what does Sup Forums think of Evil Within?
What does Sup Forums think of Evil Within?
I think it''s great.

Patched out
Oh? May give it another shot
yeah you can switch the aspect ratio. I wish the game played a bit more smoothly but I found it scary enough to make me take a long break from playing it after one chapter where you get ambushed by a lot of zombies in a closed space
Just so you know the first chapter doesn't represent the game at all.
The next 2 chapters are pretty good, but then after that it gets a lot more linear and the last 1/3rd goes full action (similar to the non regenerator parts of the Island in RE4).
I thought the game was a really good TPS with horror elements but it's not a horror game.
Wants to be RE4 so bad, but it's not RE4.
There are some good concepts and the setting had potential, but that is all. A shame.
Also, the last chapters of the game are almost unbearable. I struggled to not drop the game.
it sucks
DELETE THIS CONTENT NOW!
It's made by Mikami so of course it's great, he is the master of survival horror after all...
Resident Evil 4 but with worse pacing
Neat ideas, lackluster execution.
total slog. The enemies and monsters pretty much have no reason for being there other than horror game. Is this what resident evil is like? If so why the fuck do people even like this garbage?
love or hate game i love it where as my firends hates it
Legitimately excellent horror game but stumbles into a few pitfalls. Most notably the collision detection is TERRIBLE and sometimes bullets pass right through enemies.
Weapon balance is ridiculous, that fucking crossbow is literally the only thing you will be using because it has infinite ammo that kills crowds all at once.
I liked it a lot. I honestly think people like RE4 more than this game because RE4 came first and earlier in people's lives.
7/10, I enjoyed it for what it was.
If you didn't buy into all that "rebirth of survival horror!" garbage it was marketed with and just went into it expecting RE4.5, which is what it effectively is, you'd more than likely be okay with it.
A sequel could be alright.
did you like RE4? Then you'll probably like this. Not as good as RE4 but still okay
RE4 had better controls, a better story with better characters, better soundtrack, better setpieces, better pacing, less technical issues, and didn't have that awful boring stealth.
Evil Within is certainly a more intense and scary game but not a better one by any means.
What?
Are you saying the fact that there are enemies is bad?
Is this some ironic comment about how RE7 demo didn't have any enemies.
Can't say that ever happened to me (or if it did I just assumed I missed due to the sway).
I played the demo on release and didnt like it. might try it again
>sometimes bullets pass right through enemies.
I don't believe this ever happened to me, or in any gameplay videos I saw. Whenever bullets "passed right through" it was clearly because I missed. The reticule's really damn big.
My personal favorite horror game desu senpai. Not even joking. The atmosphere which is the most important part of a horror game is god-tier.
It's happened to me, I'd say I lost about 3 or so bullets and 2 crossbow bolts during the game due to the shots just passing right through.
And I mean right through, like I see the bullet hit the wall behind the enemy when I was aiming dead center in the torso point blank. This was on launch day though, maybe they patched it or something.
It's great. Better gameplay than RE4 and has best boy.
>a better story with better characters
How so? EW's writing and story isn't anything to write home about, but I can't believe you could call RE4 story "better". It was just as dumb and cliche as anything else.
>better soundtrack
Subjective
>better setpieces
Again, how? This sounds like a taste thing.
>less technical issues
True
>and didn't have that awful boring stealth
I believe you only need to stealth one or two 2 minute segments in the game. The rest you can just shoot your way out of, and the game gives you enough ammo for this if you conserve it well enough.
it's not that there are enemies, hell the bosses are probably the best part of the game, but other than being intense, they aren't scary. Other than just being combat setpieces they contribute nothing to the game in a narrative or horror sense
PC release really helped with no letterboxing and 60 fps
Laura is 2cute.
Also, when the hell are we going to see Tango's next game? Or like a Game of the Year edition? I want to get the PS4 version after buying the PS3 version at launch and don't feel like buying the DLC again or get fucked out of the first run shit.
I enjoyed the Game, beat it and then did it on NG+. I enjoyed the gunplay, and turning the revolver into the most beast OP weapon in the game was a sight. The stealth was very basic but taking down enemies with the knife was always satisfying.
Also liked Sebastian, he was one of the only horror protags who didn't fuck around and actually seemed to know what was going on and have his shit togetber
RE4's story was complete nonsense that contradicted itself at every turn while lacking any self awareness, and its characters ranged form boring to repugnant. TEW is better in literally every way by an order of magnitude.
went into it thinking it's a horror game
first part of the game is basically a silent hill etc segment
then it becomes RE4
then it becomes..more action than RE4? Just gave up, felt like playing inferior RE4. The writing/dialogue is genuinely cringe inducing in the way that only japanese shit can be
>but other than being intense, they aren't scary
Safehead-dude and sadako-lady were pretty scary IMO. Second boss battle with Sadado-lady was a drag though, mechanically speaking.
>lacking any self awareness
the entire thing is self aware. It's like Big Trouble in Little China except in Spain.
...
