red solo y/y?
Been years since I played the NES version, what name do I run with? 4 characters.

Play Gff or burst.
Cid
Yeah that's something I forgot to ask.
Any romhacks in particular I should be playing instead of the base game as is?
Bugfixes and what not if they're major, otherwise I'll just stick with this.
IIRC there are some neat spells that simply don't work in the original release of FF1.
I don't know which updates are good, and which ruin the game though.
I think it only was like 1 beneficial buff.
You play on GFF or you don't.

Grab this one, it's almost exclusively bugfixes with minor tweaks like boss music and minor QoL changes like being able to purchase items wither 1 or 10 at a time.
final fantasy restored
has all the bugfixes
Most of the non-bugfix "enhancements" sound fucking retarded. If I want to play an "enhanced" version I'll play the Wonderswan or Origins version. If I am playing the Famicom version then I will play it the way it was released, even if it is buggy, or at worst apply bugfix patches. Not OP though.
looks easy
It's a toss up between GFF, restored or raw.
1-3 GDD
4-6 restored
7-0 raw
Sup Forums knows best
There are two extra dungeons with one having 4 x warmechs random battles.
Well then it's a new game.
Now there's a grand total of 6 (six) characters to form a name for the hero.
and that just sounds like bullshit, i'm fine with just the bugfixes i think
I read somewhere the Famicom version isn't as bugged as the NES one, is there anywhere the differences in bugs between versions is documented?
Ralphy

What did he mean by this?
Play NES unmodified or go home
>Play NES unmodified or go home
This. Don't be a queerfuck, OP.
the game has a ton of bugs, but there are three major ones which you are likely to encounter:
1. weapons use their item index instead of their intended critical rate. this means later weapons get tons of crits and early weapons get basically none. opinions vary as to whether or not this is a problem.
2. when using a HOUSE to restore HP/MP and save, the game restores MP after saving, so if you load that save your restored MP is gone.
3. most spells besides direct damage or restoring HP don't work or are not useful. honorable mention to the PURE spell, which costs 4000 gil to learn: for that much money, you can buy enough antidotes to last you the whole game.
the other one you might notice is that weapons which are supposed to deal extra damage to certain enemy classes don't. the feature just doesn't work. this more or less doesn't matter, because even if it worked it wouldn't really be better to use the special weapons.
Extra end game dungeons are retarded.
RNG is fucking me over
Considering resetting from scratch until I get a random encounter that doesn't fuck me in the ass, 'lil Bomber here is the only one not called Ralphy who's still alive
Disregard that we made it
barely alive
without any cash to heal
goddamn, those goblins have it out for you
I thought this was a solo playthrough. Sounds like you need to go back out to the field and make Lil' Bomber push up daisies also.
I don't even know how someone can be this shit this early in the game. Kill yourself
Jesus, dude, have you played an 8bit RPG before?
If not this is not the one to start with.
Sold the chain mail that I shouldn't have bought in the first place because it does fucking jackshit to prevent my ass from being violently ravaged by goblins and wolves
you're messing something up
are you sure you equipped it?
Yo Sup Forums!
Should I buy the (digital) PS1 remakes of FF1 and FF2?
If imps are raping your anus this badly, you're just due to get knocked down before you can even clear Garland.
Just give up while you are ahead.
don't give squenix your shekels. they didn't make ff1 or 2, you have no moral obligation to pay them
just dl whatever version you want to play
I wasn't apparently.
Good lord how could I forget something so basic.
I learn from my mistakes
Kill yourself, no one gives a shit about your awful play through of Final Fantasy
Are the PS1 versions worth playing?
Rebought that Chain Mail
Now no one's ever gonna knock me down again, I'm set for game.
...
yep, almost 1:1 remake of the nes version with better graphics and difficulty intact
im a purist so i still prefer nes, but it's good if you want something newer
Now let's hope I make it back alive like this
good luck, you'll need it.
getting goblin raped out of the gates isn't a good sign, it's worth sticking with it though
I think I played through a good portion of the DS remake.
I know I never really played the older version though.
Basically the NES just with some quality of life improvements like buying multiple potions and bug fixes. It's honestly the only way to really play a nonhacked version of FF.
oh no
I'll have to pick it up then.
