are those men kissing each other?

If it counts, then Ys

It's hard to say. I like the dragon quest series a lot but there's a lot of individual games in different series that I also love.

Like Skies of Arcadia or the first two Suikoden games.

Game Arts and Working Designs stuff though... I didn't dig Grandia and the only reason I played some of Albert Odyssey was because of the fucked up translation. I just wanted to have some laughs but it required me to play the game which is boring.

I guess I also liked Golden Sun but it's been too fucking long.

Who /starocean/ here

Tales, almost exclusively for the combat systems and occasionally likeable character casts.

Fuck off you retarded fujoshi.

right here
last one I played was Last Hope though. I thought it was "okay".

>occasionally likable

were the key words.Symphonia and Vesperia had decent casts, and occasionally a bad cast has a decent character or two like Edna in ToZ.. but yeah, the twink fuccbois in most the games do kind of piss me off.

Chrono Trigger, Trails in The Sky, and Xenoblade Chronicles I've ever liked

I don't think there even is a series that I can pick out and say "I like this SERIES" the most

I mostly just pick and choose from a bunch and am indifferent to or dislike the majority of the games in any given series.

Tales is a good example. I played Symphonia, Abyss and Vesperia and have yet to enjoy another one since.

>tfw never got to finish chrono cross
It had a fucking outstanding OST too.

>Suikoden
>Legend of Heroes
>Xeno

SMT combatwise is probably the deepest JRPG

I'm looking for a series without turn based game play that has characters without traits / archetypes turned up to 11 (Like in Tales games).

Does it exist?

>tfw never got to finish chrono cross
Holy fuck, Masato Kato is posting on Sup Forums

Final Fantasy VI
Chrono Trigger
Nier
Valkyria Chronicles (pretty much)

You might like Xenoblade Chronicles.

>without turn based gameplay

3/4 of your suggestions just failed that.

FF Tactics/Vagrant Story/Ivalice-based shit gets my balls tingling with delight like nothing else, also love Tactics Ogre for similar reasons. Also love the shit out of Xenogears and Saga Frontier and finally Shining Force.
First entered the world of Ys recently, with 6 on PSP and 4 on Vita, have to say I'm not feeling it, the story is total balls and the MC is an insufferable cunt.

Suikoden. I have no idea how to represent the series, though.

VI and Chrono Trigger have ATB
Valkyria chronicles does have turns but I would argue that it strays far enough away that I wouldn't really define it as a typical "turn based game"

Dragon Quest

Lunar, if two games repeatedly being remade counts as a series.

>Final Fantasy VI
>Chrono Trigger
>Turn-Based

How about you actually play them first, retard?

You should add Neptunia with that pic of 2 fat neckbeards pretenting to be little girls online.
Somebody has it?

Mario

>Skies of Arcadia

Still a criminally overlooked game, even with improved re-released that was Legends. Such is fate of being released on Dreamcast and Gamecube, I guess.

SMT or EO

ATB is turn based stripped of the advantages of being full on turn based like FFX. ATB is shit.

ATB is still so close to turn based that I'd say it counts. It's still menus and turns just your turn isn't a pause in gameplay. You still have to wait for your turn to have the option to do anything though.

>Still no Front Mission

Fuck your gay ass thread.

the entirety of Disgaea and chrono trigger along with chrono cross the disgaea series is fun in its own ways while the two chrono games are amazing and would the Xenoblade series count?? and oh yeah Front mission is awesome

Etrian odyssey. Best thing Sup Forums introduced me to

I didn't even care about the porn.

You'll rarely hear it mentioned because most of the series was never translated, but Metal Max games. Probably second to Romancing SaGa in "what if JRPGs decided to go sandbox?" approach.

>playing ys for story

lol

>MC is an insufferable cunt
>Ys

Also you picked the two of the worst games to start with. Try the Oath in Felghana or Origin on PC.

>Ten days

SMT

I would say the Chrono series, but only the first one of them is actually good

Legend of heroes: trails in the sky

Golden Sun 1+2

Also really enjoyed hybrid heaven for what it was worth.

