Remember.
Wow, who drew this? This is pretty bad.
Sonic general's that'a way
>Polygon footage
GOTTA GO A STEADY PACE
>he didn't read the top comment
at least the person tried to explore. Can't wait to see anyone else get direct footage though.
>Japan getting a 3rd sega 3D classic collection with a game they haven't done before it
If we don't get this I will be very upset.
>at least the person tried to explore.
More like tried to play, they were fucking awful.
You can shit on Polygon all you want but at least acknowledge that they tried doing something that directly benefits fans of the Sonic games by displaying paths not previously seen in any other footage.
What makes you say this, user?
Sonic generals really are the worst holy shit
I don't like Polygon either but it's nice to see some direct feed stuff without assholes talking over it.
Generals in general are bad. See, it's always the same people over and over. Eventually, they reach a point where if anything intrudes on their little merry-go-round, they'll naturally revolt. Because it's always just the same group of people, it naturally ends up being a circlejerk. Anyone who fails to conform is immediately rejected. /vg/ is nothing more than a bunch of closed circles of the same few people doing the same things over and over, day after day. You already know how bad Sup Forums can get. You've probably seen enough of /vg/ to know just how shit that board is. A typical general is even worse because there are even less people.
Obligatory image and a reminder to not be a faggot like this faggot:

//forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=35709&view=findpost&p=865929
Man the new additions to existing zones look really messy and unorganized with no clear progression of game ideas or skill themes.
Hype.
It's even worse than the typical circle jerk generals on traditional forums since the posters on /vg/ have to make sure their thread doesn't fall off the board due to negligence. I like checking out the Sonic general occasionally but it's sad to see them resort to image spam sometimes to make it to another thread.
Explain
It's looking real fuckin' good, it's a shame that Sega wanked away the chance for these guys to do a proper Sonic 4 some time in the future. They would've probably done a great job.
What do you expect from a fan made rom hack game?
oh look its the sonic cycle again lmao
kys
I don't see anything heinous in Green Hill. The middle path is clearly if you want to get to end of the level fast while the top and bottom are for hunting item boxes. And the bottom path gives you an easy way to get back to the middle.
try harder
What type of storyline would a "proper" Sonic 4 have, anyway?
I really liked that one fan game that had the Death Egg land on Angel Island and just blow it to pieces.
I reckon I've known for a long time but it really fucks me knowing discussion about the games is taken away by discussing comics and furshit.
Sometimes getting a good Sonic thread going on Sup Forums takes hours or days and even then people will force their shitty topics onto the threads when there's a general for that specific purpose.
Im hyped because its just a repainted classic sonic game and not some typical abomination that sonic team has been infamous for shitting out.
It can't be helped. The idea of /vg/ is inherently flawed. There's only so much you can say about Sonic before you eventually run out of things to say. Eventually, it just devolves into a regurgitation of the same conversations and ideas over and over. People start to lose interest, but for some reason they don't want to leave the general. They want to keep it up even though they have nothing of value to say. That's why they resort to image spam. They don't want to accept that there's no point in their successive threads anymore so they keep them chained to life support.
It's hard letting things go, even if there's not much worth in it.
it's impossible to say for sure without playing it, but just from what I've seen the addition parts don't show much of a flow in any clear direction with lots of "go right, now go left, now right" sudden changes, the enemies aren't being placed in ways that change up the presented challenges Skill themes is a term from Reverse Design when it looked at Super Mario World* and is well the particular skill the level's challenges are focused on testing. the large number of moving platforms in the lower added are suggest a focuses on timing but the number of springs and runways instead point to quick momentum skills. Ultimately a lot of the enemy placements feel like copies of what was already done in the original layout making it feel like the additions are there just to be there rather then adding any real new gameplay.
The all new zone looks much better though and again take all this with salt since it is just from watching and not playing.
The lack of variety is the cause. On some level, they understand that their general has fallen into stagnation, that there's never really anything being said anymore. But despite that, they still can't let go. So when a new thread on Sup Forums appears, they'll immediately try to push it into a direction that appeals to them in the hopes that new people might join in.
People want to talk about what they like, but they don't want to just repeat the same conversations over and over.
>Sup Forums talking about sonic general boogeyman
fucking priceless
t. Diaperfurry
Is that this game?
youtube.com
>posts picture of the title screen
>has name of the game in the image
>title of pic related has the name of the game
>h-haha is it this game?
Euan, pls
I'm sorry no one remembersXG anymore but this is just sad
They're realizing their decadency.
Because I've that title screen in at least two different versions of the game so I asked for clarification.
Now that you snarkily confirmed it I can say that the game looks like shit.
I've seen*
Yep.

