>used to love video games >used to love making stuff for video games just for fun >finally started trying to make stuff for actual release >finally started to interact with indie devs, indie gamers, etc >see how utterly arbitrary their wants and complaints are and how fundamentally unpleaseable audiences actually are
>now loathe video games and making things for video games
how do i begin to like video games and video game content creation again
Don't make a game you think other people would want to play. Make a game you would want to play. When you release it, it might not get much attention, but there will be a handful of people around the world like you who will like it.
Cameron Ward
>making anything as a hobby for anyone other than yourself
You deserve to suffer.
Zachary Fisher
Nobody likes a bigot Unless he's crying Boo-hoo like a big baby Boo-hoo waaa People hate bigots cos they're assholes, right? Judgemental agents of fear You know who probably hates bigots even more? Who Randy? Themselves When shedding a tear and crying like a Gamergater With such loathing and low self-esteem Ewww

Brandon Price
I hate goobergrafters too, OP.
Jayden Gomez
What is Sessler doing these days to support his coke habit?
John Morales
Do it for yourself and definitely branch out a little, find new stuff, something not related to video games, people should acquire new hobbies in their lifetime in which they dive
Mason Garcia
>tfw you're not Randthony Burchford
Liam Gray
At least he got his shit together.
Nathaniel Foster
>how do i begin to like video games and video game content creation again
dont try and make them your job. gaming is just as fragmented and diverse as any other form of media. in film there are big budget blockbusters, there are indie arthouse movies, there's porn, there's splatter/gore horror stuff. in literature there are classics that are hundreds of years old, there are philosophical works, there is fiction of all kinds, there is scifi, there is fantasy, there are erotica. in music there is popular music of all kinds, there are myriads of underground fringe genres, there are ancient classics and there is commercial junk.
gaming is like that - there are big budget AAA titles, there are 'old' classics, there are artsy experimental games that focus on presentation, there are multiplayer games that focus on nothing but competitive play.
find the niche (or multiple niches) you like, explore all it has to offer, and enjoy it. being into video games does not mean you have to embrace all kinds of games, just like most people who are into music dont listen to all genres that exist, and like most literature enthusiasts dont like reading all kinds of books equally.
Cameron Collins
this and only this, so many developers trip over their dicks trying to please everyone (see One Man's Lie)
Logan Rivera
>Do it for yourself this is shit advice because i did that and this is what happened, everyone dogpiles it and calls it shit and always has, from conceptual stages right through prototyping
i used to do it for myself but since I thought I got gud at it, I'd like to start releasing things, building up a portfolio of liked and finished works (instead of tiny proof-of-concepts made for fun) and maybe even get a job somewhere doing the same thing
Colton Jenkins
>theres all kinds of genres you'd think that there would be literally one person who would have ever said anything i've ever done was a good idea though
Cameron Myers
Despite the whole "just b urself, do what you like", you should never do that fully and investing everything on that one hobby. Most of the things you like about your beloved hobby will be inevitably shattered because that's simply how every business works, it's always about dealing with shitty people.
Andrew Edwards
What's funny to me is how small things from a developer's standpoint can have huge effects on the audience. You could have players say the controls feel stiff, add better/shinier animations for the character, and suddenly playtesters don't complain about the controls. That's what's facinating about game design, there's a conjunction of psychology, art direction, and programming going on here. Also grow the fuck up, obviously people DO like games and are often pleased by them. The real problem is that people are inarticulate as fuck when it comes to games. We don't have the right words to talk about what makes games work or not, people will just either say "it's fun" or "it's not fun". Silent Hill 2 wasn't "fun" but I played it anyway because it was... compelling? tl;dr the wants of consumers from video games are arbitrary because games are arbitrary to begin with. You can tell people to pretend they're a knight slaying a dragon and that they need to go do that but they'll say they don't want to because the controls "aren't right". Your job is to make a bunch of arbitrary bullshit compelling for some reason even though people could be doing more important things. All this shit's just make believe, you have to make this nonsense compelling somehow even though it's all just bullshit. Video games.
Joshua Cox
this. if you want to see the effects of that, just look at pretty much any drawfag who draws specifically for an audience rather than just themselves. they are all miserable
Josiah Hill

