Or has gaming lost a lot of luster in the past two console generations?

I realized the other day that the PS4 is 3 years old, yet I don't love any of my games. I don't even really like any of my games.

To this day I still enjoy playing Halo 2, Crimson Skies, Gears of War, Ace Combat 6, Mass Effect, and others.

I've played the fuck out of these and can keep going.

But after I beat all my modern games it's like the porn meme:unbelievably hot at the beginning, losing it in the middle, and downright repulsive afterwards.

I lose interest in things more quickly than most people and can struggle to regain, as is apparently common with clinical depression. I am also admittedly a pathetic loser who players games way too much. Average about 3 hours a day I think, maybe more.

So tell me Sup Forums; is it them or me?

It's them, without a doubt. I'm 18 and I've found myself going back and playing older games that I missed out on and having much more fun than with any Triple A to come out this year

On the one hand you have western devs almost exclusively producing bland "cinematic" trash designed for quick satisfaction and broad appeal and on the other you have jap devs failing abysmally at doing the same and falling back on producing an overwhelming amount of "cute girls doing cute things" and the like trash.

There's some PS4 games I'm actually quite fond of but none of them really use the hardware (shit one of them was released on Vita/PS3/PS4 in Japan) so it just feels like I'm still playing PS3 games.

I have all 3 consoles this generation and I own like 4 Wii-U games, 3 Xbone games, and and maybe a dozen ps4 games and thats only because I'm a weeb.

I play damn near everything these days on PC since we get so much more niche shit. I can easily say I'm fucking sick of games like Uncharted, Assassin's creed, and pretty much every major FPS.

When I look at the games available this gen, I see a lot of games that I'll maybe get around to playing, but not a single system seller that makes me want to go out and get a ps4.

I have a feeling I'll pick up one eventually, but it'll be a second hand bundle or something towards the end of the generation

I'm kinda with you there. Most of my games on Ps4 are multiplayer games while my PS3 games are mainly single player. Don't get me wrong the games are still good but there's a large lack of games focused on single player content that are actually good

You can get most games by owning a last gen console and current gen handheld. Sony and Nintendo are cannibalizing their own sales by releasing a lot of games on both handheld and console.

Microsoft gave up on consoles and lets you play everything on windows 10.

You can count the interesting games on either console on a single hand, not enough to justify their purchase.

I only own a WiiU because i knew i could get hundreds of hours out of Monster Hunter and would have several party games to play with family as well.

You know, queues in the new year night when PS2 was released (at least I think it was new year) mags which celebrated brutal, sexy, funny, stupid, action packed, scary games and not seen them as problematic or a dummy target to attack and show world how progressive they are.
When games actually had manuals (which weren't written like formal documents), nice box and air of something good and not stench of feminism and over 100 labels 10/10 with quotes from literally who's.
When you actually waited for gaming expos and when they showed vidya you though "that looks cool" and every single friend next to you thought the same and not making mental notes whether the shit you seeing is prerender, bullshot or PC footage.
When those expos actually had the air of great event in the gaming world and were for the players, where beautiful models posed with future neackbeards and no one seemed oppressed and everyone concentrated on the fun and not "aggressive bellybuttons".
When buying game you knew that you are not getting base for DLC or D1 patch or need to update your console firmware.

All of those things contributed to people having fun with vidya which in turn made people form groups to discuss, play and stay together after they turn of console.
This is what I remember as gaming culture.

It does, all of those things pushed away people who were actually into vidya and replaced them with thumblrinas and political correctness who split every gaming community.
As I said, games were a bridge on which people met, those people in turn created gaming culture.
Two strangers walked in a gaming saloon, after 5 minutes in tekken they would talk like old friends.
Those nights when I was playing endurance races in GT2 passing pad to a friend and getting some sleep in between.

Its all gone now, either by dead community or by devs deciding releasing half-finished games is a good idea.

Manuals contributed nothing to "culture" - manuals(and neat extras like PC games sometimes had) were just a thing that was neccesary at the time, and gradually became less so(not due to dumbing down, but due to developers having more resources to put this in the game itself.) Nobody's culture was ever impacted by having those character summaries on the web instead of printed on paper(well, ok, maxisfags are probably sore as fuck, but nobody else.)

Gaming expo coverage and response is almost the same as it's always been(e3 is commercialized as fuck now, but that was coming the moment gaming took over what was supposed to be a general electronics trade show.) Nobody waited for this shit until magazines told them they were supposed to, and the response was the same as you're describing, with appropriate context(mags often covered games pre-alpha, and people wondered if all this shit was what the game and names in it were actually going to wind up being, etc.)

Gaming expos have never been as influential as conventions for P&P gamers are. Hardly anyone even went, unless it was a travelling show like the nintendo world championships. Noone had any fun to concentrate on other than screenshots of shit they'd never see in person, same as now.

I don't know why you're even bitching about the DLC/patch issue. The tradeoff there is we're not stuck in perma-bugged condition, and nightmare scenarios like darklands, or U7's voodoo memory manager.

Also, another big problem is that we don't have REAL GAMES anymore, but interactive movies pretending to be games. This is what happens when story gets the main focus over gameplay.

Graphic novel point and click adventure games, sure, the story should be good, but any other genre? no, the gameplay should be the main focus. This doesn't mean you can't have good story elements and lore in it, Dark Souls games do this very well, but it is in the background and the GAME PLAY is the main focus.

I still love gaming and I am 24, the problem is gaming went to shit and dropped quality a lot, especially consoles, so you need to have experience to not get ripped off and pick out the quality games, which are mostly on PC now.

DRM would and has been a thing with or without valve.