I always thought it was neat how they removed the knife being a standard weapon before release. Hell, that entire gameplay video that was aping the cabin section of RE4 didn't hit the final release.
In what fucking world is RE4 not self aware about itself?
>Also liked Sebastian, he was one of the only horror protags who didn't fuck around and actually seemed to know what was going on and have his shit togetber
This. I was REALLY happy with how he's written. Especially the way he reacted pretty much like I myself reacted playing the game. It was uncanny.
It is shit.
They would be scary if they had any lingering threat and meaning. The ideas for them are great, but it's just presented as singular fights that actually have nothing to do with anything
It's a patchwork of every gaming trend in the few years prior to its release with a meh plot and meh graphics and meh characters and all of this was directed by the guy who made RE4 to show that he still got it, chief ! he don't got it
still it's kinda fun i guess
Instead of being RE4: 2, it was more like an incredibly Japanese version of The Last of Us.
THIS. This is the perfect explanation. It's a pastiche of other gameplay types of its generation, so as its own thing it really had no soul
I was still mad that this isn't an actual horror game
>inferior
What RE5 should've been. Though I do like its Mercs.
Similarly, I think Dead Space is what RE6 should've been. Same thing here.
There's always a big aura of "This is Japanese" in the game, but I love how the Kidman story, which is directed by the white dude at Tango is OBSCENELY Japanese.
Shining a flashlight into snails to make them moan sensually while hearts appear, only for it to say WOW when you're finished to get a figuring is something only a Japanese game will do.
yes it wasn't self aware at all
pic related, clearly a game that took itself very seriously
>nevermind that one of the antagonists was a zombie midget in his 20s that dressed like he was in the early 18th century
>nevermind that that same guy had a giant statue of himself that could chase you around with a flamethrower
>nevermind that STILL THE SAME GUY had a fucking cartoon trap floor that he used on Leon and that's just one character in the game
>nevermind that leon's dialogue was one liners NO THANKS, BRO
what is your damage, user ?
im an asshole, i forgot the pic
Eh honestly it gets pretty boring after the first few chapters and feels like a rehash of resident evil 4. I didn't want another zombie game, I wanted a game about ghosts or demons or witches. Something really evil, not just zombies...again...
TEW started development as a vampire hunting game set in the future.
TEW's development in general was all sorts of fucked up.
Game is a modern classic.
It would be excellent if Resident Evil 4 didn't exist. If you didn't play RE4 and play the evil within first then you will love it. But it feels like a step down from RE4 and I just played through RE4. There are way too many faults with The evil within but it was still a fun and refreshing game. Also the letter box should never have been a thing but it is gone now or the option is in the game to turn it off now.
Did you play the hotel level or get to the last fight with Boxhead?
That shit was phenomenal.
It was my GotY for 2014. It's rough around the edges but I still loved it for some reason. The DLC was even better in a lot of ways so I'm looking forward to a sequel. Hopefully it'll have a lot more focus with Mikami stepping down from the director's chair. Going by his interviews it seems like he just wanted to pack in as many different horror tropes as possible and just haphazardly took ideas from his team and threw them in. The DLC I believe was directed by someone new and honed in on the good stuff.
Sounds awesome. There aren't enough vampire games.
RE spin-off in futuristic space WHEN?
If that is true then I am sad. Is that why there is a cross bow? We need more vampire centric games. That would have made a the game better than its all in your head meme plot.
2008 senpai
dead space
Our Last hope for a true overe the shoulder 3rd Person Resident evil
It is indeed true. Read up some pre-release interviews. They strayed away from the vampire stuff because what they had just wasn't very interesting.
Also, The Keeper didn't have a design until A YEAR AND A HALF INTO DEVELOPMENT.
>The Evil Within
>Shadows of the Damned
>Dead Space
>Dark Sector
Anyone know any other good RE4-like games?
It was so-so. I still can't get over home completely fucking retarded the MC's run animation is, though. Christ it looks fucking stupid. Especially when he's just swinging a fucking shotgun around in one hand doing it.
Cold Fear.
I forgot Deadly Premonition.
deadly premonition if you don't pay attention to anything other than the story and characters
that's about it i think
Why did I type "home", I'm not even mobileposting
I must just be equally as retarded
Oh, I mixed up the two tiles. Noah was the project Tango/Mikami was working on that was in the future. Which didn't get anywhere, since Tango ran out of money and their published (before Bethesda) jumped ship.
Zwei, which became The Evil Within was the vampire hunting game. You'd play as a man and a woman chained together. Thus, the name Zwei.
>Shadows of the Damned
This game was so fucking good. Shame nobody ever heard about it. Or just forgot, so sequel never.
Just watched a video on it. Thanks, user.
It could've used NG+
Too many things/parts that can kill you in one hit and the pacing was bad, but I enjoyed it enough to play through it a few times. Hopefully it gets a sequel.
You welcome user
Yeah, the one hit kill bosses ruined most of the boss fights with me as it just killed the tension instantly as I was killed without being able to do anything.
