Persona 3 was better, it was truly innovative when it released and established the form of the series. persona 4, and soon 5 also, is basically persona 3 with a new skin. The only thing better in 4 was the battle theme, though I still enjoyed it.

Persona 3 was certainly a much darker story. Also most of the party members couldn't stand each other. In 4 everyone was best friends for life despite just meeting.