Thnx bruh
There's really only 2 versions to play of FF1 personally. The NES and PSX versions. GBA onward pretty much took out any teeth FF1 ever had. By taking away spell charges and upping your stats to a degree that you can sleep mashing Attack. I honestly like the whole "attackers miss when the enemy dies before your other allies attack the spot" for older style games too so there's that.
>not going full retard with Fighter, Monk, Thief, Red Mage
whew, you might want to go with or 2 fighter 2 red mage
you're having too much trouble for this early in the game
Is protect any good in the original game? I skipped it because my dumb ass thought Sleep was more vital and I can't shake off the feeling that I made a horrible mistake
It's a solo run
If this is the hack they most likely made the spells actually work. FF1 is notorious for being massive buggy in their spells. Where they either flat out did nothing or worse the opposite of what it was meant to do.
Well then this better work.
Managing those spell charges is honestly the hardest part for the time being, now that I got past the early RNG and forgetting to equip my stuff
Should have gotten FOG and RUSE in your lvl1 slots. I dunno how your version translated them.
If you go by the original NES without bugfixes, here are the spells to make note of due to glitches:
These bugs only apply to the NES version and are fixed in later versions:
Tmpr - Does not work at all.
Sabr - Does not work at all.
Xfer - Does not work unless the target is the party.
Lock - Always misses.
Lok2 - Instead of decreasing Enemy Evade% by 20, increases Evade by 20.
Hel2 - Works outside of battle as designed, works like Hel3 in battle.
Marsh cave is really the only truly hard part in the whole game. Once you are pass that shitty part the game feels much better. Seriously fuck that place
He seem to be playing a hack version that did bug fixes based on the PSX version. So I'm guessing all the spells do what they should do.
More specifically, FOG, RUSE, CURE. Low level black magic is shit use of your level I slots in a red mage solo run.
He's playing with bug fixes.
>Marsh cave is really the only truly hard part in the whole game. Once you are pass that shitty part the game feels much better. Seriously fuck that place
I know it's gonna be hell, so I gotta grind to buy some spells to be ready for it, but the RNG keeps fucking me over by handing out encounters with no less than 5 enemies and Ralphy being blind as shit good lord
Solo Red Mage is one of the hardest solo run if I remember right.
>Fighter
Annoying to start but once you gain a few levels you never really need to buy anything outside of potions since the game hands you Fighter gear all the time
>Monk
Same as the Fighter but needs a bit more grinding but you never need to buy anything for him outside of armor
>Black Mage
Super annoying but gets the most Spell Charges to pretty much destroy everything in your path
>White Mage
Heal, nice melee damage weirdly enough (yeah I know it's based on D&D which the Cleric does nice damage) and undead spells attacks which helps out.
>Red Mage
Can wear nice bit of armor at the start but soon you will find this selection limiting and stats kind of suck all around. And their spell selection completely stops I think after 6 while the other Mages go up to 9.
I did a solo red mage run on the PSP version. The FFV dungeon was the toughest because of solo Omega And Shinryu
Fucking finally I'm seeing some real numbers
Shinryu sounds like a dick in solo runs if only because I see back to back Flares almost all the time.
Should be 7 compared to the other 2's 8.
I may have made the early game harder for me because of poor choices regarding spell, but I think I can handle it once I'm done with the marsh cave's miniboss
Oh thanks. Been a while since I've played it. Do their spell charges get high enough to use them enough times? I hardly ever touch Red Mages in my FF1 run.
I really enjoy FF1 and was considering playing the new ones just to enjoy the bonus content.
I said fuck that as soon as I saw the mana change. They just made the game easier pretty much across the board killing any sense of identity it had in the process.
They could have just fixed the int bug, maybe made master not be an objective downgrade from its base class and called it a day.
Spell charges looking healthy here.
Problem is money.
Lack of multitarget spell really shows when so many enemies dogpile on me, and randoms are not worth wasting Invis/Cures on
yep, thats why we have romhacks
I think I'm fine with the ps1 version honestly. I can live with master being a shit upgrade because their damage is still fucking godlike with 0 equipment.
I just don't know why they never include a hard mode in later editions to FF1.
At least all later version of FF2 are better and I actually like that game.
If I ever wanted to play FF2 I would play a saga game instead. I can't think of anything it does that the saga series doesn't do better. I like FF1 for being a nice DnD style experience. It feels like a real adventure.
I agree with you about SaGa fixing everything wrong with FF2. But for some strange reason I just really love FF2.
