This is true.
I know because I liked Q3A way more, but never found that many people to play with compared to UT.
Not at my local internet cafe. They stopped playing Q3A when CS came out though
Only the shitters. UT movement is fucking garbage.
I guess that's why Quake 3 wasn't popular, and faded into obscurity.
I preferred UT. It had had more modes.
UT had fun new weapons, QA was just more of the same shotgun, rocket launcher, etc..
I prefer UT because it had headshots and I was filthy with the sniper rifle.
As far as I'm concerned quake is still a better game on a mechanical level.
Because UT was casual with no interesting movement mechanics that took time to master.
Weapons in UT also had mixed roles and the gameplay was based on being imbalanced like QuakeWorld (Strong weapons instead of roles).
UT is a shit Quake
Overwatch is a shit TF2
CoD is a shit CSGO
UT was literally a reskin of Unreal, weapons and all, even half the maps and without singleplayer though
Quake 3 is a casualized Quakeworld, there is absolutely nothing wrong with weapons the player would prioritize having more.
That's why it was fun. Unreal weapons were more creative than Quake weapons.
your complaint was that Quake 3 had reskinned weapons when UT was almost a 1:1 reskin of Unreal, that is my point. at least Quake 3 added in weapons like the plasma gun and machinegun and the weapons available were different in more than just skins, including damage and speed
Not the same person. Just saying UT is better.
QW and Quake 3 are completely different types of games. QW is hyper aggressive and is balanced from imbalance and heavily relies on aim with little strategy, whereas Q3A is extremely defensive and much slower and strategy can trump any high-aimer.
It's not casualised, it's a different meta entirely.
ok
>its just slower and more forgiving with mechanics like letting you pickup weapons again for ammo
>that doesn't mean it was casualized! ill just act like quake 1 takes "little" strategy verses my railcamping!
nah, being slower does not mean you think more
I prefer UT2004, mainly for the fucking amazing flak cannon.
Seriously, that weapon was a total beast, only rivalled by the railgun in Q2
UT99's flak cannon was more OP but less effective at a distance
the light streams are what made it so satisfying, people really underestimate the power good animations can have on gameplay. ut2k4 holds all my favorite versions of the guns
Instead of the game being about raw aim, it's about aim and strategy. you're fucking retarded nvm.
>balanced from imbalance
you have imbalanced weapons and pickups that are "the best" so the whole objective relies on getting these imbalanced items
just please fucking slit your throat you fucking teenage faggot don't comment on shit you don't understand
you have never played quake 1
every game has weapon roles and priorities including Quake 3, don't pretend that is a complaint too. its impossible to be balanced and then at the same time not be fucking balanced
quake 3 is fundamentally better than UT but i can understand why people prefer UT because it has more content and variety of gamemodes etc out of the box
QW doesn't though you absolute autist
fuck these kids who haven't even touched a game posting about it
execute yourself
Just hearing the SHRED, the gaseous blood of gibs as you run through it and the hilarity of THAT shot shredding another person through sheer angular luck is so fucking satisfying.
I think the only other weapon that made me feel similar was Dark Forces' Stouker Concussion Rifle.
UT had fun weapons and mutators.
Q3 was tryhard.
Both dropped when CS hits.
>Q3A is extremly defensive
what the fuck am I reading. Were you one of those shits who camped with railgun near the flag because they played CS too much?
This post alone tells me that you have never played Q3 outside of pub servers and you got stomped when you did.
>all these people pushing counterstrike
Counterstrike was the call of duty of the 90s, slow as fuck campy bullshit, everyone dies in 2 bullets, can't jump for shit, all the guns are pretty much the same, cone of fire rng bullshit and spray patterns, tiny simple maps for tiny simple minded people.
And frankly the only reason anybody played that shit was because it had "real guns"
hey guys, remember when quake 3 came out that nobody cared about it and everybody went and bought UT and it became a sensation..
ill see you at UTcon 2017 next year :>, this year's con sure was fun
this is what ut fags actually believe
>cs was the cod of the 90s
>cs came out in 2000
w 3 w
lad
>a game that didnt come out in the 90s was the X of the 90s
next time try harder to not be so retarded
5
early 2000s = 90s to people who didn't actually experience it.
