D&D RPG

What JRPG really has that classic feel to it?

It doesn't have to be made before the year 2000 it just has to feel 100% old school SNES RPG

It also doesn't need to be a JRPG, but just a very classic/retro/80s90s feel

The more it plays like D&D the better

Try the Etrian Odyssey games if you can stomache the moeblob artstyle.

Not OP, but let's assume I can't.

>tfw you never played one of these back in middle and high school
Short life full of regrets.

I played them back in middle school/high school and I still play them now in my late 20s. Sometimes with my old high school friends a few times a year, sometimes with new people. Never too late to start playing.

Elona

best of all, its free

It's still not the end of the world, as it's really only the character portraits that are anime as fuck.

If you can look past it, you'll find a really solid fantasy dungeon crawling RPG.

You can try the original Final Fantasy or Dragon Warrior for the NES
I'm not so familiar with JRPGs.

Etrian Odyssey is NOTHING like D&D, unless your DM does nothing but roll random encounter tables.

Elona is a decent answer (and an awesome game), but still pretty far from D&D. Maybe OP should clarify what he means by 'plays like D&D'.

To me, pen & paper is about being able to do anything you want (or at least attempt anything you want), and take the story any direction you like. DM had some story about saving the kingdom planned? Players can go with it or they can say fuck it and go become pirates or whatever they want.

>just has to feel 100% old school SNES RPG

Shin Megami Tensei

There is no video game that is "like D&D", because tabletop RPGs rely heavily on a collaborative storytelling process that's impossible to replicate in video game form.

>always wanted to play it ever since I was in highschool
>friends thought it was nerd shit
>all friends in college have no interest
>check out local comic book store that seems to have a group
>they all smell like piss and have acne late into their 20s
I couldnt play this with anyone but actual friends, it seems like the kind of game people take way too seriously and scoff and those who arent already in the know.

>it seems like the kind of game people take way too seriously and scoff and those who arent already in the know.

This is true, especially of autists still play 3.5/Pathfinder

You can still get into it now, it's not too late. Tips:

>Don't be fat.
>Don't be unhygienic.
>Show enthusiasm for the game and try to contribute, but for starters mostly let the rest of the party lead the way (don't do any rofl xD so randum shit as a beginner)
>Do not in any circumstances make a loli character

It's like you don't want anyone on Sup Forums playing this game

This just came out, idk if it's good.

I'm curious about this one too.

I've also heard that Armello captures that old tabletop gaming feel. Not sure how D&D that one is, looks comfy as fuck though.

>Looking for D&D feel
>Not playing old WRPGs
Are you stupid?

More like mathfinder, amirite? LOL.

Id like to invite you to our group but it'd be on roll20 not in person

I hate to break it to you, OP, but there is nothing that plays like D&D or really anything based off of a tabletop system. Your best bet is to get some friends and actually play D&D. Alternatively, you could hop on down to your FNGS and find some people to play with. Better still, head over to /tg/ and find some people to play with on roll20 or some other online tabletop.

If you want something close to a P&P RPG. Play Crusader Kings 2.

Seriously, I'm not joking. It might not look like it but it's by far the game that has given me the most feelings of playing a tabletop RPG.

It one of the few games that captures the feelings of you being released in a world where you can do anything, with a DM(random events and what have you) to keep things interesting

I lucked out.

>be generic neckbeard
>make friends with a ex-car thief, borderline junkie metal head and a handsome model
>metal head is/used to be an avid RPG gamer
>gets all of us into it, and board games
>have some of the best days of my life playing RPG's and Arkham Horror and shit
>get the government to give us free money for games

Then after school everyone moved away and I haven't played a single game in like 5 years.
