Also why are Cid and Vincent so fucking huge? Tifa and Yuffie look like fucking lolis by comparison. Barret gets a pass because being a giant fucking black dude is his thing.

First time when I was around 12: Cid and Red for most of the game. Near the end of disc 2 a friend showed me how to get Vincent so I used him instead of Cid for the rest of the game.
Second time when I was around 16 in my waifufag phase: Tifa and Yuffie.
Will probably use Barret and Cait Sith next time.

Is it a good idea to have Barret in my party as a tank?
I'm also using Cid, if that matters. I'd use Yuffie instead of Barret, but I don't really know how to use her properly and I don't know if I should make Cloud my tank.

Every character is identical
you can put a long rage materia on somebody and stick in them in the back row with a Cover
or you can save the one materia slot by just using barret or yuffie.
Yuffie has a healing limit break, that could be handy. Since it's such a low level limit break, it's quicker for the gauge to raise. but two of your guys should have Restore-All anyway

Outside of long range attacks, there's really no point because some Limit Breaks are useful and others are just plain garbage. Anyone is viable.

If I remember right I ended the game with Cloud Vincent Cid and came up with some crazy materia combination that made my team effectively immortal.

Can't remember what it was though because I haven't played it in almost 20 years. Gonna have to fix that.

The game is fucking stupid unless you enforce your own difficulty. It's actually pretty fun if you do an enforced-class run.
It's still piss-easy, especially if you make someone into a Blue Mage. But trying to beat Ruby Weapon with enforced classes is actually quite a challenge.

The only way it's more difficult with enforced classes is if you forced them into a role their natural stats are counter too, most often you can see after a few levels what class they're perfectly suited for from normal stat growth.

When I was a kid:
