>Wizard wearing armor instead of a robe
There, I just used common sense to make the most broken class in existence.
Why are spellcasters so retarded?

>wear platemail
>cast lightning
>you are now a lightning rod and cook yourself almost instantly
>cast fire
>suit is now red hot
>all to deflect some arrows and a couple of sword hits
You should be out of the way as a mage. Staff and shield is perfect. You can block arrows but don't fuck yourself over casting.
Armor disrupts movements needed for casting spell, good luck having your spell not working 45% of the time.
spell casters are suppose to be nerds who never lift so they could never have the strength to wear such armor
funny enough though, main bad guys are usually wizards who wear armor
so yeah it does make them OP, its just that balancing you know
>Armor disrupts movements
That is a class already, it's called Battle Mage. Takes a lot of skill to master martial and magical skills while fighting effectively in heavy plate.
A good enough wizard doesn't need to go this route, but the intimidation effect and dual proficiency is good for a wizard who decides to lead martials instead of staying in his tower.
Several reasons
>plate armor is typically highly vulnerable to magical attacks, the largest threat to a wizard is generally another wizard
>plate armor is expensive, that 2,000 gold you spent on plate armor could instead be used to buy reagents to cast a sickass freezing spell or a new scrying orb that can see into the 5th plane of hell
>plate armor gets really really hot if you move around in it
>at the end of the day you're still a scrawny ass bitch, if someone gets close enough to start stabbing plate armor won't help for shit because you still have no marital prowess and they are now stabbing your eyeballs with small daggers
>robes are bitchin
Historically, plate armor has been found to be more flexible than the human body. It's chainmail that restricts movement.
That plate is nothing like the fuck huge armor a battle mage/big bad wears and you know it.
Battle Mages use weaponry. Barons are literally just Wizards putting on impenetrable armor.
>summoning mystic forces from other world to bend reality acording to your will only requires the same precision a dodge roll.
Yeah, for some spells, most require precise movements that armor gets on the way
>plate armor is typically highly vulnerable to magical attacks, the largest threat to a wizard is generally another wizard
*Reflect*
>plate armor is expensive, that 2,000 gold you spent on plate armor could instead be used to buy reagents to cast a sickass freezing spell or a new scrying orb that can see into the 5th plane of hell
Geez that scrying sure would've helped you not get hit by a rock in the head
>plate armor gets really really hot if you move around in it
Suck it up. Or Ice/Wind magic.
>at the end of the day you're still a scrawny ass bitch, if someone gets close enough to start stabbing plate armor won't help for shit because you still have no marital prowess and they are now stabbing your eyeballs with small daggers
Or you could explode them and not get gunk in your eyes because visor.
>not enchanting your armour
If he's not even going to play at being a martial, why not just assemble the appropriate spread of anti-projectile and skin hardening enchanted robes.
All the protection + comfort. I guess he's still got the intimidation factor.
>enemy wizard uses counter reflect
>or reflected your own spell
>or created an environmental hazard like fire you can't reflect
>maybe not, or maybe it could have shown you a secret path to avoid combat entirely and you got the thingy you needed without wasting valuable time, sweat, or ingredients killing useless mooks with rocks
>wasting spells on making yourself not hot that you could just otherwise use to kill demons
>implying visors help against liquid mook
>implying you needed armor in the first place if you could just explode them at range anyways
Because virtually every game or setting with wizards has it so actual armor hinders spell casting or robes improve it to the point that they're still preferable. When you get into high-level magic armor then it's reasonable to assume that it's some Space Marine/Spartan shit where it'll rip anybody who can't handle it apart.
Alternatively, Wizards are so fucking broken in the setting that they don't give a shit.
It's still very expensive, heavy (especially for some weak-ass nerd who's spent all day reading scrolls and practicing magic missile), and will likely still throw off or slow down incredibly precise movements, especially for the aforementioned weak-ass nerd. Not to mention, that armor is pretty tame by most game's standards.
> spellcasters need to wear robes as to perform their spells because their robes either have mystical symbols that they need, they allow for the movements necessary or they simply dont inhibit their spellcasting like a metal suit does
In Dungeons and Dragons you get a massive penalty to spellcasting if you wear something like plate armor instead of robes.
> knight who has trained all his life wearing plate armor to be effective in battle
> nerd who studied books for 90% of his life with 0 constitution
> both these characters can use heavy plate mail armor the same
I bet you think that the Fellowship should have used the Eagles to fly to Mount Doom as well.
>Geez that scrying sure would've helped you not get hit by a rock in the head
Yeah, by reminding you to just fucking cast Protection From Normal Missiles.
