So at this day and age, is it still better for each Mario sub-spinoff sport series to have their own individual game, or would you prefer this new compilation all-in-one approach they're going for now?
Considering one of the biggest reviewer issues with Ultra Smash was "literally just tennis; no content", I'm not surprised with the change in direction. As long as all sports are equally fleshed out with a decent amount of content, I think this is the way to go as opposed to saturating the market in even more Mario sports titles that will likely underperform.
There just isn't enough incentive these days to buy "tennis" or "golf" games that are literally just tennis and golf at full price, but a compilation of multiple sports *with online* on the other hand..
It honestly might seem like "too little too late" to some. Maybe some strikerfags bitter that the soccer isnt really strikers soccer.
And why horseback racing?
Liam Johnson
When Bill said that it was ""REAL"" soccer, I almost felt like that it was a jab at Strikers itself, like "oh no, that did soccer all wrong, here's the real version".
Or was there another Mario soccer game I overlooked?
Jack Morris
It won't be as fleshed out as singular quality sports games like tennis, toadstool tour or strikers. Especially if recent sports games are to go by.
Jordan Edwards
i want Mario strikers but i get Mario generic soccer
Strikers had the edginess to the familiar character design, wearing what one might consider mad max body armor.
all the other sports have been done better in other games too, so i really can't be hyped for a 5-1 pack
Aaron Perry
>There just isn't enough incentive these days to buy "tennis" or "golf" games that are literally just tennis and golf at full price
Yes there is. Nobody had an issue with Ultra Smash's core gameplay. It was that it had less content than the fucking Gameboy Mario Tennis while being sold as a full priced retail holiday release.
People will gladly buy a new Mario Sports title with some semblance of effort put into it. But Nintendo's strategy this gen seems to be pumping out a stream of low budget games to stay afloat while they cross their fingers that the NX will recreate the Wii Sports craze.
Zachary Martin
Eh, I think it was more of a jab at the newly released Mario and Sonic olympic game which had five a side football IIRC.
Hudson Clark
Mario Sports Super Star just like that would seem like an inferior version of Mario & Sonic, which has much more sports. They meant to say that each sport is more fleshed out. If they really are, I'm gonna love this game.
Jeremiah Sullivan
Seriously. What is it with Nintendo and looking back on their past acclaimed games as if they were mistakes?
And whats with young Nintendo fans going along with it? There's been so much hate on Paper Mario and TTYD following the backlash on Color Splash
Owen Sanders
new compilation. PUT IT ON WII U NOJ I will sign any petition that demands Ninte to create this series for the Wii U.
Jace Diaz
Mario Baseball is best Mario sport
Chase Martinez
They made an emphasis that all the games are full
The character roster is already bigger than Tennis Ultra Smash, so assuming the characters arent limited to specific games, this is already better than Tennis Ultra Smash
I also like how each character gets a designated horse, Baby Luigi riding a donkey is fucking hilarious
Owen Young
>3DS
And another lost sale.
How in the fuck am I going to revive those moments of Strikers and Mario Tennis back in the day if it's not on the Wii U? The NX better have that shit.
Joseph Nguyen
So apparently this is the roster
Characters with * were seen as assists and/or game specific, including the various colors, the only exception being regular Koopa
Mario Luigi Peach Daisy Yoshi Birdo Wario Waluigi Bowser Bowser Jr. Boo Rosalina Donkey Kong Diddy Kong Baby Mario Baby Luigi Boom Boom Pom Pom Koopa Paratroopa *Toads Red Toad Green Toad Purple Toad Blue Toad Penguin Blue Toad Yellow Toad Yellow Flying Squirrel Toad *Goomba *Shy Guys Yellow Shy Guy *Lakitu *Fire Bro *Blue Koopa Troopa *Magikoopas Green Magikoopa Yellow Magikoopa *Stone Spikes
Nathan White
You can probably thank Baseball for that huge as fuck roster.
Pic releated is Sup Forums's ideal Mario spin-off roster for any spin-off game
Oliver Allen
u mean soccer
their nintendo "3ds" direct.... >girlslaughing.jpg ....said they were making the soccer a real 11v11 match.
Andrew Perry
I hope Horse Racing is like Mario Kart. Can't wait to drift with my horse.
Isaac Howard
>bigger roster than Ultra Smash Make way for the Baby Koopalings!
Matthew Reed
Faggots would cream buckets for shitters like King Boo alone these days
Elijah Anderson
I'm sad it doesn't have american football or rugby and basketball.
Isaac Collins
>There just isn't enough incentive these days to buy Not for YOU there isn't.
But the horde of degenerate, braindead, subhuman faggot Nintendo fans will gobble this shit up until they croak.
Carter Wilson
I'mma laugh real good if the 3DS can actually pull off full sporting experiences for these different games, when the console games have been hit or miss as individual titles.
Functional online is just the cherry on top of it all. Nintendo misplaces effort all the time, which has me curious just how solid this will be, since they're probably realizing that like OP said, nobody wants to pay full price for a single sport title these days, unless it has Madden on the title. Even then, I don't think those are still going strong, are they?
