Why do people call STALKER an RPG...

Why do people call STALKER an RPG? There's no decision-making or any way to affect the plot except for getting the ~True Ending~ instead of going to the Wish Granter.

>your choices don't matter
wow it's almost like 99% of RPGs that come out today

You play a role. You talk to people. You pick up quests. It's an RPG.

/thread

>A role-playing game (RPG and sometimes roleplaying game) is a game in which players assume the roles of characters in a fictional setting. Players take responsibility for acting out these roles within a narrative, either through literal acting or through a process of structured decision-making or character development.

Then is Max Payne an RPG?

>you play a role
>you talk to people
>there are side objectives

by this very loose definition of RPG, pretty much 100% of video games are RPGs.

> structured decision-making or character development.
stalker has literally neither of these things, there are no decision to make other than those that affect the flow of battle, and your character does not develop themselves in any way

you may as well say that CoD4 is an RPG because you pick up new perks and weapons and do "structured decision-making" in trying to not get shot through walls

How about you rigorously define (or find a rigorous definition of) 'RPG' and then point out how STALKER misses those marks

Then you can make a thread about the rogue-likes tag on Steam

STALKER is, above all, an FPS with RPG elements. It is NOT an RPG in essence.

No one calls it a pure RPG, its a shooter with RPG elements.

well

was pretty good but I'd add that there should be player control over the narrative as well. STALKER doesn't really give you that control. It's still a good game but I fail to see how it belongs in the same section as, say, Fallout or DayZ or whatever

Yes. I don't get how this is hard.

>Max Payne is an RPG according to Sup Forums

Is CoD4 an RPG?

>by this very loose definition of RPG, pretty much 100% of video games are RPGs.

You need to read and understand the part about "literal acting or through a process of structured decision-making or character development."

Mega Man isn't an RPG, you don't make any decisions you merely progress towards the winstate (which you also do in an RPG, that's the Game part)

You don't make decisions in most games that relate to their character or their growth / change, you mostly make game mechanics decisions (picking a powerup or different ability); these things don't impact on the character as a person.

Now if they do impact the person, like they become more evil (KOTOR games), or they become less human (Shadowrun games), or they had to kill a party member to get that powerup or save a party member but lose the powerup, that's the 'Structured Decision Making' part that makes those games RPG or at the very least have RPG elements.

This is pretty much right.

Nobody does.
However, they are very WRPG-like FPS games, with those inventory, trading, stat and faction systems.

Plus, those "arguments" would render majority of modern "RPGs" non-RPGs.

in stalker it's completely up to you where to go and what to do. cod on the other hand is an on rails shooter - you fail the mission if you don't shoot the enemies. in stalker you're not forced to do anything.

This. Same as the Borderlands games.

>and your character does not develop themselves in any way

Did you even play any of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games? Depending on what faction you pick changes conditions within the Zone

Choosing to kill a bunch of good NPCs to take their loot will cause Bandits to take over that area (specifically talking about Junkyard here)

This is a fucking troll thread, you aren't even trying at this point

>STALKER doesn't really give you that control.
It does just not the main story. The faction system and side quests allow for plenty of decision making especially in the sequels. No one calls it a pure RPG though so no shit it's not going to be a first person Fallout game.

I have never seen anyone refer to it as an RPG, it's a survival horror FPS.

Never heard anyone say that. Are you sure its not you saying that?

I think what he means to say is that the character doesn't develop skills independent of the player. In an RPG your character can level up and become more accurate with their gun or learn how to hack systems better but in STALKER it all relies solely on player skill.

>No one calls it a pure RPG,
Sup Forums does it all the time

>The faction system
SoC did not have this

No it doesnt you fucking clown. The guns have stats that heavily influence the shooting and your character has stats that are influenced by artifacts and equipment.

There are pen and paper RPGs with no stats or dice rolls. Multiple endings has never been a requirement for computer RPGs even if I like them. The RPG genre and definition is vague and meaningless.

>babby's first realization that game genre characteristics are overly broad and unhelpful

next you're going to make a post about JRPGs and WRPGs

It does seriously do none of you fags play the damn game? You can pick a side in the Duty/Freedom conflict and your actions in gameplay will affect how the factions treat you.

only retards do, the character performance is 100% tied to the physical player motor skills and reflexes unlike eg. deus ex 1 and nu-fallout where weapons accuracy and damage depend on some stat or skill level

>CoD is not an RPG because if you get shot you die, but STALKER is somehow an RPG even though you have no control over the plot and no character progression

>The guns have stats that heavily influence the shooting and your character has stats that are influenced by artifacts and equipment.
In CoD4 Multiplayer, the guns have stats that heavily influence the shooting and your character has stats that are influenced by perks and equipment.

Is CoD4 MP an RPG?

Those are item attributes, not character attributes. The player still has complete agency over everything, the character you play doesn't. It's a typical FPS in that regard, having items that affect your abilities, as the player, doesn't necessarily make it an RPG. Damage and environmental resistances work the same way in that regard. It's like comparing Zelda to an RPG, it's more an adventure game than an RPG since it all still relies solely on you as the player and the items you have only alter your own abilities and not your characters.

When do you think he'll realize JRPGs just come from early WRPGs like ultima and wizardry?

No, only CoD game that could be called RPG-ish is Black Ops 2.
>multiple choices
>multiple endings
>still on rails shooter, but with degree of freedom
>unlocking shit and getting new equipment for playing good
>OPTIONAL QUESTS
Fuck, campaign in Blops2 was a masterpiece, when compared to other shooters.

>strawmanning and samefagging THIS HARD

you're really triggered by someone saying STALKER isn't an RPG, arent you

>Sup Forums does it all the time
Hell no they don't. Been lurking and posting on STALKER generals for 8 years, and nobody does that. It's always been a "survival FPS game, with minor RPG elements".

Are you pretending to be retarded or are you an actual retard? The game doesn't JUST have weapon stats. It has equipment, currency recognized by the narrative, main and optional queats to obtain said currency, life/world simulation systems, factions and choices which affect the narrative. It doesn't JUST have gun stats.
Zelda is almost an RPG. It heavily resembles old school action RPGs, and it borrows a lot of mechanics and elements of RPG's. STALKER has even more RPG elements and no one's claiming it's a pure RPG.

Black Ops 1 MP has
>It has equipment,
the guns
>currency recognized by the narrative,
CoD fun points for buying guns and perks
>main and optional queats to obtain said currency,
Contracts and EXP system
>life/world simulation systems,
>factions
>and choices which affect the narrative.
Ground War playlist

is Black Ops 1 MP an RPG?

Why do people call Fallout 4 an RPG? There's no decision-making or any way to affect the plot except for ~joining the Institute~ instead of nuking the Institute.

>still on rails shooter,

I don't think you know what an on rails shooter is. CoD is linear but it's not on rails.

>CoD fun points
Are they actual money, though? It's important for currency to be recognized by the game's narrative otherwise it's just abstract points

Also no clue what Ground War is since I don't play CoD but something tells me you're stretching really hard in order to make your dumb point seem more valid.

>nu-fallout where weapons accuracy and damage depend on some stat or skill level
>What is SPECIAL
>what are skills
>what are derived statistics
(You)

Contracts award you the funpoints. Contracts are recognized by the narrative of the multiplayer part of Black Ops.

dont tarnish stalker's name like that you cock bag

>NMA fag enters the thread just to bitch about F4
