That's it. It stops there because anything else is mechanically less complex and thus uninteresting.
Although not critically acclaimed like FFT, the King's Bounty series is fuckin' entertaining as balls.
Shining Force 2 and Shining Force 1 (GBA) and Der Langrisser (SNES) are my favorites.
FFT 1.3 is pretty cool, it stops being good because later on most mage classes become bad due to casting times not scaling with speed, and overall easy way to deal tons of damage with melee classes and two-handed
I wish there were other SRPGs with mechanical complexity, even if only rom hacks or something
I love the job systen in this game, any game that lets you create a dual wielding, teleporting knight with math skill is fucking fun
it also makes the game easy to break and therefore less strategic
I guess Wild Arms XF is kinda similar
I also liked Vandal Hearts 2
Civilization.
>but Civilzation isn't a SRPG you idiot!
Neither is Final Fantasy 'Tactics'.
Oh, and obviously Disgaea: Hour of Darkness for grindy games that take 100+ hours.
I know a lot of Sup Forums including me loves Mother 3
Civ isn't a RPG to begin with
That's just a classical JRPG
FFT Tactics Ogre. Fire Emblem. Disgaea can be fun. Soul Nomad. Ogre Battle is sort of an srpg.
Not even memeing.
The story is total shit but the gameplay is fucking fantastic.
I played the original 10 years ago on PS1, should I play that version or the PSP one?
TACTICS
OGRE
PSP version is shit unless you get a un-stretching patch and a slowdown fixing patch.
They're easy to get running on a CFW PSP, but idk about emulators or Vita.
By the way, is there anyway to do that on a Vita? I have WotL through PS+ and I have actually never played it all the way through.
I'm on 3.61, unfortunately.
sakura taisen desu senpai
Let us cling together was amazing
Oh,right,SRPG,well,I love Advance Wars because of It's overall good balance wise.
I also liked FE 6,7 and 8,but only because of the different classes and because of how amazing the attack/crit animations were.
Also tactics advance was pretty refreshing, you even get to play the villain!
Marche wasn't a villain stop this meme
Is it much better than other Fire Emblems? Cause the series always had some pretty flawed gameplay frankly
It ain't even the best Fire Emblem, familia.
Tell that to his crippled friend.
i'm about 10 hours into awakening, but i just find the map design so bland. does it ever get more interesting? or are the other games any better with that?
Sell me on with, censorship and all. I want to be sold on it. I WANT to be sold on it.
...
If only they didn't completely fuck up the leveling mechanics in the PSP version... It would have been the perfect SRPG at that point.
Awakening's map design is just fucking awful. Even people who like it otherwise will freely admit that. Other games in the series are usually better about it.
Fates:Conquest and Radiant Dawn have absolutely amazing map design, though. Genealogy of the Holy War has good ones, too, but it's rather differently structured in terms of how maps are designed.
I tried it. They changed a lot of names, everyone had a healing spell, and it felt chaotic to me.
>mechanically less complex
Fft is a basic and broken as fuck game
Knight of Lodis is my favorite "serious, western like game". Above FFT and Let us cling together.
But my actual favorite SRPGs are super robot wars. Specially Super Robot Wars Original Generations Gaiden.
>everyone had a healing spell
Aside from White Mage, Monk and Summoner I don't think anyone has healing
It's fun.
If you really can't enjoy a game just because it got censored, then I guess it isn't for you.
The GOAT
Is Tactics Ogre really good? I only played the GBA one till the end and it was pretty simple, I played LUCT a few years ago but not a whole lot, also felt simple
Going for something a bit more obscure, Stella Glow was way better than I expected it to be. I thought it was awesome.
1.3 is a pretty trash mod to be honest. The last good version was 1.3030 and it's slowly become the "creators" fanwank hack. That's the part that pisses me off about it. It strayed away from being a balance mod what-so-ever.
LFT and CCP are both more entertaining mods. Mods that "improve difficulty" are generally always trash because they tend to miss what makes a proper game difficult or good. 1.3 falls right into that category at its current state that makes it worse in both regards.
Samurai and Bard also have healing
I don't play games for complexity. But for compelling characters, entertaining narrative, cool music & pretty graphics if possible, and customization.
I enjoy disgaea games. So take it or leave it pal.
Disgaea 5
Phantom Brave
If you can throw the story in a mental garbage bin, you'll enjoy it. The gameplay was really good.
>Oh,right,SRPG,well,I love Advance Wars because of It's overall good balance wise.
Advance wars isn't an RPG.
You have brain damage.
