SMB2 is probably one of the most underrated game in the original trilogy if not the entire series.
I don't think anyone has anything really bad to say about it, but nobody gives it the credit it deserves. The grab and go mechanics work well and are pretty satisfying. They really shine in the boss fights. Top that off with 4 playable characters with their own strengths and weaknesses.
Not only that, but there's tons of verticality to the levels as well as split paths and optional areas. These alone are leagues above anything SMB3 had in terms of level design. All of SMB3s levels are stupidly short.
Also, I think it goes without saying that SMB2 has THE greatest ground theme of any of the original trilogy.
I don't think its as underrated as you're saying, personally I think- Wait a second.... what up with Luigi?
Charles Cooper
Can someone explain this egg meme to me? Is it a commentary on bad level design because it's just one obtuse puzzle which is never used again.
Nolan Wright
Like I said, I don't think anyone particularly dislikes SMB2, but it's pretty overlooked in terms of just how great it was.
Elijah Edwards
The throwing sound effect is so satisfying, especially when you toss a POW block on the ground.
Dominic Johnson
Memes have advanced to the point where post-ironically-ironical hipsters are laughing at either stock images or ordinary pictures

I remember playing it a lot on my friend's NES as a kid and it did have this weird feeling to it that I can't really put my finger on. My favourite mario game to go back to is usually 3 but I'm sorta feeling palying 2 again now that you bring it up op
Parker Moore
It's a great game. Funny thing is I heard that it was not supposed to be Mario at all but in fact some sort of game based Japanese mythology, which sorta explains the aesthetic being weird as fuck and the enemies being even weirder.
Anyone have source on this? Heard it second hang.
Easton Johnson
well I mean
Sebastian Phillips
It's Doki Doki Panic nigga. They put a mario skin on it for the American localization, although it apparently was worked on by Shiggy Diggy while the actual sequel wasn't.
Luke Powell
Huh, fun fact for the day. Thanks user.
Parker Phillips
>giving a frog veggies til he reeeeees >mario doesn't wake up in the ending(sleep paralysis) >shyguys >toad can dig fast >luigis jump is anime tier leg kicking >mario is vanilla mc
truly the game of Sup Forums
Austin Edwards
did you actually not know that
Blake Scott
Not until about a year ago. Played it when I was a kid, but I never kept old consoles/didn't really look up stuff for old games. To be fair I'm only 23 and never even finished OoT until 2015 when I got the remake for the 3Ds...fire up the pitchforks.
Nathaniel Baker
Was my favourite growing up. Recently finished it something like 5 times in a row (All Star). Compared to its predecessor, it's short, easy and way less fun to replay. It has long boring parts that aren't hard or fun (floating on a bird, those boring "digging sand" sections with guus chasing). Compared to its successor, it's LAUGHABLY short. It has 21 measly levels, and you can skip more than half. Cherries/Stars are barely useful. You need hearts only if you're not expert, but you know where they are only when you're expert and they're useless. You can get stuck in places (hard to be honest, but there's no timeline so you have to reboot). The slot machine isn't fun and it's random.
The only fun part is finding secret areas, but it's a slog between them. Also, on All Stars, the only game with no level select, only world select. The sequel too but it had clouds and you could destroy rocks/save after castles.
Bentley Cook
>original game not released because it was too hard for americans kek, why do nips think americans are so dumb?
Justin Morgan
Oh, and to make it even worse, I first heard it while watching Game Grumps. I really shouldn't post in a place like this.
Charles Lopez
I don't care if I'm being meme'd on right now, I've always enjoyed SMB2 for the variety of ways to approach the varied levels, the sound and enemy design, and the verticality of many of the levels. I was glad to see many of those elements brought to SMB3 and subsequent titles.
9/10, bullshit ending but still timeless
Brayden Bennett
I've never finished OOT either the furthest I got to was after finishing the water temple I lost my save after that and never got around to finishing it. If there was a save online somewhere that is at that point i totally would though. I'm just surprised because its one of those things that comes up over and over and over again everywhere so I thought everyone knew

The worst part is that the game has tons of unique bosses and NONE of them have returned. Stop shoving Shyguys and Birdo up our asses.

You really should finish it user. Start fresh, especially if you haven't played it in a while. As an adult water temple isn't hard at all like everyone likes to say. Then of course play MM. I got the remake for 3Ds for that as well. Can't say I regret it.
Gavin Garcia
I wanted to find a cheat to get me through the first 3 child dungeons at least on my most recent playthroughs I always get through that stuff and stop out of boredom because I've done it like a million times. My last playthrough I spent my whole time trying to do that speed running gltich to jump slash through the door so I could get the master sword early
Gavin Robinson
Ha fair enough. Yeah after I beat it I started Master Quest, which I must say stumped me even on Dodongo's cavern. As a matter of fact, if you can find an emulation for Master Quest you'd probably enjoy it. You probably know this but enemies do double damage and all the dungeons are reworked. I've died inside the fuckin deku tree.
William Young
Just play the game - it's not unreasonably long or hard. The first three dungeons can be finished in two hours, easily.
Just don't be messing around trying to do glitches, and make some progress.
Hudson Lewis
>Zeldafags shit up another thread
What a fucking surprise

Not him but I see where he's coming from. If you've played the game a bit, knowing the dungeons and what's to come can be a little boring.

I loved it. It had so many secrets and paths compared to the first one when. It's a real maze and I love exploring. I made several plays when I was young just to see all the crazy levels.
Oh right I think I remember something like that from one of the 2 videos I've seen of his
Asher Rogers
Who always picked luigi?
Peach was for chumps, mario was okay and toad was slow as balls. Also where the fuck is this luigi egg meme from? I'm seeing it around here now.

The story was that it started out as a Mario game, then got retooled into it's own game to tie it into some festival Fuji Television was having. It was later changed back to a Mario game for foreign consumption as NoA didn't think the real SMB2 would go over well here.
Mario franchise items like the Mario Brothers POW blocks and SMB's Starman were still in Doki Doki Panic, so it makes sense.
>people these days think the 4-3 egg riding trick was impossible to figure out >these fucks never play games that reward you for experimenting >probably don't even know you can ride Beezos the same way by running on top of them the same way they are flying, letting you skip huge parts of some levels.
Camden Perry
I want more of Luigi floating over different backgrounds. Those are the best ones.
Oliver Bailey
The original SMB2 was just plain cheap for the sake of it in several places. I could see it actually damaging the brand in other countries as it's a damn headache playing it in it's original form without saves and inability to switch characters in a single playthrough. Not to mention the bullshit you have to go through to access worlds 9 and A-D.
Brody Cook
Niggas who don't play it start to finish as Toad don't deserve their NESs.

Someone needs to mix Luigi Floating on an Egg Over the Sea with In the Aeroplane Over The Sea
1. Blink and you'll miss it 2. 5 second level artificially lengthened via auto scroll 3. Door maze
Excellent level design.
Landon Garcia
You can't even call anything in Super Mario Bros. 2 "level design". There is absolutely no coherent structure to it whatsoever and is a mish-mash of random garbage with no rhyme or reason throughout the entire game.
Samuel Kelly
Can you give a single example
Isaiah Cook
SMB2 was real and raw human expression.
SMB3 is an artificially fabricated consumer experience.
