Awaken my child, and embrace the glory that is your birthright. Know that I am the Overmind; the eternal will of the Swarm, and that you have been created to serve me.

Daily reminder that Metzen killed the Starcraft franchise with no survivors

Daily reminder that Metzen drew some pretty cool WC guys

...

The single purpose hivemind is somehow less retarded than the Protoss.

TFW I was an actual person in the game universe, not just a proxy for space dandy, terran-zerg-terran-zerg-Xel'Naga lady, and angry not-Fenix dude.

It was very immersive

Being a cerebrate was the coolest. They still have it that the player character hatched Kerrigan right? I can't let them take that from me.

I don't remember exactly what they did in SC2, but I remember them being mentioned.

It was awesome in BW where she straight up told you that the only reason she was keeping you alive was because you protected her.

Oh yeah, I forgot Fenix came back (kinda).

Man he was based.

Did Abathur design/rebuild Kerrigan and then put her in the chrysalis?

Then you as a cerebrate, protected her until she hatched?

What?

Essentially, SC2 recognizes it as:

Unnamed Cerebrate hatched Kerrigan
Unnamed Magistrate defected to Sons of Korrhal and aided Raynor.
Artanis helped Tassadar.

Then for Brood War
Unnamed UED Leader
Unnamed Dark Templar
Unnamed Cerebrate

The idea being they're player chars.

starcraft and brood war were so good

man i miss the glory days of b.net on that game

tfw they replaced based immortal brain-slugs with whiny bitch-queens, welcome to feminism 2016.

I haven't played SC2 but is it true they really went the "dindu nuffin" route with the Zerg/Overmind?

they fucked everything at least once

Metzen is a good artist, terrible storyteller.

And the Diablo franchise
and the Warcraft franchise (admittedly it's a bit harder to get a good story in an MMO, but it's still dogshit storytelling)

The cerebrate from sc1 was not the same as the cerebrate from the expansion. You died on Char. The cerebrate from the expansion is another unnamed one Kerrigan randomly managed to grab.

>Unnamed Dark Templar

I was under the impression it was Selendis.

>tfw you just wanna play knights or a day at school but you know those days are gone and never coming back

surprisingly, metzen wanted jim raynor to be a drunken mess in SC2. The stills where you see him making an ass of himself was all metzen's idea.
The newer members of the team wanted the perfect white knight in shining armor.

How do ya like my groove, Daggoth?

Why hasn't anybody posted this yet?

Abathur was inside the Chrysalis with Kerrigan, doing his dr. mengele thing.

Why are you doing this, Kerrigan? Look, I know about your past, I mean I've heard the rumours. I know you were part of those experiments with the Zerg, that Mengsk came and saved you. But you don't owe him this. Hell... I've saved your butt plenty of times.

DE-light-ed TO, SIR!

You're right, it has been too long.

Metzen should be shot for what he did to Raynor.

We go from awesome revenge speech from a space cowboy who wants to hunt and kill his former lover, all the way to whiny space bitch.

SC1 had so many great moments like this and I cant remember a single one from sc2 despite playing them all through less than a month ago.

>Hundreds of millions of zerg governed by millions of overlords and tens of thousands of queens
>Who in turn are controlled by a giant brain slug that plants roots in the ground and also has Abathur's skills

>Kerrigan creates something a thousand times smaller that can also move, hatch eggs, attack and defend itself but can't tinker directly with genetics

>Abathur objects to making broodmothers smarter since the added grey matter would make them too independent go rogue
>Broodmothers don't even have farsightedness, they lack "vision" and "cunningness", they just set a point and unleash skitters upon it.
>Cerebrates are master strategists, highly cautious and suspect treachery or sense when they're being outplayed (Zasz warning Kerrigan about Tassedar)
>This change in zerg battlefield depth behaviour is never mentioned

Was it ever explained? Like how the brood mothers can control just as many zerg despite all the added features and being so small? The Overmind had hundreds of Xel'naga minds incorporated into it and it created the Cerebrates over countless millennia.

They should have made him a fallen knight instead of a heartbroken limp dick.

>building a comfy little flesh base and spreading the creep across a poor little backwater shithole.

Early zerg missions were super good.

The worst thing about SC2 was that in SC1 both Protoss and Zerg sounded genuinely scary and Terrans sounded like they have some fucking balls.

In SC2 they all sound basically the same just with different filters on.

I mean FUCK, when I read the OP, I hear the Overminds voice in my mind and get slight shivers.

I'm more pissed over Abathur being a thing.
It was better when the zergs evolution was dictated by the swarm at large based on circumstance, not by a vagina mouthed worm who does jack shit.