Does he look like he needs some bitch ass plate?
Also, this idea that you can just mix class specific equipment/stats to create something OP as the plate armor wizard is stupid.
Wizards are pansies who study books all day, therefore have shit constitution but are wise as fuck. You need to play them smart to survive and use your spells properly.
Fighters are pretty braindead and easy to play, run in and whack people while soaking up damage with your massive constitution boner.
Wizards start with shitty spells while the fighter immediately kicks ass, but once a wizard gets to third level magic he outstrips everyone else in the party in damage. The imbalance makes sense and adds to the fun of the game because each class has a unique identity.
Nowadays it's like this:
Lvl 1 Wizad: Spell does 15 damage.
Lvl 1 Fighter: Attack does 15 damage.
Lvl 10 Wizard: Spell does 40 fire damage.
Lvl 1 Fighter: Attack does 40 physical damage.
They have no identity.
>Wearing any bit of armor requires extensive training
Love this meme
>armor causes spell failure
Like I'm casting with electricity or some shit.
It definitely requires SOME training if all you ever wore your entire life was a bathrobe while reading books. Wizards have shit constitution. They can't even climb a wall without falling flat on their ass at least once, and you cannot convince me that a guy like that can just put on plate armor and do his complex spell movements as effectively as if he didnt wear it.
They could put on a bicycle helmet instead of a stupid hat. Survival increased by 40%.
If you don't wear the hat, how will anyone know you're a wizard?
I LIKE THE CUT OF YOUR JIB
HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO EMBRACE THE VOID
Show me a gif where he's hold his weapons
real wizards don't need any plate armor anyway
no, the fire ball glass cannons that are so common nowadays aren't real wizards
That's the point isn't it?
>Haha look a slow-ass knight let me just buff my physical defense and equip the hammer
>why am i on fire
Come on now, why would a wizard want to look like a knight?
How are you supposed to feel like a superior being if you don't dress like one?
Name 3 games that do this.
It's too much weight for spellcasters. They'll take longer to cast spells and an actual fighter will easily be able to target the weak points in their armor. They're often old as well. snd why would you wear armor when you expect to blow away most of your opponents with a fireball and/or can teleport/levitate?
You realize spellcasters are skinny/skinnyfat and don't have the time out of their day to get fit? Plus fantasy armor is clearly heavier
you also can't be a superior being if you're DEAD.
>needing armor when you can create a protective stone layer that doesn't impede your movement and even make it so it auto-casts if you're about to get hit
skyrim
lords of xulima
pillars of eternity
You need to adopt some better spell schools.
that's why i fucking love underrail, psi casters are completely different from non-psi builds and require you to rely on crowd control and psi walls to survive
>wizards just don't pent couple days a week for an hour bulking up in life
You can do lots of stuff when you're dead, plenty of zombies are out there nonliving great nonlives.
>wear robes
>cast fire
>robes catch on fire and you have nothing to protect yourself
>cast lightning
>you shock yourself constantly through static electricity
>cast ice
>robes won't do shit to protect you from frostbite
See, I can nitpick the worst possibilities too.
I if you're referring to fantasy? Sure. If you're referring to vidya? Balance, you fucking idiot.
Defense should be exclusive to melee units?
...
>not projecting an auto regenerating ward against physical and magical attacks
>not amping your physical capabilities up to the max with magic and RIPPING AND TEARING your enemies apart and hit them hard enough to pulverize them
Armor disrupts concentration which is needed for successful spellcasting, as well as the flow of mana//ether/whathaveyou.
>Not enchanting your robes to be as sturdy as armor but remain as light as cloth
>Not giving yourself flesh of steel that moves smoother than silk
>Not using magic to acquire the body of a greek god
>Not increasing your charm to the point that nobody even wants to fight you
>Not cursing and eliminating your foes from far away so nobody even knows what hit them
Hey OP and everyone else: As soon as magic, and anything that breaks the laws of physics, is involved things become illogical and make zero fucking sense. Nice that you finally caught up.
Now shut the fuck up and wear your goddamned robes.
Historically, Steel/Iron ward of magic. That's why you hang a horseshoe on your front door.
Kind of surprised I'm the first to post this.
You need sky-high stats all across the board to be able to pull it off. Without high INT, you're just a knight who dabbles in magic. Without STR, you won't be able to fucking move. Without DEX, you'll just be flailing your hands around and making your magic fizzle. Without RES/VIT, anyone can just cook you with a well place fire/lighting spell. You basically have to be overleveled as fuck, then choose to look fucking awesome instead of becoming a world-destroying robe wizard.
They should of worn Lite, Leather Armour
Or just wear moderate armor?