>tfw he actually believes cs was a 90s game
No map control, and no active defense of this map control, will fuck you at competitive level
wasn't ever true then, isn't true now. unreal had trash movement compared to quake
Good job outing yourselfs children, this is an 18+ board and I'd appreciate if all of you fucked off, or did you actually think cs 1.6 was the first counterstrike for some retarded reason?
>counter-strike
>90s
must have been my imagination when i was playing beta in 1999.
oh, right, you literally weren't born and have no idea about the true versions of counterstrike before bunnyhopping was removed
you think 1.6 is "old" cs when it's literally the worst and last version of it
wut?
>CoD is a shit csgo
what
>only the retail version of counter-strike exists
yes once again keep quiet since you have no idea what you're talking about
UT won 9 goty awards at release(UT GOTY), quake 3 won zero and there was a poll up last year for several months which game everyone prefers on /vr/ and spammed in Sup Forums which UT also won
Stay bootyblasted
ok kid
why do the children come out in the middle of the day... dont they have to go to school or something?
also, 1
>90s
>1999 beta
Found the underage. Playing something for 2 months at the end of a decade places it in the 2000s
Way more mods and delicious Assault mode.
calm down yugi, save your energy for the dank 5 im about to drop
>Found the underage.
yes you found the underage, unquestionably the oldest person in this thread who used to talk to gooseman on irc before you were born. hilarious.
we weren't discussing what decade it's "in", we were discussing when it came out. CS came out in the 90s. sorry KIDS.
>most of the guns are also in quake 3
>LOL THEY HAVE NO PURPOSE
play the game instead of talking out your ass millenial, you can play for free with nquake, there is no excuse for your retardation
>DURR WE'RE NEW AND PROUD!
>On March 24, 1999, Planet Half-Life opened its Counter-Strike section. Within two weeks, the site had received 10,000 hits. On June 19, 1999, the first public beta of Counter-Strike was released, followed by numerous further "beta" releases.
And that was just public beta, closed beta was out since 1998 and leaked like crazy, and frankly in 2000 NOBODY played 1.6 because it was shit, had shields, and cost money, well into 2002 everyone was still playing 1.5 exclusively.
Maybe if you weren't all fucking 12 you'd know this.
who true combat here?
i played so much of this shit as a kid, quake and go fuck a shit... the only good use for quake was as a base for true combat mod
people played cs since the betas, especially those from ut/q3
most people started jumping at 1.4 iirc.
obviously not everyone liked cs, but it's what people moved on to since it's "new"-ish in terms of gameplay. you can't play alone.
Wow, a poster on Sup Forums who actually knows something about QW and Q3A, color me surprised. Don't listen to those scrubs complaining.
nice samefag, you dont know shit about what you are claiming
Unreal Tournament appeals to scrubs who can't master movement, ignore map control, and are impressed you have to click twice to kill people.
I thought UT and Q3 were both great.
CS turned to shit after the beta. The models looked way worse (guns on the hips, wtf) and moved like wood dolls.
Also, they nerfed my gunfu.
>cs
>1990
*unsheaths katana*
*teleports behind you*
nothing personal kid
*performs the hikuragatake slice and seperates your head from your body in one clean swipe*
Always UT vs Q3. What about Unreal 1 vs Quake 2? I played both a 6 years ago and found Q2 repetive and boring, while Unreal had a lot of variety in the levels and weaponry.
While you can argue on the strategy part (depends is he talking about TDM or 1v1), do tell me what's wrong with those statements.