No clue. There's people that actively shit on the older games for no reason, despite modern Nintendo not having Nintendium to protect their review scores and having generally agreed upon worse games as time goes on.
Still miffed at the kiddies screaming that Prime isn't canon since Sakamoto didn't work on them, that players who don't like Federation Force are entitled (just like SJW did with Ghostbusters), and after it flopped hard, proclaiming the franchise was never a big deal and overhyped, despite being cited endlessly as a source of inspiration and classic(yet again, just like Ghostbusters)
And all the people going off about if we want a real Mario RPG, to just go and play the Mario & Luigi series, when Paper Mario started out as Super Mario RPG 2 and was praised for its creative artstyle, writing, and gameplay mechanics.
Same deal about how Star Fox was treated just as poorly as Metroid and Paper Mario, in relation to how people were building up and defending Zero around the web. I'm all for people having opinions, but for people to turn around and start bashing older games that set the standards of expectations, which may or may not be met by future titles in a series, it just seems off. Lots of shitposting just to wallow in shit with other people parroting the same opinions these days off Sup Forums
Jayden Foster
My question right now is the quality of each individual sport. I really loved Strikers, and I'm not sure how well they'll pull off soccer in this thing. Tennis also bothers me since from what I could see, they still had those markers that told you which way to hit the ball.
Isaiah Anderson
It will probably suck since no individual sport will be fleshed out enough. They should just have made another strikers game. Yes, I'm bitter.
Liam Baker
How's wagglan Power Tennis? Seems like it would be fun.
Nolan Ward
How could they when Strikers' developers were busy with Federation Force? :^)
Christopher Rivera
Am I the only one who see the similarities besides the sports themselves?
Camden Taylor
The sports in Mario Sports Mix were minigames, while here they're making the claim that each sport will be fully fleshed out.
I also think Camelot is the developer for this, Squeenix made Sports Mix.
Elijah Gonzalez
I don't care about or like sports. Games like Super Mario Baseball and Strikers are good because they're fun. I feel like they've missed the point.
John Lewis
>implying he isn't a top tier character outside of main guys, adult humans, DK four, and Royal Koopas
Noah Rogers
The only reason Mario sports seem to be praised is for literally everything about them BUT the actual sports
>tennis/golf = the RPG mode >strikers = the "edgy" fun personalities of each character and their theme songs >baseball = the fuckhuge roster and adventure mode
Kevin Cox
But they don't. Never have they said that. They are saying they don't want to just remake them. Show me a time when anyone said "___ was bad/a mistake."
Jason Fisher
I actually liked Mario Tennis on the 64 the most. I played the GBA game and it was alright but I didn't like those super powered up shots.
Dominic Murphy
Boot baby DK and add in Rosa, and you have a deal.
Jace Phillips
needs koopalings
Jaxon Cook
>"too little too late" why? 90% of gamers only play for maybe 5 years of their life.
Charles Sullivan
>tennis/golf = the RPG mode
I see people mention this a lot. What makes Mario tennis and golf an RPG?
Xavier Wright
Did you play the GBC and GBA games?
Wyatt Bennett
>fun I think you missed the fact this site is 18+
Cooper Thompson
Nope, I actually forgot they existed. I looked up some videos, I see what you mean.
Anthony Wilson
misplacing effort? Offering a compilation like this on their strongest current product is anything but. the online is really important here
Ian Peterson
I just find it odd that from what they've shown, they're taking this really serious and offering a competent product, while in the same direct, we're getting Pikmin 2D, Mario Maker Mobile with no online uploading, and recent stuff like Zero and FF that could have benefited additional polish and features.
Still, they've managed to gain my attention for this, since the value and quality looks to be quite nice.
Aaron Garcia
Alright I hope that was a satisfying post for you
Ian Rogers
I think they had more polish than simple mini games. Hockey didn't really hold up 3 on 3, but the other sports were great, and had surprising depth to them. In fact the whole game felt like the ideal arcade sports game, with simple controls that don't detract from the games, a big cast (with the cool FF and DQ characters, too), super moves, and a load of unlockables. The Behemoth boss fight and King Behemoth secret boss were cool, too.
It even had an "unlock everything" input cheat code at the title screen!
Christopher Collins
I think Zero's only issue is that it is Lylat again and not new locations. The controls were much better than traditional, but there was a distinct lack of extra content.
As for the others, they are definitely lacking. FF is decent enough with friends, but the Artoon should not be allowed to make games any more. I feel loke this is all stuff the B-teams are working on while the A-teams are making bigger games for the NX. Teams like EAD and Retro, you know?
Henry Kelly
Jesus christ, DK's horse is thick as hell
Zachary Diaz
>mario has cartoony hero horse >DK has stronk thick horse >Peach has qt horse >Rosie has ara ara horse >Luigi gets bishounen fuckboi horse I must see Bowser's horse.
Dominic Parker
And Yoshi must get a horse too
Elijah Davis
Steedception...
Jason Sanchez
Would be hilarious if Yoshi had another Yoshi to ride on.