>yfw the tassadar + two zealots installation mission that had infested terran jumpscares

It could be that the Queens only control a single hive, like ants or bees. While Cerebrates commanded a larger brood of many, many hives.

We could assume that the shift happened because of the brood wars, but I don't know enough about the expanded universe to know.

how am I supposed to forget this

I miss the sc1 protoss voices. They were so much better.

>I'm the man who's going to kill you some day!
then the extremely casual
>I'll be seeing you.
my sides

>a day at school
Finally someone other than me mentions that map in one of these threads.

I miss simpler times.

Why does Kerrigan hate Mengsk so much?

Left her in a sketchy part of town after playing patty cake with the zerg.

They should have made him not a god damn space cowboy hyuck
SC1 Raynor may have had a frontiersman twang to him, but he wasn't a ridiculous stereotype. I actually could see him as a marshal.

Literally all they needed was another dream-invasion where there's some bullshit about Sarah being trapped in her own mind due to [zerg post-overmind hive-mind mcguffin] still controlling her as Kerrigan, and it would have made at least a tiny bit of sense regardless of the colossal ass-pull it would have been.

Either that or pretend Brood War doesn't exist between SC1 and SC2, but fuck that noise.

I think they specifically got rid of cerebrates because dark templar surgical strikes were so effective. By handing it over to singular queens, the fall of a cluster wouldn't affect another. Also queens could be brooded quite quickly.

The real question is, if she hated Mengsk so much, why didn't she kill him when she destroyed his fleet in the final mission of Brood War?

She could easily have sent the swarms out to overwhelm what was left of Mengsk's force, same as she did to the UED force, but she didn't. She just let him go.

I remain convinced that whoever wrote SC2's story simply forgot that the Brood Wars happened. The story makes marginally more sense if that was the case.

>garbled, somewhat distorted psionic telepathy, translated into English

vs

>pretty much english with a light filter

yeah i understand what you mean. I misunderstood a lot of protoss words in sc1. i thought they were talking in their own language most of the time.

Seems to be just as many broodmothers as cerebrates; one broodmother even has all the space leviathans under her control. Seems like a dozen or two broodmothers and cerebrates.

I would accept if Kerrigan herself was just used as a template and allowed for the breakthrough, that the Terrans were the only discovered species other than the Protoss with psionic capacity, making raw grey matter unnecessary, that the overmind itself would have shifted to broodmothers given a few more years, or if it couldn't tinker with protoss dna.

>Not posting this

god damn fuck that mission in the Mass Recall re-make, the way units clump up in SC2 makes those pop-up infesteds fucking brutal to deal with when you aren't save scumming.

Man, I missed how we the player were actually a character within' the universe of Starcraft. WE were the great commanders deciding the outcome of major battles. It was so immersive. They got rid of that in Starcraft 2 in favor of "cinematic" schlock storytelling. Fuck, I hate Metzen.

Whiny bitch-queens with really grating voices.

Yeah, that was the shit. I wish Rule of Cool was still a primary unit of measure in modern games.

Greetings captain. Our long voyage is now over. If you're still suffering from the side effects of your long cold sleep a medical officer may administer...

Yeah it was better. It could have been C&C tier when they're looking at the camera as if it's the player during briefings. You could even enter some fight with the camera moving and some handgun/psi blade/stinger pointing out at the side of the camera, like with the demon hunter in-game cinematic in wow.

Not only are you again a character in the game, it also feels so much more immersive, personal and cinematic.

Suposedly, she left him alive so that he could see all his empire crumble, everyone around him die, leaving him drowning in despair, a fate worse than death.
Instead she leaves for a few years because lol evil xel naga, so yeah, shit writting

Anyone want to play some brood war on battlenet?

Serve the hive

>Hes never been so mad in the moment that he says harsh things he means at the time.
>He never woke up one day to realize that he still loves the one he was hurt by / betrayed.
>He never went to sleep night after night dreaming of the days that are long gone, when you were happy for once in your life.
>Hes never been in true love.

Poor Jim. I feel like after years of war and seeing friends / innocents die he realized that he still loved kerrigan even after what shes done / become.

And then after helping save the universe he relapses again into alcoholism and commits suicide after seeing his best friend make it big and become the nation's chief of staff.

Best protoss coming trough

That dude was pretty like the voice of reality in that game and had zero fucks. He'd call you out if you kept doing side missions and shit.

This guy saturday morning cartoon villain performance was one of two things that made the LoTV campaign story worth it.
