Asari appear differently to everyone based on what appeals to them. In-game lore is that asari look like attractive feminine humanoids to appeal to humans only and other species perceive them differently.

In this respect, it kind of makes sense that she's ugly. In the original trilogy (and original game especially), male Shep was canon. Appearing attractive is an asset when dealing with human males, but it's not when dealing with human females. Women get jealous easily, and they tend to hate women that are more attractive than they are. Since Ryder is canonically female in Andromeda it would make sense to show the asari as she perceives them: humanoid, feminine, but not more attractive than her.