The other part of that is that the game teaches you to run away most of the time to gain space to fight them but you can sprint for 2 seconds before Sebastion becomes winded and doesn't have a good walking speed so they can easily catch up.
Better than any campy ass RE game could ever hope to be.
It's not perfect, but it's as close as it gets in my books.
I fucking love TEW.
If you haven't beaten AKUMU mode, get on my level.
Fucking casuals.
This is what Sup Forums has become.
Go back to your Nintendo games.
Mah nigga.
Cut from the same cloth.
basically inferior to RE4 in every way possible all while trying to be it at the same time.
no idea why the bone and ps4 ver don't run 60fps.
...
I remember people giving me shit for comparing the controls and some of the game mechanics to The Last of Us.
Do people really not see any sort of similarities between the two?
I'm serious.
EW controls all slippery and lacks the tightness of RE4's flawless controls scheme.
even the inventory system in RE4 blows EW's out of the water. i will give EW one thing it has over RE4 and thats the ability to map weapons to the D-pad. that was smart.
the general gameplay was deeper in RE4- and while the stealth mechanics in EW were fairly solid, they were not utilized enough as they could have been.
also EW has the ability to fucking irritate me due to its utterly shitty pacing and tendency to shunt me forward due to bullshit story shit. RE4 kept that retardedness down to an absolute minimum and for the most part kept you in control of leon without the game teleporting you to god knows where.
lolno
Akumu mode is not fun. It's a slog. Instant failure conditions in games not designed for it are homosex.
why did the the ps4 ver run 30 fps like the ps3 ver?
there is no excuse for it if mugs was running 60fps and splaying 1080p.
even doom and shadow warrior managed it.
I don't EW was meant to be a full RE4 clone, because if it did. It actually would be in every which way if Mikami wanted.
It's almost like, it's really just a 3rd person action game trying to be it's own thing but keeps getting compared to RE4 just because 'director name' Also RE4 wasn't exactly survivor horror, more like action horror, dead space-esque. But the same can be said for EW. But apparently survival horror became defined with what P.T brought when EW was released.
Now that RE7 is actually apparently bringing that people now complain tank control camera angles is true survival horror.
It's a cluster fuck.
Casualfag. lol.
Go play some Minecraft, okay? Don't worry. Nobody is judging you.
>t's almost like, it's really just a 3rd person action game trying to be it's own thing but keeps getting compared to RE4 just because 'director name' Also RE4 wasn't exactly survivor horror, more like action horror, dead space-esque. this is bullshit because so much of the story and concepts in EW are ripped from RE4.
even characters are sorta copies of characters from RE4...
kidman has a very similar role as Ada.
the doc while his personality was different- his role in the plot was the same as Luis'.
chainsaw maniacs
european villages
medieval castles
giant ogres
bear traps
there are just so many similarities that its hard to judge EW on its own merits because so much of it is so derivative from RE4.
the ideas that aren't recycled from RE4 are ideas cribbed from sources like silent hill or nightmare on elm street.
Play the game until you reach Chapter 7 which I believe is where you enter the city / action. The game goes full retard in terms of trying to finalize the story. Keys and vats had me searching high and low for secrets which I always enjoy. Also, the last boss is a QTE so take that for what you will.
The height of this game is when you reach the catacombs underneath the graveyard. Absolutely incredible horror gameplay there.
You reach the city in chapter eleven or twelve. Game ends at sixteen, I believe. I agree about the catacombs. Loved that shit.
also bullshit turret sequences.
EW was a culmination of so much wrong with how devs have lost sight of survival horror
Letterbox adds to atmosphere of the game, nigger.
Solid 7.5 game, mediocre story, game play was alright and has some pretty intense parts near the beginning.
Use fire.
Don't know how it can rip off RE4 when the director made RE4.
Anywho the villages and castles are from Kidman's home from when she was a kid and most of everything else has had its backstory settled.
Kidman and Ada are completely different arc types. Kidman doesn't seem like action girl female leon/femme fatale, Kidman's
Kidman was just a mole who ended up going native.
Joseph lives and he will be back.
Perfect husbandfu
Mikamifags were assblasted that this wasn't there new RE4 at the time and that The Last of Us was praised so heavily.
Didn't help RERevelations 2 and Alien Isolation released around the same time as TEW.
I used cheats because there was too much forced combat.
>Don't know how it can rip off RE4 when the director made RE4.
because its unoriginal.
its like a comedian telling the same joke over and over.
>Anywho the villages and castles are from Kidman's home from when she was a kid and most of everything else has had its backstory settled.
irrelevent to the fact that these were the same concepts and visuals that defined RE4.
>Kidman and Ada are completely different arc types. Kidman doesn't seem like action girl female leon/femme fatale, Kidman's
granted.
BUT they both are working to serve their own agenda and both are employed by a shadowy mastermind from behind the scenes.
i was shocked at the time how EW let me down but how Alien Isolation blew me away.
alien... that was a game i seriously under estimated.
