It has never been this presperous.
All thanks to our Lord.

its nothing but glorified ports now compared to the glory days

consoles happened

What happened to the Mechwarrior series? Did M$ literally just buy the rights to it, consolify it, and drop it?

The same as the rest of the gaming market, large publishers smelled the multimillions and ripped the soul out of it.

bruh

unno

but consoles and PCs used to coexist and have their own sets of games that were both good in their own ways

I still have fond memories of playing the first game.

>Countless trips between Hesperus and Rahne to become a billionaire by reselling mechs

>Hire the shitty mercs and annihilate them in battle so they don't show up in town anymore

>Shoot a PPC at a Phoenix Hawk as it's winding up to jump, land the shot, behead it, watch the headless mech sail through the air and eventually collapse when it landed

Good times. And that intro to MW2? Good Lord.

That was since the beginning of gaming tard

Get off mommy's laptop, buy a desktop made in the last two years and find out.

>What happened to the Mechwarrior series?
Nothing. MWO is pretty fun in quickplay and the mech designs are the best they've ever been.

did you own one of these? if not get the fuck out of this thread

As a matter of fact, I have two. One came with my MW2 copy. Best thing for Descent games or what?

>Highlander

Mah nigga

The PS2 happened. Many PC centric IPs moved to consoles, and often times were console only. Examples being GTA and Baldur's Gait. Consoles also became the new hub for once PC centric genres like TPS or FPSes, such as Mercenaries or Timesplitters. Halo solidified FPS as a console genre, while the PS2's 98% marketshare meant that any other platform was irrelevant.

6th gen is the best console generation, but the worst PC generation. It was the only time where "PC gaming is dead" could hold some truth. So many games didn't go to PC, but went to shit like the Gizmondo or N-Gage instead.

its no space orb 360

Not enough buttons.
I play better on KB alone than that gimmick.

i dunno 360 was the first time that i felt like consoles could offer a pc like experience, games like COD2 and oblivion looked as good as PC. morrowind on original xbox was pretty jank

I'm talking about developer shifting. The PS2 was fucking huge. One of its launch titles was a spinoff of Baldur's Gait, which opened the market for ARPGs on consoles. The PS2 also had Timesplitters, which opened the market for FPSes on consoles before Halo ripped the door off completely. Rockstar, a once PC-first developer, saw massive success on the PS2 with GTA3, and since then, all their games were console first, PC second (or last), and encouraged many PC developers to move to the PS2.

360 era, ironically, is when many companies started going back to PC. Part of that was thanks to the PS3 being such a huge bomb in the beginning, to the point where it didn't get some of the more noteworthy games like Bully Scholarship Edition or the Tomb Raider games.

>TDM

nope

>there will never be an 8 disc game

$1200 moba and console port machine

Man, I wish we could get another Battletech game where you get to play as a Clan warrior again. The whole honourable combat and huge importance placed on reputation thing could work so well in gameplay if they tried. Instead we just get IS characters in every single game. IS characters who still manage to have two lances of Clan omnis after ten minutes of play anyway.

this is now a classic pc games thread

It's still an awesome hobby that's bigger and easier to get into than ever, that's what. There has always been a sea of shitty games to swim through to get that good shit, but you knew that when you shitposted a hivemind opinion on a contrarian board.

Better than it's ever been before.

>Not posting the superior, more ambidextrous Gravis Analog Pro.

It rose, and died, by the hand of Microsoft. In the 90s, Microsoft was very adamant about the gaming potential of PCs, and was willing to help developers make PC games, when many developers actually hated Microsoft, and Windows 95 moreso. IIRC, they were the ones who patched the memory leak bug in Sim City, it was a fix that was hard coded into Windows 95 itself. Microsoft also proudly boasted the Win 95 port of Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure and used it for a press conference of theirs as the birth of DirectX. Ironically, the game didn't actually use DirectX, but the game's developers, Kinesoft, did contribute greatly to the development of DirectX. Kinesoft was so important to PC's gaming future, Microsoft even formed some contracts with other companies to port games to PC. The main reason for this huge push was "because [Microsoft] intended to take out the Japanese consoles that had permeated our living rooms with Windows PC games", and DirectX was once called The Manhattan Project.

