it looks like they took a 64 controller, got rid of the unecessary third prong, took the focus off the mostly unused d-pad, and put in a more robust stick. That's exactly what they set out to do and I'd say they pulled it off senpai

But the third prong is needed because that's where you hold it when playing an analog based game.

The d-pad is used in games that focus on D-pad input. Coincidentally, these games don't use analog movement.
