Gaming Laptop Thread

Any other busy Sup Forums browsers use a laptop exclusively?

Post laptop specs and overall happiness with it.

MSI GL62
Quad core i5, 960m, 8gb ram

performance with perspective:6/10

personal perfomance with price: 8/10

This laptop has done me well. I play MGSV on high 50 fps at the lowest after removing all bloatware and confuguring it to do nothing but gaming, and im so fucking happy with it. Not my pic

Low spec laptop gaming perspective super appreciated. I almost settled for a 940 mx. Almost regret not saving $200 and getting one with an i7

how do I get the best out of a laptop for gaming

What type of gaming do you do?

MSI GT80S here. It's great for traveling and LAN parties, but I hardly do either anymore, so it's sort of a moot point to own it.

I use a laptop exclusively.

It's an Acer VN7-591g
CPU: i7 2.6GHz Quad core
GPU: 960m
RAM: 8gb
HDD: 1tb shit drive

The only thing I hate about my laptop is that its battery has gone down the shitter on 15% wear after a year of usage. Now I can only use it for 3-4 hours on power saver in uni before dying on me. Power brick's too heavy to bring everyday so I use it sparingly to read reference books and browse the net.

The most demanding I have ever played is Witcher 3. I'm perfectly fine playing at 30fps with great graphics.

Lenovo y-50p
8gb ram
i5
GTX 860m

Only game I really had trouble with was watch dogs. Can't run some of the graphics intensive mods I want on New Vegas at an acceptable FPS either.

MSi GP62

i7 6700HQ, 960m ,8gb

most games can run at 60fps with lowered settings and no AA. Best laptop keyboard I've ever used.

easy buy a desktop

Nice i almost got that same laptop because i do some editing rendering. But i dont mind the wait. Just gotta deal with heat after overclocking

From what ive seen, the perfomance between the 860 and the 960 is really not that drastic. I was kind of disappointed in Nvidia for that. Then they bring out the tens and pretty tell everyone the 9's are worthless.

Good sound quality? I got some Harmon Kardon speakers i use. Inconvienient but better than my stock speakers that sound like $25 gas station headphones

Oh yeah, specs.

i7 6820HK @ 2.7ghz
980m SLI
24GB RAM
2x m.2 SSD in RAID0 and a 1TB hdd.

I hate that I need to void the warranty on this piece of shit to add more hard drive space. Saw in a notebook forum that they have a trade-in offer for GT72 and GT80 owners since they fucked with the MXM slots to upgrade the video cards though, so hopefully I can end up doing that.

>i7
>2.6 GHz
What the fuck am i reading?

MSI GT72 6QE Dominator Pro G master race reporting in.

Where can I buy one?

It's a "mobile" processor, so it's underclocked to prevent heat issues on a laptop.

Runs games pretty good. Still I need to upgrade and good thing my laptop is really easy to work on. Open the bottom and everything is right there and no bullshit to deal with. Might upgrade the RAM from 6GB to maybe 12 or 16.

>52c/125f

I always thought it was weird how much better processors than mine had a barely superior speed. Now i understand why.
Is it a bad idea to overclock a laptop's CPU?
My laptop does what i want it to do (emulate Wii and down) but a little more power wouldn't hurt.

It can boost up to 3.5GHz, but then it would get too hot.

Just watch your temps and be smart about it, do your research on your cpu to see what it can handle.

Yep. A $20 cooler can help get the most out of a laptop processor without a house fire.

I don't know what kind of laptop can stand gaming, every laptop I try it in dies. I even stopped emulating because of all the progress I'd lose every day between BSoD and other failures. I can't just get a normal computer because I travel a lot

>tfw laptops now have dual 1080 desktop gpu's with a desktop processor too

fuck i'm so hyped. I'd love to ditch a desktop and move to something more portable.

...

What models have you tried? It goes without saying not all of them are built for gayming.

Thinkpad x220
Sometimes I play some emulators or Alpha Centauri

APUs surprisingly works for laptops. I used to had a laptop with amd A8 and it's pretty much serviceable.

The temps, I presume, is a bug?

>The temps, I presume, is a bug?
Seems like it, I mean I tried other software and it gave similar readings but my laptop would have fried by now.

I'll be honest with you user, I'm a poordag so I've tried it in most normal laptops I've gotten from family. But I earned some cash now and want to buy something that will not only videogames, but that won't die every 5 minutes or lag with fucking indie games

Try not to under buy or over pay. Not worth spending hard earned cash on a shitter or getting gypped by a name and logo. Again, common sense, but do your research. Best of luck.

I recently bought an asus laptop at a really really cheap price, it has a 6200u I5, 940m and 1TB HDD+128ssd

Thanks user, my last laptop cant even use wi-fi unless you keep restarting for it anymore

that's too spicy!

Alienware M15x here.

Current specs:
I7 740qm
8gb ram
(poo harddrive cause I got this for free)
AMD HD 5730 1GB

It runs decently well, WoW vanilla maxed 60fps, overwatch at the lowest settings 60fps.

