They're quite different
>no open world
>no mission-based structure aside from Peace Walker
>linear for the most part
>CQC and other non-lethal options are limited until MGS3
>aiming paradigms that take some getting used to if you're used to FPS/TPS gameplay i.e. using Square button to fire weapons instead of R1
>narrative is more complex

red dead redemption

>placeholder

every MGS game is pretty different from one another, except for possibly 2 and 3, but 3 was just an apology anyways

Resonance of fate.

Resistance 1 (forget 2 and 3)
Uncharted series
Demon Souls
inFamous 2 (forget 1)
RDR
Journey
Vanquish
Stranglehold
Wrath of the White Witch
Dragon's Crown
MGS 4
Trails of Cold Steel

I can't really think of much else.

almost everything you said was entirely retarded, good job

>How different is Ground Zeroes/Phantom Pain from the rest of the series?
Quite a bit to be honest.
For starters, they started the open-world boom. The mission-based system is taken from Peace Walker though.

Obviously you won't appreciate even half of the references and implications if you have not played MGS1-4+PW before MGS5.

>but 3 was just an apology anyways

Pretty much what I got sorry OP.

It's sad that MGS3 was probably an attempt to reunite the franchise after nobody got the genius of MGS2.

Haze. Best Shooter ever! Halo killer!

there really wasn't any genius in MGS2.
Kojima wanted to get off the Metal Gear -train, and made as vague and open-ended game as possible, just so that the younger devs would have a fresh starting point with their ideas. The whole "world filling with garbage data" he took from TV documents and such that were already handling similar topics, as IM, chats and forums had been a huge thing in Japan for years at that point; it took western world several years to catch up.

Shame that in the end, people at Konami were little bitches who pretty much cried Kojima to come back to them, and make another MGS.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire (or Target in Sight, if you're in Europe).
