Fascinating from an archaeological standpoint--you can see the different fads of late 90s and 2000s development having their turns in each level. Jump pads, Giger-esqe alien hives, modern military FPS compounds, etc. The pop culutre references also run the gambit from the past twenty years. Duke literally shouts "PORK CHOP SAMMICHES" at one point--in a game released in 2012.

The game is, unsurprisingly, incoherent and incongruous between levels. Even things like input delay vary level to level.

It's greatest achievement is being released after its turbulent and prolonged development cycle. Judged by itself, its a poor FPS.

I heard the Gearbox crafted DLC was decent, proving that their my be life left in Duke...but DNF was just a hodge podge of leftover bits of code and art polished a bit and shoved out the door after corporate business dealings were done.

Turret sections really sucked the life out of the pacing. There was also the two weapon limit, although that got patched to a more reasonable 4 weapons on the PC version only.

I fucking hated the racing car and shrunken Duke sequences. Just fucking garbage. I used to love the Duke Nukem games as a kid, but Forever was fucking awful.

The racing car bit was like HL2's "forced" driving sections but more fun.

Overall it was enjoyable, but nothing to write home about. If they made a DNF2 I'd consider buying it.