Transexual. The joke is that Adam Sessler looks similar to the guy who runs PureTS, a porn outfit where this guy basically fucks trannies all day.
Jaxon Morris
>obviously people DO like games and are often pleased by them. I have not once seen anyone pleased with anything I've ever made
Andrew Parker
Time & Space, what did you think it meant? Quantum Gaming is the next step. "Play anywhere and anywhen"
Grayson Powell
>and maybe even get a job somewhere doing the same thing A job is extremely different from a hobby. If you want a job making games, you need to deal with audience expectations and so on as a matter of course because money is involved. If you are doing it as a hobby you don't owe anyone anything.
Sounds like you want the best of both worlds, but that isn't feasible.
Noah Hernandez
that sounds like an amazing idea that wont just get me trolled into oblivion
Jayden Harris
>If you are doing it as a hobby you don't owe anyone anything. have fun with your 0 downloads and occasional hate mail for making a product people have arbitrarily decided is shit even though it's not much different from other things they consume and enjoy

He has a wife?
Jack Gutierrez
>have fun with your 0 downloads and occasional hate mail for making a product people have arbitrarily decided is shit even though it's not much different from other things they consume and enjoy Yes, do have fun with that, because who gives a shit? They didn't pay for it, so you have zero obligation to make anything they like.
Joshua Roberts
What do you have to lose?
Evan Sanchez
>you have zero obligation to make anything they like. you have obligation as a functional human and person to produce things people like
Nathan Roberts
>giving a shit about the audience They are literally stupid and the ones that voice their opinion can be safely ignored:
Sessler was always a fraud. Morgan was authentic, coming all the way back from screensavers

Surely OP will make a game that is similar to his favorite type of genre. It's like you're expecting him to make a game that no one else will understand but him.
Jose Howard
>you have obligation as a functional human and person to produce things people like
That's the stupidest thing I have ever read.
Samuel Torres
As an artist, I must ask, why are you such a pussy? I make art because I have to. I don't make it for someone to like, I don't make it to gather a following, I make art because my brain requires me to do so.
If this is not the type of person you are, creative endeavor isn't something for you. Go be a store clerk or something.
Jayden Bell
How about you can fuck off and he can do what he wants with his spare time
How about that
Logan Johnson

I'm OP who said that though
you, in the general sense of "all of us", as a functional human being with full personhood, have an obligation to produce things (or experiences) that people like

Let me state this again, with more clarity:
Go fuck yourself. You do not get to dictate how others enjoy themselves. Go ram a few more cocks into your available orifices.
Jaxson Butler
>this is shit advice because i did that and this is what happened, everyone dogpiles it and calls it shit well maybe it really was shit then if you really enjoy doing something and you're sure what you're doing is not shit, then some assholes on the internet telling you otherwise wouldn't scare you off instead it sounds like you only wanted people to jerk you off for your, oh so awesome, work.

I don't see how anyone here would be fine with having their wives deported, I'd lose my shit.

It's not a racial joke? It's referencing what the Latinos For Trump founder literally said.