Then the Xbox happened, and everything Microsoft built up with Windows was whisked away. Microsoft was now more concerned with games coming to Xbox and not Windows, for example Munch's Oddysee (the game that birthed the term 'moneyhat') was an Xbox ONLY title for the better part of a decade. No Windows version, no PS2 version, just Xbox only. However, the Xbox still used a version of DirectX, and the Xbox was simply a means to an end. Fast forward to today, and Microsoft is witnessing a resurgence of interest of PC, and something that was never seen before; the Japanese are actually making games for it. Microsoft might potentially back Windows to achieve their goal of pushing Japanese consoles out of the market, and making Windows the dominant game platform. Will it work? Unlikely, since Sony has Japan under lockdown, but it took Nintendo just a few games to be ported to competing systems before they lost the entire market.

I should have fucking backed this

i had that too the 3d pro was an upgrade

What's even the point of playing as a Clan Mechwarrior with superhuman reflexes, fuckhuge IQ and the best mechs in the setting? Might as well just install Cheat Engine and call it a day. It's cool to play as IS against Clans, because you're the underdog. Being clearly superior and stronger than everyone else in the game is no fun.

this is one of the best pictures

Not for me...

>tfw lefty

Consoles got so profitable every dev moved to consoles and either succeeded or failed. There was a time where PC and console coexisted like someone said above but then the PC side was like "well why aren't we getting in on that" and a lot of PC series moved to consoles and were simplified because of the move.

But PC kept getting more and more accessible and at some point people started moving to PC for various reasons, better graphics probably among them, so you have all these console people playing on PC and so the console mindset followed them. So you have people mainly playing on PC who only want to play console games which isn't helping anything.

Now video games are all about spending as much money as possible to maximize return which requires consoles to work and discourages experimentation or making games in niche genres.

Bill Gates was always perfect for some weird photographs. Pic related was when he was arrested for driving without a licence back in the 70s.

Well, there are two solutions. The first is to just make it Clan vs Clan so it's balanced since everyone's good. The second is just to give IS enemies appropriate advantages. Have them outnumber you and come with minefields and artillery and other shit like that. It could be great!
Besides, it's not like what you listed would make a huge difference anyway. Your character is always a billion times more competent than everyone else in all the other Mechwarrior games, and you always end up with ridiculous amounts of Clan equipment super fast too. Except in MW2 Mercenaries, I guess. That's literally the only game where Clan stuff is actually special, instead of being so common that you just sell most of what you salvage because why bother holding on to it? Shit, half the time you can just go and buy Clan omnis. There's just some guy out there who will sell you a Dire Wolf for an actually pretty affordable price. Shit, he'll sell multiple. It's ridiculous.

Why does western mecha so ugly?

because it is more realistic than the fabulously colorful grasshopper robots

Interstate 76 is literally the best game ever made.

>Fucking awesome SP campaign

>Tons of additional SP content

>Fucking awesome MP

>Dat car customization

>Dat soundtrack

>Dat aesthetic

>Dat poetry

Because the biggest Western mech franchise - Mechwarrior, traces its roots to nipnog mecha trash. That's why the old Mechwarrior designs look wonky and sometimes objectively fucking retarded (like the old Stalker design).

Now that Mechwarrior has finally absolved itself of the weeaboo mecha taint with the creation of MWO designs, it has the most gorgeous mechs out of any setting.

>turn based strategy game

What a tragic waste of time. All they need to do is make another Mechwarrior game.

At least they spun it off into a new series before making it arcade. And the games were actually decent.

>not wanting to play turn based Mechwarrior based on tabletop rules
kys

>Battletech Designs

>Western

Boy have I got some bad news for you.

Wouldn't the MWO devs block that? I don't think they'd want competition. Pretty certain they shut down some other MW related stuff for that reason.

There's more complex and fun tabletop wargames I'd rather play. I want mech games for the sim.

>Wouldn't the MWO devs block that?
No they wouldn't, because they're literally okay with HBS using mech models ripped straight from MWO for their TB game. A proper TB MW game is long overdue, the franchise needs such a game more than another arcade shooter ala MW4 (let's face it, nobody in their right mind would attempt to develop a proper mech simulator game like MW3 in this day and age).

