criminally expensive, i just have mine jerry rigged through some cheap headphones that amp sound, not perfect but fuck spending 200+ dollars for some fucking capacitors and a circuit board.
look guys if you don't believe that surround headphones don't work why, not try it out then with those razer driver, ou can even test the difference there
I mean if you really think it didn't make a difference you can just uinistall it again, but I can guarantee you it really makes one, I didn't believed it first either but it's pretty great
(also if it asks you for a mail to register just use a 10minmail)
I use pic related with the surround drivers, it's good enough for me
fuck I need to replace my keybouard
>i just have mine jerry rigged through some cheap headphones that amp sound
I meant speakers not headphones...
Deus ex mankind divided has some of the best sound design I've heard in a game in a long time. Memers will shit on it because it's new though.
Souls games/Bloodborne also have very good sound.
Idon't know man, I think the most iportant thing to look for is clarity over bass, since the 90s manufacturers have the tendency to optimize for deeper bass, are ''bass-boost'' but fuck up the mid and higher tones for it
fuck bass in general clarity>deep bass
my config btw is audio-technica earphones with, with configured ''peace equalizer apo'' to neutralize the bass for more clarity plus the razer surround drivers, gaming never sounded that good before
I can share my equalizer setting is someone cares
I have no idea what you're talking about. I just plug them into my logitech Z623 speakers, like I've always done with every other headphones without problems. They also sound really low if I plug them into my phone.
Sorry if I'm sounding like a retard here.
Forgot to add pic
Overwatch has some pretty excellent sound design.
I can really recommend the ath-m50 from this list they are great, and aren't build cheap
So you're saying that adding some razer drivers to some standard 2.0 headphones improves the sound quality? How does that even work?
Nice argument.
I tested out the razer surround program, and from my perception everything sounded like it was incredibly far away.
It felt like once you activate the program, you lose the ability to hear anything closer than a rooms distance away.
I'm no expert really, but they copied some patent from dolby surround (they have similar drivers but are really expensive like 300dollar for pretty much the same effect)
basically it emulates the a ''3d'' sound effect meaning you have a 360 degree sense where the sound comes from, by playing sound that are further away from the player lower but with a slight echo to trick you into thinking it has a sense of distance, but also emulates the feeling if the sound comes from behind, from or from the side
like I said give it a try, you can always deinstall if not satisfied
desu I only tested it on dragons drogma, wich made a huge difference, and on silent hill 3 and 4 but the effect there were not as good as in dd but still noticable better, also on morrowind wich didn't make any difference at all, maybe it is also dependent on the game and how that said game handles the sound
90s/early 2000s sega games
I tested it out playing Red Orchestras 2 so that might be why it was so different for me.
But hey if the settings worked for you, that's really all that's important.
thanks
oh here is my equalizer settings maybe it is some use to you (dependent on your headphones)
Look user, last time i had to buy headphones i had to do so much research on the internet over a seemingly meaningless purchase that it flared my depression to suicide levels, it was almost as bad as when i had to buy a fucking TV to play some video games on. So if you are expecting me to solve your problem then I'm sorry but you are talking to the wrong person, i wish i could but i have neither the drive nor the knowledge actually.
Suffice it to say that even though your speakers remain the same, not all headphones are made equal. Some require more power then others for you to get decent volume. On the specs they should list a value for Impedance which should let you know if they require more power then the average ones or not, the higher the Impedance the more power they need, or at least that's how it should be but like i said i have tested cheaper headphones with lower impedance and that should be easier to drive being listed for use with ipods and shit and yet i could barely get any volume from them without cranking it up, so there's obviously more things involved that are beyond me.
Also just because some speakers have a headphone vagoo to stick the jack in doesn't mean they have a headphone amp. In fact i am pretty sure most do not, because fuck you go buy more shit. These shitty headphones i have apparently have one and i happen to know that they stopped making them aged ago and the new versions don't come with the amp. I'm praying they last for many more years or I'm fucked.
Anyway, low volume output is usually a telltale sign of a weak input source and need for an amp. HD-439 actually have low impedance, buying more expensive headphones and hooking them up to the same source is almost guaranteed to be a waste of money and ending up being worse.
Thank you user, I actually learnt a couple of things thanks to you, and probably helped me not waste hundreds of € in some other headphones.
HOLY FUCKING SHIT
DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT!!!!!! BUY HD-202 HEADPHONES!
This is enough proof to me that whomever made this picture is either a shill or a complete retard. These are some of the worst headphones i have ever experienced, they were literally made for drum & bass retards with punctured ear drums, all you get is bass everything else is muddled and quite as a mouse and on top of that they are harder to drive them some more expensive headphones. Absolute fucking shit, returned this trash ASAP.