I like SaGa but the whole "gain stats by random chance after each battle" still hurts it a little for me (I've only played 1 and most of 2 though, maybe they tweaked it to be better). I've been stuck on Apollo for months in 2 because he OHKOs half my party and the game won't give me any health boosts when I try to grind.
The Last Remnant is fantastic imo and it uses a similar system. SaGa games basically require at least skimming a mechanics walkthrough imo. In SaGa 1 you can get an end game ready party in a few hours or like 20 hours depending on whether you know what you're doing.
I honestly don't know where to start with that series after playing Unlimited. I tried Frontier 2 but I got a lot of slowdown and didn't find it as fun.
This is fine
>tfw always like going 8 bit theater party for playthroughs
Just something about it makes me smile. Even if Thief starts as a useless shit.
Over time Kawazu seem to slowly understand how the system he wants should be put in place. FF2 was him throwing everything at a wall and the GameBoy versions are slowly refining them. SNES and PSX are really the best to play.
>Unlimited
I'm so sorry for you. Honestly the best SaGa to play is any of the fan translation of the SNES or the PSX versions.
SaGa frontier is fun, Romancing Saga the minstrels song is fun as hell, The Last Remnant is a very unique experience and also really solid.
Note that like I mentioned the mechanics can be a bit obtuse and the game doesn't really hold your hand. You pick a character, you're dropped into a world and given a vague objective and told to give 'er shit.
You just sort of wander around doing sidequests and getting new abilities.
If you prefer a more structured experience it's probably not for you.
I could never do a solo character run because of the prevalence of paralyze and other bullshit on physical attacks against large groups. Every fight would be a diceroll in some areas.
WOW I WAS PRESSING BUTTONS BUT NOTHING HAPPENED
This time I'll pack more Antidotes instead of just relying on Tarantulas never poisoning me, RNG is really trying to get me
I actually liked Unlimited. It was weird at times, magic was obnoxious to learn and it failed to explain a lot of things, but it became more and more enjoyable as I got the hang of things.
>This time I'll pack more Antidotes instead of just relying on Tarantulas never poisoning me, RNG is really trying to get me
As I said the Marsh Cave is the worse place in the whole game. Maybe the dungeon with the cockatrice is equally as annoy because of Stone but by that point you have the gear and items to make it threw. Marsh Cave is still early on so you have nothing.
>level 2 spells hit everything
Oh thank fuck
I grinded to buy at least one LV3 spell in hopes at least one hit everything.
Now I can handle those fucking awful hordes, but I only get 3 shots
Ackackack, nice reference.
So, do i just dump the .nes file into the patch folder? FF Restored doesn't have an .exe or anything.
The one thing that really sucks about the romhack if I remember right is they changed where the Silver Sword is. Before you can buy it in the town near those giants. But the romhack "fixed" it because it seem to be a error to put it there. Because of how overpowered it is. Also I think they fixed the Power Peninsula so you can't grind there.
>Also I think they fixed the Power Peninsula so you can't grind there.
Just checked, seems that way
There's a program called Luna if I remember right. If you can think of a way for me to drop it somewhere I can give you my already hacked version.
BALS TO THE WALL user. It is the only way
Replaying FF1 with the patch honestly blew my mind. Until that point I just noticed small fixes and nice additions like buying multiple potions and not having to buy them one at a time. But once you get to that part the whole game feels completely redone. Think there's a few other "big" changes later on. Been enjoying it so far?
I'm ready. Definitely ready.
LunarIPS
Thanks but i found it. Do i need to patch everything in the settings folder too?
You just pick the rom and the hack and it combines them into the romhack.
Nevermind, I'm a dipshit who doesn't read. Thanks for your help guys
>I'm ready. Definitely ready.
I'm not ready.
Any Stun is basically a game over.
Just this one battle and then praying like motherfucker so that I make it out alive
Personally I just say run. Marsh Cave is awful and should just be over fast.
any modern game like FF1 where your party members are all blank slates decided in the start of the game?
That fight is mandatory.
This is all I have, no more items, no more spells, these hundred something HP have to last until I get back to the elf town
Most of those games are just dungeon crawlers like Etrian Odyssey.
Good luck with that.
Holy FUCK
I need some sleep now.
Literally one step out of the cave I ran into 4 Ghasts and almost had a heart attack
>SNES and PSX are really the best to play.
I figured. I'd probably skip to that but my autism dictates I play a series in order.
