How come Yume Nikki is so universally remember yet other psychological horror type games were forgotten about that came out around the same time?

Can we talk about fondly remembered freeware/indie games that have stood the test of time, as well as those that have been forgotten?

Anybody ever play White Chamber? Was a point and click horror adventure game in space. The number of endings and gruesome kills was pretty intense for 2005. Surprised more people didn't play it.

Because Yume Nikki was the only good one. And it was freeware.

not horror per say, but cave story still gets mentioned from time to time

Kind of amazing that to this day YN still gets fanart

Name anything that came out before 2004 that did weird random horror better than Yume Nikki? It didn't even do that super well but the bar was set super low in the early 2000's for rpg maker games.

It's like most things that gain a cult following. It just as to be decent quality wise and get lucky to spread via word of mouth.

Yume Nikki thread?

I think games that intentionally are left open ended and not explain encourages discussion, which motivates people to head online to find others to talk about it, which spreads word of the game

Some day, I will get around to playing Yume Nikki

Tonight is not the night.

I started playing it a few weeks ago, it's strangely relaxing.

how long would you say?

I played it, I remember quite liking it too. I should replay it sometime.

Not that guy, but depends on how lost you get in the worlds. Some maps are quite massive and easy to get lost in. If you're worried about wasting time, check a walkthrough on how to get the bike effect, and how to use it to glitch the player character into running superfast, it saves you a lot of time.
But it's not a long game if you know where to go and what to do.

i just replayed it recently. Forgot how unsatisfying a lot of the bad endings are, but how good the true ending is after failing to get the true(redemption) ending

I've just been been doing a blind playthrough, I'm at about 5 hours and have 9 of 24 effects.

A lot of the fun for me is just exploring the worlds. But like said, I can't imagine it being too long if you know where everything is.

The one ending that I remember most clearly is when you just open some door and enter like a beach through it, but then when you re-enter that door you just get sucked into space or something. It was pretty random.

If Streets of Rage Remake wasn't voted in the top 5 then Sup Forums is retarded. Biggest and best game on there by far.

>blind playthrough
That is the optimal way to experience it for the first time, but I actually suggest doing a second run with a walkthrough so that you get to see all the easily missable events. The game is packed with difficult to reach places and events that require specific, kinda obtuse actions to trigger, or events that have a 1/64 chance of happening etc. I'm pretty sure that you'll miss a few things playing blind, no matter how hard you explore.

Is it good? What's it about? Does it have an ending?

It's a horror game isn't it? The two seconds I've spent learning about it seem to tell me you can't die, but you can kill things, so it seems like it wouldn't be that scary, or am I wrong?

Yume Nikki? It's not a horror game like some might call it, it has some creepy stuff in it at times and has a nice atmosphere that compliments that but it's more surreal than anything. You just explore trying to get all of the "Effects" you can find (which are basically power-ups, some useful, some not so much). It does have an ending but it's just interesting to wander around in & plenty like to speculate what the areas/characters in Madotsuki's dreams mean about her & the story the game has (which you are pretty much no definite context to since it's all up to interpretation).

It's good, it's about exploring dreams, and it has an ending.
It's a horror game but a very untraditional one, the feeling of dread doesn't come from the enemies being a threat (they're not), it comes purely from the oppressive, dreamlike atmosphere. The music and visuals are a big part of it. It has a few moments that are really quite disturbing, but it also has lighter moments and areas so it's not pure horror all the way through.
Just try playing it, you'll figure out if you like it or not quite quickly.

I feel the entire game was designed around the concept of isolation. She never leaves her apartment during the course of the game and is only comfortable exploring in her dreams

Is there anything else worth playing that is not mentioned in ?

Guys, what do you think about the game that mixes standart vidyagamey battles/action rpg leveling system with enemies with YN world exploration? In other words, large interconnected locations with some cryptic shit happening from time to time like some random events in YM, secret locations where you need to use a special item, found in other location (so lot's of backtracking and shit)?
Would you play it?

It's pretty clear that Mado is a depressed hikki.

Post more dreams!

Does anyone know if there are any Mado variants of Aniki is sleeping that have been made?

This is Yume 2kki but does anyone know what the song name (file-name or whatever, as long as I can hear it again) is for the song that plays here in the Nostalgic House? I recall liking it but I honestly don't remember what it actually even sounds like.

>as well as those that have been forgotten?
I feel like I'm the only one who will never forget Lethal Application. Best freeware game I ever played.

Absolutely. Get to work user, and I might buy your game.

Boot up RPG Maker right now, you lazy cunt.

I'm making it in unity though

Recently I've been playing .flow

The atmosphere is a lot more grim than Yume Nikki's, but I've also had a hard time finding more stuff. The last two times I played I barely made any advance, and all I can find tat I can't explore yet are these weird doors I can't go through not matter what power I use.

It's honestly kind of a pain, even more so since as I progress seems the game punishes me more for hitting the random NPCs with the pipe.

There's also these weird "menu screens" I keep finding that I have no idea how to actually use.

Guys, I just want to cuddle her so her nightmares go away

I liked .flow more than yn

Anyone remember antichamber? Not necessarily a horror game but it definitely wigged me tf out.

You can't cuddle away one's nightmares if they're dead, user.

>tfw I can play Little Fighter 2 only with the numpad

Because it isn't psychologcal horror?

It's what western walking sims want to be, try to be, and utterly fail to be. There are exceptions of course (Stanley etc.).

If you remember the LSD game for PSX, that's the best thing you could compare it to.

Which game should I tackle next? So far my favorites were Lcd Dem & Flesh Child.

What other games have a big fangame/modding scene like this and NobuHaza?

>NobuHaza
What's that?

Also I don't really know of any, beyond like the obvious Super Mario World (& I guess 64) rom hacking scene and more-so the Sonic rom hacking & fangame scene.

I meant NobiHaza. It's a recreation/parody of the BioHazard series in 2D/RPGMaker.

...

Everytime. Everytime I'm reminded of that in one of these threads. It hurts so much.

Yume nikki is not an horror game, its an acid trip.

Does anyone know where I can find the cheek pinch sound effect file?

I've been wanting to use it as a notification ringtone for a while, but never got around to it till now.

I will never not love this