It's also incredibly easy to upgrade and you can usually find these laptops for dirt cheap.
The cooling for these is pretty good, especially if you invest in higher quality thermal paste you can drop temps a bit.

HWinfo64 works very well for manually setting fan temp speeds, they don't get that loud either way.

For upgrades you can go as high as a i7 940qm (Overclockable to 3ghz), a GTX 970m (or R9 M290, may be a little hotter), 16gb ram, as well as a second hard drive (purchase hard drive caddy to replace dvd drive)

Currently I idle around 48*c (cpu, will probably repaste soon) with the gpu idling around 33*c

Picture quality is very good with good color.
Keyboard feels solid and the touch pad on this is one of the best I've used in any laptop.

To add on to this, replacement parts are cheap and easy to find as well. It's a great poorfag laptop for gaming, theirs tons of GPU's for it to upgrade to, it also has an expresscard 54 slot, which can be used for various other upgrades or an eGPU.

Gigabyte p34g v2

i7 4700hq 2.5ghz
nvidia 860m
8 gigs of ramalam
128 gb ssd + 1 tb hdd

It's bretty gud but can overheat real quick if u don't disable turbo boost. Also it was pretty cheap coming in at 1000 compared to other laptops at the same spec.

If you even consider those thick slabs to be portable

It's a Lenovo X140e. I like it a lot, it's just not really meant for gaming.

All I play on it lately is Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst. I wish it could run STALKER better.

While thicc as fuck. They can still be thrown into a backpack and taken with you in a car or on a plane easily. They are still mobile.

>gaming laptop

jesus fuck kill yourself anyone who owns this dumb redditor shit

y mad?

would these specs be good at emulating Windwaker and melee?

1920x1080
Intel Core i7-6500U 3.1 GHz
8 GB DDR3L SDRAM
Intel 520 integrated GPU

i know having an integrated card will be tough but i seen vids on yo tube where people are supposedly running wind waker at full speed on intel 4400s and wanted to know if something like this was adequate.

Clevo P150em

bought in 2012 with a amd 7970m that died on me end of last year.

Haven't had any issues playing games the speccy detects the card wrong it is a 6gb gtx970m

the only issue is i need to replace the bottom plastic case, wear and tear(lost all of my rubber feet) i have dropped this quite a few times still going strong.

I mainly use a shitty Toshiba for PC gaming. The newest game I have played on it is dishonored, and I was surprised how well it played. I'm going to build a nice PC now that life is more steady, but it's been fun being limited to old games to be honest.

>gaming
>laptop

Pick one.

Nvidia 770m (I think)
I7 4700
1.5 TB HDD
0.5 TB SSD
32 GB RAM
CD/DVD/BluRay RW

Acer E 15
i5 6200U 2.3GHz
Nvidia 940MX
8GB DDR4
1TB HDD

I've tried out a few games I've had on my steam account for a long time (Red Faction Armageddon, Massive Chalice, Sir You Are Being Hunted, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2)
They've all ran smoothly and looked pretty decent.

I have the same laptop and have played most recent games in high or max at 1080p and 45-60 fps, except dark souls 3 and bamham refund.
However, the hinge in these laptops is absolute shit, and its almost waranted to break after a year of use. Thanks for the low qualitu build, Lenovo.

Dell XPS 15 9550
960M
i7 6700HQ
8 GB DDR4
256 GB PCIe SSD

Got it because my old laptop just wasn't cutting it anymore for Adobe After Effects along with garbage battery life. Gaming is just a nice bonus that goes along with a 960M. If I do game seriously later on, it has TB3 for the Razer Core or hopefully some more TB3 eGPUs come out. Also has the Dell Power Companion, basically a power pack for the laptop.

Freaking expensive tho, it better last or I'm never buying another Dell again.

Fuck gaming laptops

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1505M v5 Processor (8MB Cache, up to 3.70GHz)
GPU: NVIDIA Quadro M2000M 4GB (basically a GTX 960M)
RAM: 16GB 2133Hz ECC
Drives: 256GB SSD + 1TB HDD

Oh and I forgot to mention, this thing stays pretty cool, I'm only sitting at 38C right now

This

Why buy bulky MLG PRO-looking ass looking gaming bullshit when you can buy a sleek business/workstation laptop that

>isn't as bulky
>runs a lot cooler
>lasts way longer on battery
>doesn't look like it was made for fucking teenagers
>ports out the ass
>easy as fuck to take apart

>modern thinkpads

The P50 is actually pretty damn close to the old ones. All it's missing is a 7 row keyboard. Has the old hinges and everything.

The chiclet keyboard is way better to type on, I must say, now that I actually have one

I put an X220 keyboard into my X230 keyboard to get the 7th row back, but I find myself hitting the wrong keys way more often

If they just added a 7th row to their new design it would be god tier. The keys are already curved in a lot which makes them way different from typical chiclets, and even way better than the keyboards on non-Thinkpad Lelnovos

Yeah, the hinge is my aching problem too. It's a real shame.

