It depends on how badly it flops. If it performs below expectations but is still profitable, they'll probably ride it out and keep releasing hardware.

If it is not profitable, shareholders will probably push for changes.

Because even valuable IPs can go sour and lose value if not handled right by their owners. Just look at Sonic, once a worthy rival to Nintendo, now a franchise so plagued by shit games that only the most autistic people consistently buy every game. Duke Nukem used to be such a big deal that people waited years for Duke Nukem Forever to come out, and after it turned out to be shit people stopped caring completely about the franchise.

Sure, but Nintendo has done a far better job maintaining their IPs than pretty much any company out there.

Sure, they've had misfires, but for the most part, inb4 paper mariofags, when they make a mistake they've realized it and do tend to introduce new mechanics before making a sequel. Every 3d Mario plays differently. The Zelda fanbase is so fractured because almost every game is different from the last. Gamefreak may be incompetent, but Nintendo itself is constantly trying out new ideas with the IP like Snap, the Mystery Dunegon series, Pokken, etc.

And shit, its not like they don't make new IPs every gen too.
