Just started Driv3er. What am I in for? I hear it's terrible, but I wanted to see for myself.
Are the later games in the series worthwhile? Are the previous any good? I remember playing the first Driver back in the day, but I don't remember it as being a particularly good game. Should I give it another chance?
The skybox is the prettiest thing in the game, and that's saying something.

I used to spend hours and hours free-roaming Nice. Best city, best cars - and strangely, a great atmosphere despite the lack of EVERYTHING you would expect in a decent open world game. Hunting down the hidden cars in free-roam was good fun too.
And the driving itself is very, very good. I always wondered if GTA IV looked at it - similar feel and similar damage model. GTA V was a big step back in this regard.
Robert Hughes
Heh, strange to see someone actually noting some good points about the game. The driving does feel rather fluid, I'll give you that.
Will check it out. I love learning the behind-the-scenes stories of shitty products.

I agree with that user also. I played Driver 1 through 3 back a long time ago, they all had great driving IMO. I thought Driver 3 got really boring in Istanbul for some reason, and the TPS parts were pretty much shit.

The game required a god damn monster of a computer back in the day, it was fucking ridiculous.
Some cool things were the bullet holes though, those were pretty god damn TECHNOLOGY. I remember the cops reacting to stupid stuff you did like burnouts, speeding, driving through reds and other stuff like that which was pretty nice.
It was actually quite easy really, just spam L1 everywhere and you're golden.

Was it mandatory? I remember having play through several missions of Driver back in the day, but I don't remember any training. It's possible I found it easy back then. Several games/levels that caused no problem when I was a kid are quite difficult for me now for some reason.
Also, should I play Driver and Driver 2, or have they aged badly?

>mfw i fell for this game
David Wilson
What do you mean by 'fell'? You bought it back then and regretted it soon afterwards?
It seems a lot of posters in this thread managed to enjoy the game despite its flaws. Why couldn't you?

>Just started Driv3er. What am I in for?
Pure garbage.
>Are the later games in the series worthwhile?
Driver San Francisco is a brilliant game, not as gritty or serious as the earlier games, but an absolute must play if you enjoy open world driving games.
>Are the previous any good? I remember playing the first Driver back in the day, but I don't remember it as being a particularly good game. Should I give it another chance?
The original Driver was brilliant and absolutely mind blowing when it came out, but even as a huge fan I couldn't recommend it, it's aged like milk and it's really not worth going back to. Everything that followed was painfully shit, Driver 2 was simply too ambitious for the tech of the time and was really fucking rough, Driver 3, garbage, Parallel Lines, more garbage, Driver 76, mobile garbage, Renegade 3D, more mobile garbage....and then came Speedboat Paradise.......don't even get me fucking started on Speedboat Paradise.
Although if you have a PS2 and are feeling particularly masochistic pick up Stuntman.

Driv3r is a good game if you like driving, there's not much to say about that. The last missions are particularly challenging and tense, which is good, but the very final is another of those crap shooting sections.
Parallel Lines is four steps forward, two back. Driving is as each single bit as good as in 3, missions and the ambient during the first half of the game, staged on the late 70s, have as much or more personality than Vice City, but drops the ball on the 'modern' era where your usual comment is Ow The Edge. Shooting went from Utter Shit to Just Bad.
Driver San Francisco is the damn pinacle of the series. The shift mechanic is fun as fuck, the game oozes a nicely done 70's cop series, cop partners and all, self aware cheesyness. No more shooting parts, infact, no more foot parts, allowing you to focus on just driving. Driving more precise, but takes from games like Need for Speed in that cars feel they have no weigh when they crash unless you're using a semi truck. Overall a great game everyone passed by.
Jackson Edwards
Yeah it was the "driving license' mission before you could start the game. You had to do all the moves without stopping the car or braking. It was needlessly difficult for a beginner mission.
Aaron Johnson
Was it omitted from the PC version, perhaps? Because I played that one.
Aaron Robinson
It was on the PC version, but it's one of those things that most people only had to attempt a couple of times....whereas others have been raging at it's existence for the last 17 years.
the game felt so soulless and empty to me in comparison to gta 3/vice city.
i could only play it for 30 minutes at a time before turning it off.
i also fell for true crime streets of la
Chase Richardson
>i also fell for true crime streets of la Interestingly enough, Driv3r does feel and play a lot like Streets of LA.
Cameron Russell
Great music
everything else is pretty much a bland buggy GTA ripoff
not really a positive in current year but i do recall it being one of the first PS2 games to have dynamic shadows that moved with the time of day

>I wanted to see for myself. >created a "what am I in for" thread instead of seeing it for himself
Nicholas Murphy
While I'm seeing it for myself, I also want to know what Sup Forums thought of it.
Sounds reasonable to me.

Alright, so I downloaded the first Driver game and holy shit, are you kidding me? How did I ever pass this when I was a kid?
Parker Howard
Play Parallel Lines instead, it's a solid 7/10 game with nice physics and soundtrack. Driv3r is a perfect game... for youtube vids mocking its badness.
Jackson Green
What's wrong with him, he does not push his politics in his vids, so he is alright in my eyes.
Elijah Cruz
Finally. God damn it, the reverse 180 was a bitch to pull off.
