no friends to enjoy it with anymore.

MMOs are dead.

Problem was the grind was real in pre big bang, but not enough grind in the post bang. You feel me?

Ludi pq sniping, orbis pq lag switching, toy tower ticket carry over. Even kering pq and pirate pq was fun. I think the worst thing pre big bang was lack of party quests past level 70

I quit for a few months for no particular reason and came back to find out everyone in my guild and my buddy list had also quit.

Because GMS turned to shit years ago, I still play Royals every now and then though, also check out this song: youtube.com/watch?v=M6UapFAuKDY

I remember grinding like hell pre-bigbang just to afford the airship ticket from that forest place to whatever was at the other end, ossyria? Was too long since I played.

Of course like a stupid idiot I heard about the balrog and went top deck to see during the journey, resulting in me being killed and respawning back in ellinia essentially wasting my ticket.

Ah those were the days.

Way to hard to get anywhere in the begging yet if you somehow did get past 70 or so you were really cool
Now everyone is 200 at some point everything is too easy and with no party quests nobody really talks to eachother

This

It's hype once you finally reach that 3rd job advancement, then realization hits at 71 that you can't do jackshit until another 10-15 levels of pure grind.

I played ExtaliaMS last year right before it got taken down, had a lvl ~180 Shadower. The economy and time/resource management was the most interesting part of the game imo, combat and platforming was too repetitive.

except for xbow which only needed a point in freezebird to get a massive QoL improvement. bowmen got gypped hard in 3rd job.

>tfw you can't ever go back to the good old days of pre big bang maplestory

Friends and I got bored after a while. I tried going back after Big Bang came out, but I guess nostalgia wasn't enough to keep me going for long.

Eventually became p2w gambling shit. Literally virtual crack. Fortunately I had enough self awareness to quit before I spiraled down too much.

I'm pretty sure there's still plenty of pre big bang private servers. My friend used to host one for us, but everyone stopped playing after the nostalgia wore off.

When people started duplicating items by disconnecting their ethernet cable

I got bored of grinding.

I grew up.

I miss the days when MMOs felt almost exploitable.

Like in Ragnarok especially but Maple to a lesser extent you could build your character around grinding a certain map or enemy type.
Depending on the map it could be very lucrative not to mention level you much faster.

You'd have mini-communities that would form in and around particular maps.
In maple merchants might set up shop and sell useful consumable items, right at the entrance. Priests could provide portals.
Even running into the assholes who ks you is part of the experience.

Nowadays they work so hard to curate your experience, constantly leading you to the next content and making sure everyone is leveling at roughly the same speed because it's just following quest chains. Doing so gives no time or necessity for that sort of player interaction to form.

Reminder

>ex used to play it and always wanted me to play it
>first night was hit on by a pedophile

cc pls

Leveling up past 25 was a pain in the ass, so the progress stagnated pretty hard

I was stuck on EMS.

>getting virtually raped in maplestory

Jesus, worst that happened to me was losing an expensive PAC

Sorry, I meant in Ragnarok merchants could set up shop at the entrances to maps.
But yeah you'd get a little bit of the communities forming around maps in Maple too.

Maple and RO definitely formed the foundation for my adolescent MMO experience.

As for why I stopped playing.
I got up to around 80 pre-big bang. Got bored of the grind.
Post-big bang I hit level 150 easily and at that point I realized it was just a bloated meaningless number at that point.
I didn't have the gear or funds to excuse my level being that high. People 20-30 even 40 levels under me could out-damage me, so what was the fucking point anymore.

The idea that you need to spend real money to have your character be on par with others is fucking stupid.

...

I never started.

I tried to play it years ago but I failed miserably at trying to install it so I just moved on and forget about that game, I think that my PC wasn't compatible or something I don't remember.

I suppose it is too late to start anyways.

I traded my +8atk work glove to a guy selling NX. Needless to say I fucked myself over as a key way too much.

Same with runescape and people selling trimmed armor.

Game should have had fight game inputs.

Big Bang

IIRC, Aran's have some very basic special attack inputs.
Like forward, forward, ctrl. shit like that.
Or atleast the last time I played they did.

Everyone was using vac hacks back when I played, it was hard to find a screen to grind on which wasn't getting vac hacked.

I still play.

why?

I grew up

Because the game doesn't look like that anymore.

It hurts.

Post comfy Maple feels

>talking to strangers on the comfy boat
>exploring sleepywood for the first time

One reason was because GMS's support was one of the worst I've seen.

Back when I was playing an archmage and bishops were using ele weapons because of a bug, it drove the price of them through the roof and Nexon took nearly a year to fix it.

Plus there was many times where a game breaking hack or exploit was released public and they never punished the abusers.

Then again hackers did make a bunch of stuff cheaper like dragon mounts and gms scrolls.