More direct gameplay, this time from the asshats themselves, IGN. You get to hear a bit more of the boss theme in this one.
>we want the Sonic audience
Faggot can't even stand for what he said last time he talked about Sonic.
The life of a journalist I suppose.

A guy on Sonic Retro pointed out an interesting reference in Polygon's video at around 2:05.
>inb4 they can't even rehash Green Hill Zone right
Man whatever, it's just a name.
Yep the entire bottom section reeks of Palmtree Panic and CD level design.
I feel like the top path of Studiopolis is referencing something but I can't put a name to it. The path's remind me of Stardust speedway but I know that isn't it.
Interesting, not sure if that's a good or bad thing but it's neat to say the least.
Wrong webm, but whatever.
Yeah, it is pretty damn neat. And I personally think it's fine, since it's a very small nod that most people probably won't even notice, I sure as hell didn't until that guy pointed it out.
The one-way walls have got to stop. Why restrict exploration like that?
I really hope they'll disappear by release.
Yeah. I've noticed about 3 times that's happened where people try to go back and can't.
The other odd thing I noticed was that the double S tube that's Green Hill's Trade mark is scripted to push you through the middle untubed section as well. Aaron tired spindashing back into it and it sent him straight back down despite stopping in the open middle section.
The automation and forced progression has to stop. This really bothers me.
I tried replicating that in the Sonic 1 port to no effect, for some reason it's unique to Mania.
There's also two cases of Motobugs clipping into the geometry in the Polygon footage.
The latter probably won't affect gameplay greatly but I'd like to see these glitches ironed out.
Message them about it or something, I think getting in contact with them to point out issues would be easy to do & they'd probably fix it. Also mention the waterfalls
New gameplay:
youtube.com
At 2:23 you can see another clear case of backtracking stopped by one-way paths.
I really fucking hope this is just a glitch, I can't imagine they'd aim to actively hinder exploration like this.
Somebody on the Retro forums already seem to have pointed it out.
That's good then, I guess now all we can do is wait & see if they fix it.
Did they give up on making the finishing the project or was that the whole thing?
*give up on finishing
About two or three years ago development started back up again, but seems to have dies down again. At this point I'm not sure if it's ever going to get finished.
>Stealth

You can read about it here.

What's more frustrating is that the game assumes you even want to go down that slope. The guy jumps clear above the fork and the game still forces him down without letting him back up.
>the game assumes you even want to go down that slope
I think it's the exact opposite. It's a path the game knows you want to avoid, probably because it's slower or whatever, so you're punished by being forced to take it if you don't jump over that spring.
Taxman just replied about the one-way walls.
If that path is meant as a trap to punish players it should be more clear in its design.
Like having the floor collapse and an iron beam replacing it, blocking off the path. Something to indicate that you are being punished instead of poor programming.
There are very few instances of Sonic games having done this one-way passage thing in the past but I've seen it alot in Mania's GHZ alone, and now in SZ too.
That's a big relief. Disregard I suck cocks
I like that they lurk and reply there. They'll get some good feedback.
I wish they weren't so stingy with user validation.
Thank god, I was worried about that. I don't care if it's a small thing, I added it to this image.
Do they still have the test in order to register? I first came around the scene in 06 when it was still Simon Wai's Sonic 2 Beta. Questions were about M68K, the sound engine, and other shit.
They really don't want people to shit up their board like other forums
No, you just have to justify yourself to post there.
I first registered 6 years ago but I guess I was unworthy of membership.
You can always write another validation request but fuck that. I shouldn't have to justify myself just to shitpost about Mania.
>shitpost
Yeah that's why they got that system
Every post is a shitpost user.
>Every post is a shitpost user.
If ever post is a shitpost, no post is.
Would you be able to redo that in a day so the post has a date attached to it instead of "6 minutes ago"?
Good thing I'm not the only one bothered by that
Fuck yes. That's great to hear.
Exactly.
Complete global saturation.
>Posted: 1 day ago
Two days whatever, you know what I meant.

I was more pointing out how frustrating that system to display date and time is.
Some never display a proper date.

If someone can link me to the forum post, sure. I didn't notice that until you said it but it bothers me now also.

Let the wait begin...
What if Sonic 2017 features 3D remakes of Mania levels?
I get the feeling the games will be connected considering Mania apparently has a time travel plot.
>the city in the trailer is actually Studiopolis
Here you go.