How many fucking CDs did this game have? I remember the CD case alone was as thick as a 1000 page book. Man I'm getting some serious nostalgia feels right now.

>I want mech games for the sim.
Then play MWO and let people, who enjoy actual strategy, get their turn based game.

...

Within the first 7 seconds of the intro you knew you were in for a good time.

youtube.com/watch?v=3JCGZFQZkdc

To be fair, all their art has been in house for decades now. They licensed a few designs a very very long time ago and that was it.

>Ripped straight from

Actually HBS is working with MWO's artistic leads for the designs in THEIR game so that both games can match up and stay consistent design-wise.

Casuals.

does anybody still have that link that had file shared all of mechwarrior 1 - 4 and xpacs?

Whatever, the mech designs look the same as they do in MWO and that's all that matters.

>key for your partner to tell you poems
>tfw the first time you use a pistol on an enemy vehicle and you hear his car horn blare

He's talking about them making another first person realtime MW game, though, I assume.
MWO devs are fine with the new Battletech game beacuse it's turn based and tactical so it doesn't compete with them. If someone made a game that actually played similarly to theirs then I doubt they'd be so cool.

>CCG Kodiak art is boner-inducing
>MWO Kodiak is just kinda derpy

I was disappoint

I say "Mechwarrior" loosely. Any game in the same style of Mech Assault with updated mechanics and graphical fidelity of a 2016 PC exclusive game. I want a not pay-to-win mech game.

The Xbox happened.

>tfw this is the only Gundam game that can compare to MechWarrior

Bandai needs to get their shit together and make more first person Gundam games. Preferably something like Steel Battalion that requires an elaborate controller.

The creator of Battletech himself is also working on HBS's Battletech so it'd be SUPER poor taste to not let HBS do shit.

The only complaint I have about the MWO Kodiak is that it's slimmer than the Awesome. Make the torso fatter and it's perfect.

I know that MW started as a turn based game but I'd love to see a Battletech rts by the Wargame devs.

It was super poor taste to sell gold mech skins for $500 too, and they didn't seem to have a problem with that.

You tell me, wetnose!

08th MS Team + Republic Commando + Mechwarrior

sir lev arris

Seriously, what's the problem of selling cosmetics for retarded prices? If people want to throw money at cosmetics in your game, let them.

>Mech Assault

I have hope they will still do something like that.

I'm kinda surprised Japan hasn't done it yet considering IT'S FUCKING JAPAN.

>now everyone only remembers vigilante 8

That's self-contained cosmetic shit that nobody HAS to buy and isn't shoved anywhere but an online-only game without any relevance to the universe or a story so who gives a fuck. Not at all comparable to the scenario of blocking an entire game from being made.

The Mech Assault games were fun once you got over the disappointment that they were more arcade than sim. The real problem was they were the last Mech games we got for like 8 years (5 if you count Living Legends). So it felt like the Mechwarrior franchise was going out on games that weren't traditional Mechwarrior.

Japs are only interested in making third person only MUH FAST!!!! """mecha"""" games with as little effort as possible.

So the newest game is worth a play? I had seen it does have a bunch of pay shit, but is the base game worthwhile?

it's a multiplayer only battle fest. It's aight, just stick to quickplay or you get autists. The free to play mechs are just as capable as the paid mechs or custom mechs

You don't have to pay for anything, IIRC, you can get all the stuff by just playing normally. The core gameplay itself is very good, arguably the best in the entire franchise, but the game has some balancing issues (it was notoriously imbalanced in the past, but got better over time).

Also, if you want to start playing, get in touch with some semi decent clan that accepts new players, it will make your experience much more enjoyable.

It plays very much like a traditional Mechwarrior game, the gameplay isn't a problem. The most expensive mech in the game is like 18 million C-bills, if you play through the training and after your first 25 matches (probably 2 hours of game time) you should have around 15 million C-bills. After that you should be averaging between 80k and 150k C-bills per 5 minute match.

There are mechs you can only buy with real money but they aren't superior to other mechs, they just give you a bonus to how many C-bills you earn.

I mean, back in the days these sort of high-concept ideas got produced WITH VERY HIGH-QUALITY PRODUCTION VALUES

I mean, Mechwarrior, Interstate 76.... and of course CRIMSON SKIES
