This was from a run I did with Sup Forums about a year ago. Some tips I can give you are upgrade your engines, shields won't do shit if your evasion is below 30%, flak cannons are gg, never risk your crew unless it's your last chance, and try to keep at least 40 scrap handy for stores.

You need subsystems for fun antics.
Mind Controlling the pilot of a ship kills it's evasion since there's no pilot at the helm anymore plus the internal crew end up in a wrestling match instead of fixing damaged components.
Boarding is always awesome, so board the triple fire missile room and kill it's manned guy and the system itself. If you really want to make boarding fun equip a medi-bomb if you run into one and keep healing your boarders.
I find killing all crew but the pilot the optimal way to fuck with the ship since 1 crewman can't pilot AND fix all the systems you keep attacking, but if all crew die the ship goes AI mode and it can recover damaged systems slowly with time on its own.
As was said drop a cloak, even at level1 cloak, and time it to dodge nasty attacks like triple missile or the super laser barrage attack at 3rd phase.
Hacking their medbay and watching them be killed slowly in a trapped room is a sickdark tactic.
Overall you need lots of laser power to bypass all that shielding to damage anything along side reducing the ships evasion to near 0. So don't just pour every last piece of scrap into upgrading just because you can, DO save 100 scrap or so as a savings for the chance you mind more Burst Lasers mark w/e's.

GNOME dev here. Can't say I agree with "beats all other GUI efforts in all of computing" - I still think webOS beats us in usability, and if it weren't for how far it fell, I wouldn't mind doing a mobile version of the DE :-D I'm glad people like GNOME, though - it may seem organized on the outside, but internally it plays out more like a fan project or something.
More to the point, however, I feel there's a bit of truth to this post. There's no real reason to use Linux other than "you like it" - sure, there are good aspects to it, but when it comes to OSes, there's no reason to use one over the other. We promote FOSS development because we believe in the philosophies behind it; however, imo it shouldn't be a dealbreaker when talking about software. I got to meet RMS a few years back, and while I appreciate his enthusiasm, I don't agree with him on this point.
HOWEVER, if there is a reason to use Linux, it's the headerbar concept. If you're not familiar with this, its a combined titlebar and menubar that GNOME uses on most of its core apps. It saves space for the actual content of the app to use and forces devs to focus on the core important pieces of their application when designing an interface. It's been copied in so many other OSes, but I feel only Linux users get the true, primal headerbar experience.
There's a user on DeviantArt I follow who does nothing but headerbar concept art, and I can say with certainty it truly shows the power of this amazing technology and its impact on society as a whole. We can do a lot with headerbars, and if we use them correctly, they can do a lot for us. too.
Why, my disabled wife wouldn't be able to use the computer to post her fanart if it wasn't for the simplified design of the GNOME Web browser, Epiphany. She's always found Chrome and Firefox's interfaces to be too unyieldy to use as a onehanded woman.

3 projectiles for 2 power. it doesn't get better than that. of course you need other shit, but the only thing better is a burst laser 2 which can miss shields just as easily.

Vulcans are a little too risky for my playstyle, they take fucking forever to get going and one lucky missile and your fully charged Vulcan goes from being a death machine to being a peashooter. It's much safer to use some kind of beam weapon along with other junk weapons used to bring down the shields. Of course everyone has their own play style and I can see why people like the vulcan, I just think there are better options.

Voltans are only good for the extra power they supply, if your system takes enough damage it doesn't matter if you have 4 Voltans in the room the vulcan will shut down. I've never had a run where I've gotten both a pre-igniter and a vulcan, but if the pre-igniter starts the vulcan off at full charge then there's no question it's a great option.
generally speaking if you're spending 6 energy on just getting their shields down you've already fucked up heavily

my last desperate move was putting 190 scrap into the weapon system to get the vulcan online, which I consider a bad move

Emps aren't the problem, it's the Hermes missile that one rebel ship fired at your weapons system and your 40 evasion wasn't enough to dodge it. That's the problem with using weapons that require a lot of energy/system power, if you take enough damage for that weapon to go offline you're suddenly helpless until you repair the system, AND wait for it to recharge which especially in the vulcan's case makes you a sitting duck for close to a minute. With 4 weapons that only take 2 power units you still have some ways to defend yourself while your crew is hopefully repairing the weapons system.
flak alone can't do shit without getting shit on by the enemy weapons, especially without something to support you like hacking

It's got strategy. It's just that RNG dictates your strategy, and it's far too easy to not have a viable one for the situation for one reason or another. Damage gating, lack of resources, lack of manpower, situational disadvantages, etc. The biggest problem with the boss is that it breaks even the regular game rules to be hard for hard's sake. See: Super Advanced AI means it's actually better to leave at least one person alive because otherwise it'll autorepair parts at ridiculous speeds, the boarding crew's damage dealing is pretty much level 3 when Level 2 is the best you can get, and shit you can't do regardless of how well equipped you get.
I hate FTL for that. Eventually it just hits a point where it stops pretending it gives a shit about fairness. The only question is if it happens at the end or earlier.