Luke Cooper

Have you ever considered that you may be paranoid as fuck and you tend to value negative opionions way more than the positive ones? This place is pretty much as neutral as it gets, you have literally nothing to lose by posting your game here. Unless it's shit.
Austin Rivera
You sound like that faggot Eva. Don't tell me you cry about everything and hold grudges when people give you criticism.
Levi Lee
Sessler is virtue signaling big vidya for gigs again so he can support his cocaine problem.
Noah Stewart
>you have obligation as a functional human and person to produce things people like That's when you said it. Sorry, cocksucker, but nobody has an obligation to spend their free time making shit that others like. Joey can spend his nights writing Naruto fanfiction that he shares with no-one, Susan can spend her days diddling herself with cucumbers and posting about it Tumblr, and Francis can make video games that nobody but himself enjoys. You can tell them they have an obligation to make stuff that "people" "like", and they can tell you to fuck right the fuck off because you're not their fucking slave-master.
Levi Brooks
I fail to see how 100% of everything I've ever proposed, from the most basic of basic addons to existing popular games right around to insane shit that'd take me years to do have all been 100% shit 100% of the time
there is literally no way to please any audience with anything
Henry Morales
>you will never get utterly blitzed on coke and party with the Sess
hurts, man
Adrian Peterson
Do people really post their cucumber adventures on Tumblr?
Luke Howard
Why would he do something so embarassing? Seriously why did he think people wanted to hear him sing a song about how upset he got over that little astronaut joke? And halfway through he tries to get the audience into it and they don't want anything to do with his weird whiny thing and it's almost more sad than "Please Clap", at least those folks clapped for Jeb.
Aiden Watson
Tumblr has massive amounts of porn. The answer is yes.
Mason Flores
>Eva literally who
Gavin Fisher
Wait... proposed? Or did you ever fucking do anything? I make personalized wedding-themed video games(yes, this is a thing) for couples that want nerdy weddings.
Usually I give a discount if they fill out a questionnaire. You see, I want the good and bad feedback so I can make my product more engaging. I have never once had someone tell me that there were no good aspects to a game.
user, you must completely suck if everyone tells you that your stuff is shit.
Noah Davis
if some people telling you you're shit deterred you then you weren't really passionate or truly loved it in the first place. Creative people who are truly passionate, who create because of an urge in their whole being, who feel unfulfilled at the end of a day if they weren't able to be creative, they don't care if some assholes tell them they're shit. They keep doing what they truly love doing, not fazed at all.
Nicholas Cruz
You are literally illiterate if you think "you have a duty to make good things" is at all the same as "you control what things are seen as good"
> Susan can spend her days diddling herself with cucumbers and posting about it Tumblr, she's a good person then, making stuff that people enjoy (porn) >and Francis can make video games that nobody but himself enjoys. a bad person, bringing objective trash into the world
Thomas Nguyen
i love how gamergate died years ago but people like this faggot still bring them up. it just further proves that gamergate won because people like him are still crying about them.
im surprised hes still allowing duke nukem to be a thing too. even that new duke nukem game trailer had strippers in it.
Carter Reed
>Or did you ever fucking do anything? I did, nothing got to release stage though because every time I'd throw up a prototype for people to test, they'd do nothing but call it shit, nitpick things I overtly would say are not yet implemented or are placeholders or whatever, and generally just use it as free trolling practice
Isaac Lopez
damn, adam is looking good
Christian Brooks
Put out then. Let me see your game prototypes. You got nothin' to lose.
Zachary Bell
>I make personalized wedding-themed video games
Please tell me more. What genre(s)? How long or complex are they? Do any of them request ridiculous shit that they need to be talked out of?
Tyler Garcia
>you have obligation as a functional human and person to produce things people like
That's probably true, but it amounts to a non-sequitur, since the above statement isn't the same as:
>you have obligation as a functional human and person to produce ONLY things people like
You can earn your keep as a human with a portion of your time, and still be a good, worthwhile human if you spend the rest of your time on things that do little or no harm. In other words, >If you are doing it as a hobby you don't owe anyone anything.
Gavin Morales
The creative aspect is really huge. We all made fun of it when we watched that indie movie together a couple years ago, but it does feel really good to make squares move across the screen. Even if it's a kind of shitty no nothing little game it's really great to look back on it a couple days/weeks later and say, "I made that". Especially when you can say, I never knew I was so good at X or I bet it'll be even better next time now that I know how to Y.
Nathan Hill
>why are gamers so entitled
Way to show how out of touch you are? There are old people who will scream at you for putting too much lettuce on their sandwich or over a ten cent price discrepancy in a candy bar.
Landon Perry
As a content creator for furries, the first thing you need to do is never do something for someone if you're not getting paid for it, and never do work for money for anything less than a reasonable rate. I decide an hourly rate, invoice my time, and bill professionally. This probably isn't applicable for games, but the point remains.
If you're doing it for fun, don't accept money and don't stress about having a small audience. You don't need a million people sucking your dick - you'll get roughly the same ego boost out of just ten or a hundred because you can engage more closely with that smaller audience. I prefer doing niche fetish stuff because even though it has vastly fewer people interested I can actually talk to them one-on-one instead of having a megaphone relationship with fans. If you're doing it for money, make sure the money is good enough to motivate you.
Aaron Ortiz
Yandere Simulator dev. Used to post here all the time like OP asking for advice. Then he got exposed as a faggot.
Luis Williams
>post your shitty shit shit so i can laugh at you some more you shitty shit shitter shithead shit
Thomas Williams
Nobody owes you anything, you entitled fucking brat. People have an obligation to themselves and to those they love, not to randos on the Internet who seem to think that they're owed "good" content from every fucking person on the planet. When you're doing a job, you're producing value for society, but when you're on your own time, you owe the world FUCKING NOTHING except to not harm others. Get a fucking grip already, asshole.
Michael Thompson
>your game is so bad that even the fucking playtesters hate it
What in the fuck are you doing? Oh wait you're just gonna be vague again and not actually tell us because you're afraid of being exposed on here.