>hinge in these laptops is absolute shit
This, my hing was way too fucking tight, it kept making cracking sounds. Eventually it started to fray the monitor cable and it had to be replaced.
Also the hinge ended up getting ripped off of the monitor plate. Had to superglue it back on and loosen the hinge.

Thanks Lenovo

I fell for the gaymen laptop and bought a MSI GT683DXR with a GTX570M five years ago. The GPU burned down after a yer and I had to replace it with a GTX675M, since I couldn't find a cheap GTX570M anymore.

Never again am I going to buy a laptop, even if it means lugging a desktop around as a student.

The Lenovo Y40 is pretty good senpai

>511C

But why?

You realize you only hate laptops because you bought a gaming laptop, right?

Buy a used Thinkpad T420 for like $150, that thing will last you forever

I'm probably going to buy some shitty used laptop for dirt cheap and a proper desktop when my GT683 dies for good.

Laptops are not for gaming. If you want to play vidya and need mobility, buy yourself a decent desktop and a shitty netbook/cheap used laptop for work/student needs. This is what my failures have taught me.

Nowadays, gaming laptops are actually becoming rather respectable, especially with full fledged GPUs being used in them.

I've though about switching myself, just because of the portability and the difference in it's footprint.

Well, a T420 is a used laptop, but it's by no means shitty

That's the magic of used business laptops, they're cheap and in good condition because they're business surplus, offloaded when they jumped to the newer model

Check your local craigslist right now senpai, you'd be surprised what Thinkpads or Dell Latitudes/Precisions show up, and with fairly recent shit like 2nd gen Intel i5s

I've got a Lenovo Y50-70.
i7-4720HQ
8GB Ram
1TB HDD
960m

It's not the most powerful gaymen laptop out there, but I've got a custom built desktop for that, and it's nice having something that can play games, is easy to carry around, and doesn't look like one of those retarded Alienware shitshows.

Also I got it for about $400 less than its retail price at my work.

sell it and buy a desktop

>Nowadays, gaming laptops are actually becoming rather respectable
Are you sure?

Find me a laptop that looks more like or not jagged overdesigned gamey neon bullshit

Aside from the obvious cost per performance ratio, I think the absolute worst crime for gaming laptops is that they are either fucking hideous or scream "gaymur".

Aren't gaming laptops like super impractical because its hard to replace the parts when they go obsolete?

I play games on laptop. Its not one of those faggy gaming laptops with all the LEDs so it doesn't do modern things well, but it actually ran MGSV at a playable frame rate on the lowest settings @ 720p

That's why you gotta get a mobile workstation with a GPU instead of a gaymen laptop

>durable as fuck
>not gaudy
>easy to work on

>not listing the mouse-clit
What the fuck that shit is their best feature, I can't use a touchpad now because they're awful in comparison

they don't make the model with matte rubber anymore (it's all red and black glowing plastic now), which is pretty crappy, but with all the stickers off it's pretty nice and toned down looking

still holds up nicely after about 4 years as well

WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT

>buying anything Dell

No.

So you're telling me it hasn't actually been respectable since 4 years ago?

>judging dell because you used consumershit

ALL consumer laptops are breaky trash garbage. It's a totally separate world from business laptops. It might as well be separate companies.

And you can usually get them for a lot cheaper than "gaming " laptops.

>gaming on quadros
k

mashable.com/2016/08/31/acer-predator-21-x-curved-display-gaming-laptop/#mwewVwNcluqq

I think they changed the design for that series around 2 or 3 years or so ago, but yeah, pretty much like the Thinkpads and Lenovo's bullshit

everything about this is cringe, from the writing of the article to the laptop itself

Can confirm. I bought a second hand Latitude D830 for £70 and it has served me well for 3 years now. Very sturdy built with thick plastic.

Dell make some great monitors also

This

It's the biggest secret of laptops that nobody knows

You don't

It even has a keyboard nipple

Gaymung laptops are literally more useless than consoles

NIGGA WHAT THE FUCK?!

Should be fine for melee, dunno about windwaker

How heavy is that fucker??

thanks for the reply man from what im seeing a 4400 can handle windwaker so im hoping this can handle it with ease

Have you ever done a 3dmark test on it?

I use it for emulation and MMO's, works just fine.

somewhere between and apple and Rachel Jeantel

can you run dolphin well on that machine im looking to get a new laptop and want to see what specs i will need to run dolphin decently

I've had no problems so far, I was actually replaying Metroid Prime yesterday.

Captain?

How exactly is this possible?

Have MSI GX70
Don't fucking do it. Gaming laptops are a meme and a bad one. I have theoretically great video card in my laptop but because of another card that basically runs the system and display I can't do dx12 and install new drivers + there is a myriad other problems that you will encounter just because retards assembled this thing.