What are LFT and CCP? Also I pretty much only enjoy these games if they're challenging, non-difficult games don't make the player appreciate the mechanics to their full extent
>front mission fans always fellate this game
>I can't play any front mission game apart from front mission 5
Call me a graphicsfag or whatever. But Front Mission 5 fights were pretty to look at. The rest of the front missions look like shite.
>Hey user, what's your favorite Strategy RPG?
>A Tactical RPG
It's funny because most hardcore front mission fans consider this or 4 the worst in the series as far as I can tell.
SRPGs ARE Tactical games.
They were just called SRPG back then and stuck up. But the correct term as always been Tactical. Stop being autistic.
No one has ever said that.
Bold statement. The dude that did the english translation for 5 does for one. The rest of the games have an interesting interconnected plot and FM3 is more along the lines of an anime plotline.
>cheeze most of the game with a full dual sword monk party
>get cucked by that one mission with all the chemists and the 5 hydras, all the way on the other side of the map across a ravine
Yeah okay, I deserve it for being a shitter but I still mad.
I will never understand why anyone would choose to cheese a game instead of having fun with it.
>implying cheesing isnt fun
>Implying full fist wizard isnt a blast
Proving me right. It just sounds like you guys are playing the game ironically.
Its a serious game with political teachings, maybe you just don't get it.
like 60 hours into LUCT and the sheer amount of sidequests and things to do is incredible. I still haven't even finished a single route.
story's better than I expected, too. shakesperian bantz are the toppest tier, I saved Ozma and on top of wrecking shit she talks some mean trash to the other dork knights.
Ogre Battle 64 remains my all-time favourite though.
Lol I havent even played FFT
I played Tactics Advanced
Tactics on playstation is the shitty no fun allowed version of ivalice without any of the fun and cool fantasy shit, no fantasy races, and is tryhard grim dark shit
This sounds like a pokemon poster.
FFT has a way better story than FFTA I think you'd be hard pressed to argue otherwise. If you prefer the mechanics of TA that's fine.
my issue with luct on psp is the fact I can't try the new characters I get because they suck balls.
this class system is beyond retarded
one of the two things that keep it from being GOAT.
the class leveling, and the crafting system.
Final Fantasy Tactics
Tactics Ogre Let Us Cling Together
Front Mission 3
Jagged Alliance 2 1.13
X-COM UFO Defense
Fire Emblem 12
Fire Emblem 4
Final Fantasy Tactics A2
It's by far the biggest fault of that version. Starting each new job from level 1 is dumb as hell.
>Tactics on playstation is the shitty no fun allowed version of ivalice without any of the fun and cool fantasy shit, no fantasy races, and is tryhard grim dark shit
Yeah, because dumb E-rated fairy tale shit is totally more interesting than an actually well written dark fantasy plot. Okay.
What's that one scene of that one stuck-up blonde guy telling the peasant that she's an animal and animals have no gods?
I don't doubt its story is probably much more sophisticated and well written but it honestly just seems really miserable and depressing.
I'd rather have the light hearted and simple story of TA (regardless of the marche and escapism thing. The lack of fantasy races and guilds is a big deal for me too, i like that variety it has
I used to not like FFT, but I grew to realize how much charging time for spells/some skills was great for balance
Ogre Battle 64
I like that the generics I bench when superior named units of the same class replace them get to stay relevant but other than that, yeah it's annoying as hell to recruit some amazing new unit and then have to babysit them for an entire runthrough of Phorampa Wildwood just to get them usable again.
Probably my only complaint, besides maybe obscure as fuck requirements for recruiting some characters but then that's what guides are for.
How is the SNES version? Seriously I don't even feel like continuing. I'm at the part where I'm fighting Oz(I think that was his name) the dark knight. And I can't take it anymore. I can't wait to finish the game so I can start over and try other classes.
If the SNES version isn't like this I will just jump ship to that on. I know the PSP version is made by square enix's final fantasy tactics developers and not the developers of the other tactics ogre games.
It really is, but it's also shit for Archers. That skillset, save Concentration and Adrenaline Rush was entirely shit.
FFT 1.3 fixes this and a lot of other boring classes
What exactly does it do?
makes the game exponentially harder.
>tfw wakfu will never be made into a single player game
now that's a pretty mechanically complex and interesting SRPG
You're not gonna find a better experience with the SNES version - especially considering the fan translation has bugs out the ass and the team the worked on it got too fed up dealing with the game's shitty programming to continue the project. The mechanics are basically a far less refined FFT but with less emphasis on jumping between jobs. Archers are completely broken and can carry you through the entire game. It's also slow as balls compared to the PSP version, although the PS1 port is even worse thanks to constant load times.
insanedifficulty.com
Gives it more varied skills with diverse effects
>Hey user, check out this sweet new Fusil-using class you unlocked 2 battles before the endgame!