Another major reason was because my friends stopped playing after it became too much p2w.

For real though, once Big Bang happened so much of the magic that I felt from the game dissipated, the zeitgeist and atmosphere of Maplestory and other MMO'S at the time started rapidly fading alongside the people who stopped playing so all the servers began to feel so empty and people stopped having fun and trying to make friends, at that point it was only about 'objective' and it seemed like no-one had time for fun, they only had time for damage multipliers and weird purchasable NX upgrades.

I just want that feeling back.

At least we still have the beautiful OST

Please post maple music anons. I want to feel the magic again ;(

I remember me and a friend made a maplestory hacking montage using fraps when we were 12. It has to be out there on youtube. all i remember is me hacking with fire/poison mage( which was pretty useless) and we used a fatboy slim song. Maplestory was gr8

Realized that with 10% of the time invested in MMO's could learn a language or two, learn something useful perhaps.

RO had a lot of nude children and young girls

youtube.com/watch?v=VD5vu0QSFRk

he even had like 3 pics of it so he could try to report it to the GM's

Big Bang took the fun away. It wasn't about who did the most damage or who could one shot the biggest boss but to explore and dick around with friends/people whiling leveling.

I mean the game back then wasn't perfect, it was absolute hell when it came to leveling and the game was still shit. But at least you had your pals to make it more bearable

game went to shit after big bang but i still played a bit until after kaiser was out for awhile i think. started in 2005-2006 though and made some maplestory youtube videos like camp piggy pie when i was a kid

>tfw MMOs like old MapleStory and Mabinogi will never be a thing anymore due to a shift in the MMO audience
I get not everybody has time to spend days grinding and stuff on MMOs, I know I didn't, but whenever I managed to level up in old MapleStory, it was such a great feeling
Feels like MMOs are now all about trying to get you to the end-game as quickly as possible rather than making it journey

actually, the last thing I remember was training in the evo chamber after they nerfed lionheart castle or whatever

So is this game fun or what? I might want to play it.

how about that maple gf Sup Forums?
you had one didn't you

I think Maple Story genuinely had potential to be something much greater than what it was.
I loved the secret maps and teleport spots hidden throughout the areas and the huge connected world.
They could honestly have done so much more with the base game they had set up.

Due to it being a platformer everything was just a little bit more fun than it would be otherwise.
Exploring deeper and deeper into the more dangerous maps, climbing ropes and hopping over enemies.
Even just grinding.

>tfw used to make shitty maple animations on youtube back in 2010
>still have all my sprite folders

no i was a fucking pathetic beta perma virgin even in MMOs

>grinding at fog for like 40 levels and falling asleep constantly at the computer
>hunting for ilbis at wolfspiders for 9999999 hours for 1 ilbi
>glitch pqs were better than hacking
hmm what else
>zakum quests and traveling to pianus and pap quests
>you and your friends tirelessly grinding 10+ hours a day fully expecting to one day be the best maplers ;_;

god times

not worth it anymore. in its prime it was fun as a community based time wasting adventure. now the only people who play it are either just uber addicts or older nostalgia fags desperately trying to find that magic again. the magic is gone. if u want to experience a little bit of what it was like at its best, download MapleRoyals, its a private server with a healthy population dedicated to feeling like 2006-2008 MapleStory.

i was the maple gf

no but I made this video youtube.com/watch?v=G8E09ofZaRs

>when the track works and you successfully get into a PQ

The game is nothing but grind and bad design decisions.
Anything that wasn't pure grind was shit for exp and rarely gave anything of worth as a reward.
The cash shop was a fucking terrible way to trade items
Boats didn't do a fucking thing and forced you to waste time (unless you bought a NX© hyperstone)
The grind would literally take 10+ hours to level once after a certain point.
Prices on all items were inflated to shit due to NX.
The channel system was beyond fucking retarded making efficient grinding spot difficult to find.
picking up items and gold became a hassle, forcing you to constantly spam the fuck out of your loot key (unless you got a pet and an NX© auto-loot item)
The skills we're half-assed. Warriors and mages had to invent their points into their hp/level passives ASAP or they would lose out on HP forever, sins had to get that stupid range passive, leaving them with a sub-maxed level of dark sight, meaning their haste wouldn't speed them up (which wasn't a problem for me because I was a Chief bandit. Fucked over my friend though.)
Oh while we're on the topic of Chief bandits, what the fuck was that pickpocket and chakra skill back before big bang?
Fucking Koreans.
Stop making games and stick to playing Blizzard garbage.

for real? that ones a classic, my friend showed me it when it was originally uploaded, that had to be almost 10 years ago.

