Will JRPGs ever be good again? Seems like they reached their creative peak during the SNES era and every subsequent console generation focused more on either visuals or pandering to otaku in same way, shape or form. Now everything either is a linear interactive movie, a combination with some other genra, or hardcore weeb high school life escapist simulator

JRPG now are more creative than they ever were. JRPG back then are all the same shits "hero save the world from evil lord"

nowadays we have JRPG that uses religious theme and gray morality like SMT.
JRPG that focus on world building and politics like The Legend of Heroes series.
or weird and crazy JRPG like Nep and Persona

Dragon Quest is kinda shit, overall. DQV and DQVIII are okay, and everything else is stupid bullshit.

The first Dragon Quest is important as a historical marker, but it's pretty shit by modern standards as well.

More that the scope of JRPGs is now beyond most developers.

Fans of the genre expect games which span dozens of hours worth of content. That was a lot easier to do when creating dungeons required a few tilesets consisting of sixty or so tiles and palette swaps for enemy sprites. Kind of harder to do now when players expect a full, 3D-rendered dungeon.

Trails of Coldsteel II literally just came out this week. You guys need to do research on genres you're interested in rather than relying on marketing while whining like babies on a Vietnamese moving drawing forum about everything being dead.

Trail in the Sky is like 12 years old, dude. The game's a relic.

I hadn't felt the magic of playing a good, traditionally upbeat JRPG for years when I bought TitS on a whim while it was on sale on Steam.

It genuinely reminded me of the same wonder and magic the first time I played Chrono Trigger or Breath of Fire III with the writing and pacing.

The American version of NieR made you play as a big, ugly buff dad and replaced the twink from the Japanese version. It's worth a play even if the gameplay isn't anything special. Music and story are 10/10.

I've come to terms with the fact that the JRPG "genre" is a hodgepodge of stale cliches in gameplay and storytelling. Storytelling especially is important to me when it comes to JRPGs, because only a true autist could force themselves to sit through 50 hours of mind-numbing turn-based combat for fun.

The best case scenario is that the Souls series inspires more action RPGs and darker visual/storytelling elements from Japan.

I've only played three Trails games, but I could take or leave them. The first Trails in the Sky was great, SC turned into a bunch of ANIME bullshit and Trails of Cold Steel has fuck all going for it.

Apparently Tales of Berseria and Ys VIII are really, really good so there's still a few reasons to stick with JRPGs. New SMT and Persona games are coming out too.

The next five or so years are going to bring about a new wave of real-time action gameplay elements, if you ask me. Monster Hunter and the Souls games are massive right now.

High School settings aren't even common in JRPGs. Generic adventure is still one of the most common settings. Just because Persona is really popular doesn't mean every JRPG is taking place in a high school now. Please don't bring up Cold Steel either because it's just another one in a big sea of generic adventure.

Having a waifu-fest with a high end real time action combat system would be great. I think the reason it hasn't happened is because otaku will buy anything with cute girls, so they just keep releasing shitty dungeon crawlers with boring, recycled gameplay.

There are no more high quality classic jrpgs. Lost Odyssey was the last one.

There are still jrpgs worth playing, like Xenoblade, Legend of Heroes, Nier 2 is coming,etc.

But we don't have the cool variety we had, no turning into a dragon like Breath of Fire, no real world setting during WW1 with occult theme like Shadow Hearts, no playing a jrpg where you are playing a mmo like Dot Hack.

Now it's action jrpgs or blatant weeaboo shit like Persona and Neptunia