>1.4
meant beta 4.0 with de_dust
>UT became UT4
>Quake became Quake Champions
gee, I wonder who won
>preferred
>Q3 sold more
>Had more players online at the time despire UT being easier to pirate
>Most people online in UT were huehues
>Tournament scene didn't survive two years
Sure did prefer spastic movement simulator 99
>children on Sup Forums now don't know CS was a mod in the 90s
holy shit
>29 posters
Why is it that every time CS and Quake are brought up at the same time, you fall for the bait?
holy shit, this thread made it to reddit
we are going to be famous
it is wrong because he says quake 3 takes more strategy than quake 1. item control is even more important since armor doesn't stack, red armor will always be more effective than yellow for example, and the only ways to get ammo are through ammo packs, enemy bodies, and weapons of the same ammo type. a match on dm6 or skull will be a lot more tense than anything in quake 3 because it takes a lot of strategy and skill, with noise trickery, timing, good movement. it isn't like quake 3 or 2 where "oh lol i see an enemy i can just snipe him with my rail!" and anyone can hit 40 percent rail. lightning gun might be great at accomplishing something similar, you kids look at its damage output and think it completely outclasses the other weapons but you are wrong, you will rarely have enough ammo for the lightning gun to just use it whenever, it needs to count.
>someone was this desperate to look right
Fuck reddit is a shit site
>pleb reviewers give rewards to the game with less depth
>plebs from /vr/ and Sup Forums prefer UT
This just reinforces that UT is a game for scrubs.
>yiff
>sharktits
>gfur
fucking kill yourself
This.
Both games just scratch different itches.
get the fuck off my board you piece of shit
>UT movement is garbage
you're garbage
Q3 was a tech demo
I know the UnrealCon this year was so much better than the QuakeCon.
Of course the majority prefered UT.
The majority always like the better games.
youtube.com
>that awful fucking movement
>doesn't even travel the entire map
>complete lack of strategy
unreal tournament is complete shit and is only lauded by nostalgiafags who got carried in CTF
you know what this wasnt fun because of graphics it was fun coz of crazy speed and that awesome athmosphere.
something devs today seem to forget about when they just shine up a turd and call it a day when it´s an HD Turd nobody wants to play.
naw, both are
>Q3 sold more
spot the underage, q3 was a commercial flop at release because it was mplay only and required a strong gfx card, didnt manage to crack 1 mil+ sales said so by "carmack" himself.
that joke was already made earlier in the thread dumbass...
>The majority always like the better games.
he said as he was blasting justin beiber in his beats headphones sitting in his dxracer esports chair
I agree that he shouldn't have said that QW takes less strategy. The general idea of the post still stands (QW and Q3A are different), imo.
This, map control and denial made Q3 more strategical and defensive. QW was a all out slaughterhouse compared to the finesse of Q3
q3 sold like shit because people were too busy playing half-life and quake 1. not ut and not cs (which didnt exist at the time).
the single biggest reason why nobody bought quake 3 was because quake 1 and half-life both had bunny-hopping and strafe jumping while quake 3 did not
>playing an arena shooter with no bhop or strafe jump
even back then people realized it was a retarded decision, its the same reason why quake 2 was such a gigantic flop
the worst part was, unreal was even fucking worse than quake 3 in the movement department
Some of my favorite games run on the Quake 3 engine, but Q3 itself always felt a bit bare-bones for me.
sorry I don't take a discussion like this so seriously I have to read every single reply before I dare to participate.
>Quakecon started with Q3
Dude what
Quake 2 is fucking garbage. Quake 1 is still fucking great, though.
Same. Carmack made great engine but after Quake their games were pretty meh.
real UT is 2k3/4
For team play, unreal tournament.
For solo, quake
Any other answer is wrong. TDM and CTF sucked ass in quake, while the only mode in UT worth shit was CTF (and assault sometimes for fun)
People who like the movement in Q3 are retarded autists.
hunter best waifu
> mfw Sup Forums keeps getting comfy retro threads. First HoMM, now Q3A
WHat's going on here?
UT had more game modes. Q3A only had dm, tdm and ctf.
Romero had already left by RTCW, hence why it kinda sucked.
But then there was Enemy Territory, which was fucking awesome.
RtCW was not made by id
