FFXI Nostalgia Thread

That's it, I'm resubbing tomorrow and transferring to Asura. Anyone on here still play? I haven't played since early-mid Abyssea release. Is Adoulin a comfy expansion? Does anyone else wish you could really turn the clock back to 2005?

I always wanted to get fucked by Naja and then go out and get her more money

Aht Urgahn was the first time I took a break from XI, I never got to finish the story there either. But I did find Naja waifu status even after I quit.

I want the old FFXI. Played a bit over the past half year or so on and off (thanks to free weeks), but it's now just a good singleplayer game due to Trusts. It still manages to be better than XIV, though. Maybe if I get some spare money I'll start playing this more often.

What do you think her armpits smell like?

Lion a best

>turn the clock back to 2005?
You'd need to play on a private server for that.

And you know, bring an army of players with you because they're far deader than the official game.

Don't bother, the game's dead and your nostalgia will evaporate when you start seeing flaws.

The game as it stands is a completely different animal than playing the oldschool version of the game. That being said it still has lots of different things to do obviously but all content is pretty much done with either yourself or a handful of players. I think there may be a few monsters in the game still that require an alliance but its just whatever.

Sadly OP is right. If anything go through Rhapsodies, because it does ultimately serve it's function as a closure to the game. I don't regret going back for that, although I probably hung around a little too long after they did the campaigns during the Spring only to be left with dick to look forward to for 2 months.

Oh and that AMA they did a little bit ago just exposed how bad and dead things are there.

What AMA? Have a link by chance?

Spent 6 years and 20,000 some hours in the game, feels bad to see it slowly fade away.

We could have had a sequel.

Don't get me wrong I believe they still love the game, especially Matsui since he's been there since the beginning. And it must suck to sit there with a skeleton crew helming the end of THE most profitable Final Fantasy, only for it to be treated the way it has since Wings of the Goddess. But there's a lot here that shows how disconnected the devs were, are and will always be.

It didn't need a sequel, it just needed a remaster like WoW did and xiv needed to never exist.

I'd have to imagine a lot of them feel the same way the players do, you can tell how much love and care they put into crafting the game.

It's a shame that they had to throw XI in the dumpster and then didn't choose to learn from their experience when creating XIV. I don't agree with all the choices they made with the games design, as im sure most players would agree, but overall hte game had a wonderful feeling to it that no other MMO has managed to capture. They placed a value on the journey over the reward, no gear treadmill, and a tight knit community that encompassed all facets of the games content.

Never got to play XI but I remember really wanting to as a kid. My family could only afford a shared WoW account for my brother and I so I never got to experience it. I remember getting a 7 day free trial and not knowing what the fuck to do when I made a character which surprised me compared to WoW.

ARR is a shitty themepark-WoW ripoff that doesn't even do the things WoW did well.

XI threads always make me well up.

Never even played XI and this video makes me teary.

>Does anyone else wish you could really turn the clock back to 2005?

Yes. But not 2007, because the RMT inflated the Auction House economy way too much by that point.

Also, I wouldn't touch the game with a 10 foot pole now. It's a sad fate that the populated servers have turned into a WoW-influenced content treadmill and the private servers (Nasomi, Darkstar, etc.) are so unpopulated that it's really difficult to coordinate a good old fashioned 6 player party in an appropriate zone.

That being said I don't regret the time I spent from 2003 to 2008 at all. It really solidified my love for games and game design and eventually I got hired to do programming for a game studio (not an MMO though). I've actually got a side project, a tactical RPG that pretty much rips off FFXI's AH system but is offline singleplayer. No matter where I go, I can't escape it

>It's a shame that they had to throw XI in the dumpster and then didn't choose to learn from their experience when creating XIV.

The thing is, Tanaka did. But he made two fatal mistakes

a.) The game was made with Crystal Tools, which means that it was doomed technologically. It was an engine made for FF13. The mouse for FFXIV 1.0 was fucking software mouse, because all of the interface was fed through server side -- doing something so simple as sorting inventory or depositing an item took ages. And that's not the worst of it.

b.) The fatigue system turned many people off, especially FFXI veterans who were clearly the target market. It's a bit hilarious to consider that hardcore players were angry, Square Enix looked at all that anger, then did something that would make hardcore players only angier: a casual themepark MMO reboot in the form of ARR. ARR makes the fatigue system look like chump change.

It taught me a very important lesson
>never ask "can this be worse?"

Does Sup Forums have a linkshell up on Nasomi? I installed it recently but haven't sunk much time in it. Starting areas feel pretty lonely but I expected as much.

Gi and okotes how nostalgic

>No matter where I go, I can't escape it
This hits me hard, I'm still looking for that magic anywhere else but can't find it.

It was also the fact that none of the games systems made sense and nothing worked together with other systems to form anything even resembling a functioning game. Everything all the way down to how mana regen was designed and how something as simple as grouping mechanics worked, all of it was fucked.

>private servers
>or god forbid, modern official servers
don't do this to yourselves
just let it stay at it is
don't be one of those faggots who spends their entire life trying to re-gather that sweet nostalgia of exploration and fun with others in some really fucking dead private server

dont be like a ragnarok or maplestory fag who plays the same 8 year old shit for his entire life

It's because the magic is in your past and the past is gone. What you want is not a good game, you want your childhood back.

>you want your childhood back.
oh yeah fuark muh childhood when I was 25

All gone....like tears in the rain

Best bit of nostalgia music right here.

yeah I don't get this childhood argument ever, I'd understand nostalgia but most people I knew who played MMOs alongside with me were well into their 20+'s

To anyone who played XI but didn't take part in the XI event in XIV, look it up on YouTube. It was beautifully done, and had me in tears at the end. Funnily enough, the XI team essentially hand crafted the event and it showed, blowing every other event Yoshi puts in to shame

I've played on Era and Nasomi, and I have just as much fun as I did on retail. The biggest issue about private servers for XI is low pop which shows down first job leveling, especially on the servers that don't have FoV books activated, and broken/barely functional content. I'd give the admin of a server with working ToAU content(salvage, cerberus, ect.) all of my money.

I just meant kind of in the past, i'm not good with words. Move on from FFXI, it 'll never exist again.

what class was your first love?

I got ranger to 75 first, funding my exploits with ram hunting in la theine. crafted ram leather on the spot with my LFG flag up, then put it and ram horns up on the auction house as soon as I got a party

Because someone has to post them

This. Easily the best event XIV has had.