also
>Dray86 will NEVER finish Maple Kombat

>going through all the old popular maple animators and seeing they havent made any new videos in years

shit hurts my heart

I forgot my pass and little pin. Plus I used a throwaway email

>tfw when I used to (and still occasionally do) have dreams where I would change channels to get rid of certain situations like getting away from a dog attacking me or trying to hide from people

always was trippy when I woke up and realized you can't change channels in real life

Too much grind around the 70s
Eventually they lessened the grind but the game was already dead, then they lessened the grind EVEN MORE so you never spend more than 10 minutes in the same map.

i didnt

yeah man lol dray was always an inspiration to me but now he's deeeeeeadddd

i didn't actually like maple kombat though, I remember thinking the animation was bad at first and then the shit just got way too long

pickpocket was just supposed to make ammo for mesos explosion

>Hanging out in Kerning City
>Trying to jump to the third sewer grate
>Listening to that rad Kerning City tune
>Waiting for the PQ

youtube.com/watch?v=u0hHM7GwdS8

I have this feeling all the time. Maplestory was special. I've never really found another game quite like it. And then they fucked it up.

It was just this simple little shitty 2D platformer MMO but it was so beautiful and real and amazing and I still feel it deep in my heart when I play Royals or something.

>assassin and bandit with haste who jump to the third sewer gate with ease
Smug cunts f5

I know. The problem is that the damage was based off of the amount of mesos dropped, rather than a fixed number.
It made Meso explosion worth using if you dropped 50k bags before hand, but pickpocket dropped several stacks of 10 mesos each. Fucking double stab did more damage than pickpocket+meso explosion.

i stopped being a child

Dray actually is completing the series, but sadly he's one of the only ones as it seems all the other series I loved shall never see an end.

wont let me link to his facebook page but he said he's began working on it

>Listen to white christmas
>Remember staying up late and hanging out with my guild mates when I was snowed in away from home
>Comfy music + hot chocolate + a bunch of great pals in a comfy map
Might be tearing up, just a little.

Alright lads, post your favorite/memorable moments in Maple. From just comfy times hanging with other people or your most proud accomplishments.

Mine was when I was the first to hit 120 out of my group of friends. All my friends waited for me at the 4th job instructors as I came and handed in the advancement quests. ;_;

>Used to make maple animations as well
>Friends made fun of me for it
>Still had lots of fun and later got into actual animation
>Haven't touched my folder or portfolio since it got rejected almost 5 years ago
I want the magic back.

Hey guys, what are some good f2p mmos currently active?

>tfw I hit level 60 for the first time
>I got married in game, but she never got on anymore
>used to have my own guild too

those were good times. how much longer until Maplestory 2 releases?

How much longer until Nexon makes a mini webseries detailing the story?

Dungeon Fighter Online

Guild Wars 2 is technically F2P, but the F2P version is more of a trial, its expected that you eventually buy the full game (which only costs like 10 bucks though). It's one of the only MMOs with a real community left, though that community is filled with weirdos, ERPers, furries, etc, but it's still a community.

I never maxed out pickpocket and mesos explosion pre bb so idk
but i would imagine like most skills in maple it starts out very pathetic until it became actually viable at around max level

lol

Started yesterday.
Playing right now.

Several. The last one ended up moving to be with me. We've been together for eight years, married for a little over one, and have a daughter on the way.

Is it good?

holy fuck, picture?

I know no one cares but I found actually it.
youtu.be/QaQRRyCGFsw
Havent seen this in almost 10 years I feel old as fuck and I'm so glad I wasted my time playing maplestory back then. Truely one of the most comfy online experience our generation had available.

Meso explosion was fine for bosses and cheesing your first 10-15 levels at chief bandit if you were a rich fuck.
The top tier leveling once you hit 3rd job used to be this method.
youtube.com/watch?v=qkxLSioVhAo
Pickpocket was rarely worth using.

installing mapleroyals now, probably going to get drunk and play it for a bit

God bless user. Hopefully things are going well for you.

stop :(

RO was my favorite

It's pretty fun for what is is.
There are a lot of flaws but its pretty charming.
Currently I'm playing between this and WoW and I'm enjoying the combat in this WAY more than WoW
Then again I JUST started WoW also

I will give it a shot, thank you.

>me, my brother and a friend all over at my house to play maplestory
>download hacks for vaccing and auto pots
>vac a map and stick paper clips on our mob attack buttons
>made popcorn and watched March of the Penguins while our characters leveled
Funny how this is my best experience of playing maplestory and i wasn't even playing but it was such a comfy day and one i will remember forever.

Np. Fuck ton of classes and and abilites. I've been leveling pretty fast because of my "burning" character in already lv61 and I only have about 8 hrs of play

I've played since old school maple. I have about 50 dead friends and still have a shit range.
I have been taking year-long breaks like a sane person though

I can't tell if this is true but if it is god damn man you made me smile