>Oh, you actually want to USE them? Better start grinding then :^)
I don't have anything against miserable stories, I just prefer the writing and the situations. In FFTA it never feels like anything is at stake or really happening. I don't dislike happy-go-lucky stories but it's hard to get quite as invested in them.
singleplayer would be mechanically dumb and stupid. The game is only good for the player vs player experience. Which translates to, the game is not even good.
Is there a FFT hack that overhauls the entire leveling system so job level up growths actually matter? One of the problems I had with FFT is that it actively discourages you to use more than a very tiny select few characters mostly because there's no reason not to give these characters all the exp and jp and two because job growths have almost zero impact unless you're like level 99. Your stats are pretty much entirely reliant on the class you're currently in and you're equipment. I guess something similar to Final Fantasy 3 would be kinda cool.
Slowdown fixing patch?
My favourite TRPGs include:
- Battle for Wesnoth
- Jagged Alliance 2
- Fire Emblem 5
- Growlanser IV, II
- Langrisser IV, II, Der, V
- Front Mission 5, 4, 2
- SMT Devil Survivor Overclocked, Record Breaker
- Valkyria Chronicles 1, 3
- Tactics Ogre LUCT
And there's lot of other games worth playing like Yggdra Union and Wild Arms XF.
I'm kind of tired so I'm not going to bother explaining why my tastes > your tastes.
Here are some games on my backlog; please let me know if they're worth playing, and inform me of any other games I should check out.
- Dark Wizard
- Stella Deus
- Eternal Poison
- Rondo of Swords
- Energy Breaker
- Monstania
- Nep Noire
I'm also looking forward to Shouzou Kaga's rpgmaker game thing. Are there any other TRPGs coming out soon?
why does it matter in such a piss easy game? play a mod with some difficulty or something
The animations on the original PSP version of War of the Lions are slowed down to 2x their usual duration (for whatever reason). There's a patch to get rid of that slowdown.
I don't know how it currently looks, but I'm pretty sure some release of FFT 1.3 virtually expected you to level your characters in a certain way or get fucked.
You might like Tearring Saga.
I always preferred building up generics in SPRGs over using story characters, but generics always get locked out of the cool classes. Like Holy Knight in FFT, and just get that gimped Dark Knight class.
Hoshigami: Ruining blue earth simply from nostalgia.
FFT isn't that easy the first time you play through. Battles like Golgolada Gallows and the infamous Wiegraf/Belias fight definitely kicked my ass back in the day.
I just want to be encouraged to make a large army is all rather than 4 generics which I will inevitably bench for superior specials.
>but I'm pretty sure some release of FFT 1.3 virtually expected you to level your characters in a certain way or get fucked.
That doesn't sound very fun.
I'm not looking for a difficulty hack I'm looking for a hack that simply overhauls the job system to suit my tastes.
Not my favorite but the one I'm replaying.
you are actually retarded.
>I'm looking for a hack that simply overhauls the job system to suit my tastes.
you are highly unlikely to find that, m8.
>That doesn't sound very fun.
Oh it most certainly isn't, but frankly, I find class-dependent growths to not be any fun either, so I figured that's what you wanted.
Honestly, when did that sort of growth system ever do anything but punish you for not autistically switching jobs right before a level up?
Well fuck. I haven't played it yet but I put it on my PSP for a rainy month.
I utterly hate the screen tearing it has for the battles. So unappealing.
If you check Gloria Union you would notice they fixed that.
Shame it never left Japan.
>you will never learn Japanese
just kill me
Tactics Ogre and Disgaea.
Runner up Vanguard Bandits. Shame on you faggots for not mentioning it sooner.
Ah well. FFT is still a fun game, and I could easily find a good SRPG I'm looking for if I bothered looking probabl. Thanks anyways.
Oh don't worry. As long as you have CFW, it's easy as hell to apply the patch. And if you don't, the game runs fine on PPSSPP.
>you will never learn Japanese
You won't miss out on much. Trust me.
For what it's worth, ffhacktics has a ton of tools that are fairly idiot proof (trust me, I'm an idiot and I used them) so it shouldn't be hard to just make that mod yourself. It's really as simple as dragging an iso into an editor with a simple GUI and changing a couple of values.
>You won't miss out on much. Trust me.
How can I trust a literal retard? I'm literally missing on a game. Literally missing having fun.
That alone makes the whole language worthwhile.
A life with no fun is not a life worth living.
I do. I'll take to google to see what I can find.

do you actually rape and pillage or is that just the name?
