I suck and need to learn the basics

Alright Sup Forums I just got this game and I have a question. What is the best way to start learning the basics of this game.
>inb4 get gud

play ryu and learn combos.
then fight vs cpu and try to do those combos

Get SFV and start from there

>Get SFV
Why?

because usf4 is dead and everyone has moved on to 5?

Because it's more popular, easier to learn and has better netcode (yes it is)

What system and what game?

Maybe I can play with you.

Pc and pic related

I'm reinstalling, so it's gonna be a while.

I'm also quite new. I'm around 1000 points in both SF4 and SF5. So I hope that's ok?

Yeah that's fine I dont even really understand what that means but cool

watch this and the two other parts.

choose a character and stick to it for a while; learn a basic punish combo and what buttons are good or not.

play online and get bodied, try to learn from your defeat shit like defense or pressure.

Might be clever to start with SFV because it's more alive and doesn't require as much execution.

in about two years you'll be at least decent

>in about two years you'll be atleast decent
nice

When I mean decent it's really decent, you'll be able to destroy any of your friend in a month of dedication if they never played a fightan game seriously before

Yeah I relies being decent at this game makes you seem like a god compared to casual players.

Even if you find 4 a more fun game all the good players have migrated to V

I tried to get a game on 4 yesterday and was met with a plethora of 1000-2000PP scrubs

This is my "USF4 CHARACTER SELECTING CHART".

If you want to learn the game, it's normally better to pick characters in the "Scrubs/No Fun Allowed" section.

If you want to win and have fun now, but don't really care about getting good or put in effort, pick someone in the "Scrubs/Total Faggot" section.

The characters in the "Autism/Total Faggot" section tend to be difficult to play, and also won't teach you the basics of Street Fighter either. Not recommended.

The characters in "Autism/No Fun Allowed" are harder to play for the most part, but still will require you play traditional Street Fighter. Not recommended unless you really want to put in the work... And even then, it's unlikely you'll be able to learn Makoto or Dhalsim as your first character, as you can't do anything with them unless you understand how other characters work.

I'd also recommend playing with people on Sup Forums or with people IRL that are better than you.

They can really encourage you to get better, give you feedback on what you're doing right or wrong and is also a fun way to improve. Assuming you don't play against a dick.

>he bought the entry before the most recent
>he expects people to play
hey guys just got call of duty 4, wanna play a few rounds?

But why is Dudley right in the middle?

Learn your characters best specials, antiairs, pokes, punishes, crossups, overheads and practice them over and over
Use crouching block for everything except jumpins and overheads
Block beats attack, attack beats grab, grab beats block

those are the bare bones fundamentals, after that learn more character specific stuff

Ok, my Steam id is Meowreka

OP, you need to learn the fundamentals.
Google them and you'll find a million and one guides to the fundamentals of fighting games.

They're just nice little guidelines of the basics. How to actually stay alive and play the game, rather than trying to get your narliest combo and praying to god you opponent doesn't hit you.

Left is mostly setplay characters, and annoying gimmick strats. right is footsie characters, turtles, and zoning.

Dudley and Yun don't fit either, as they are just rushdown characters, with few gimmicks, but not particularly strong at traditional Street Fighter either.

The rest of the characters towards the middle can do both, but if they're on the left, they tend have to rely more on their bullshit strats because they're missing something that fundamental characters use.

There's two exceptions on the right, in Sim and Makoto. Neither of these characters plays "Traditional Street Fighter", but are weak in the terms of gimmicks and setplay (Less so Makoto), so they find themselves on the right.

Ok mine is Jackson

Alright bud, here's the rub:

You're going to have to learn. Like you used to do back in school, except you actually pay attention this time.

You're not going to get anywhere any time soon by just basic trial and error. There's a lot of information to digest, and no one person has ever found it all by themselves.

Go to eventhubs or whatever the fuck other sites there are for pleb shit like street fighter, watch some youtube videos, play the SHIT out of training mode, etc.

And not just for one night. Not for a week, not for a month, but maybe after a YEAR you will be at a semi-competitive level where you can beat the average /fgg/ user.

Fighting games are a very dense genre that takes a lot of effort and time to get into, and if you don't have that then fuck off and play some game that will make you -feel- like a fighting game combo master like devil may cry or bayonetta.