>all five core games are set in the same universe
>reference each other and build on top of it, but playing them all is in no way mandatory
>last game is a massive fan service game bringing four previous together and rewarding you if you followed the series

still kinda amazed it worked out AND without a single main entry being disastrous or even outright bad. and now there's a rumor squeenix is working on a new game.

>TotA
>Not the best cast
>Not loving the It's Always Sunny of RPG's

There has been a rumor of such for nearly a decade. I'll believe it when I see it and even then I'm not really sure I trust current-day squeenix to do it right. Do you?

Sauce on the last pic

You have to wait for guns to be reloaded in FPS. Guess that means they're turn-based games right?

Turn-based platformers are my favorite. You have to wait for your character to land before you can jump again.

Legitimately the best JRPG I've played. Chrono Trigger is a close second though.

My Front Mission niggas

That is some of the dumbest garbage I've ever read.

Chrono Trigger isn't that good.

Etrian Odyssey

nice strawman.

ATB games you cannot do ANYTHING until your character's turn comes up again. They can't move, they can't defend, they can't use items, nothing.

The closest comparison to any non turn based game that you could make is with an MMO like WoW or FFXIV that utilizes global cooldowns, and you make that global cooldown about 10s long instead of 1.5-2.5s long, and give enemies a GCD that long as well, and make it so that moving costs your global cooldown and you can't move while on GCD.

What that poster was asking for was action based combat systems or perhaps pause and play like systems.

ATB, is turn based but once your turn comes up you're expected to act quickly rather than doddle all day over what to do with your turn, that's all.

...

Speaking of EO, should I play the series from the beginning or jump into the latest one? I mean, it's not a story-heavy series or anything.

i prefer starting from the beginning
sequels tend to add improved features over past games in the series and if you get used to a great feature in the more recent games you soon find it's not there in the old ones and it can be frustrating.

If you really want to experience everything the series has to offer then you can start from the first one and play in release order.
If you just want the newer, more accessible 3DS titles then start from IV and play in release order from there.
The games introduce a ton of quality-of-life improvements with every entry so playing them backwards in release order will probably be frustrating.

Smt
Ten more days

the first one gets pretty dull towards the end, not sure how the remake is though.

First game was actually remade for the 3DS, but I'm not sure if they kept original balls busting difficulty compared to how latter installments shaped up.

If he wants an action game then he shouldn't be playing JRPGs. Every single one is turn based in one form or another.

>inb4 KH is a JRPG

3 >= 4 >= 2 Untold

This is as far as entry points go. 3's inarguably the best of the DS trilogy, and has enough QoL improvements to feel playable while still enabling you to enjoy the later entries. I dislike 4, but it's overall easy enough and short enough to be a breezy first entry. 2 Untold is by far the most polished entry in the series and has a decent level of difficulty throughout, but it makes it much more difficult to go back through the series once you've gotten used to the QoL shit in 2U.

Tales, Star Ocean, Seiken Densetsu, Ys, Xenoblade, none of those are turn based, and they're all JRPG's.

To add onto this, 1 and 2 have been remade with additional weebshit story modes and modern QoL improvements. There is literally no reason to play the original 1 and 2 unless you're a completionist.

You're waiting for actions, movements and cooldowns in all of those. They aren't turn based in a traditional sense like Final Fantasy or Final Fantasy IV.

To add to this

Difficulty is as follows:
3 > 2 > 1 > U2 > U1 > 4

While 3 is the best hands down, it will fuck your shit up without hesitation.

>3 the most difficult
top kek
It's the easiest of the DS trilogy and only led to 4 being even easier.
The hardest game is Untold 2 on Expert.

You have to play the game on Expert difficulty if you want the proper setting but Untold is easier than the original because the skills and stuff are actually useful now

I would say I had a harder time with 1 than 3 when I didn't spam Immunize, but otherwise I agree.

EO2U is the best in the series, EO4 has the coolest customization system, EO3 has some really cool stuff but has shit balancing and you can probably just wait for EO3U to come out eventually that will likely fix all the issues.

EO4 is the best place to start because it's easy and has a lot of nice QoL things over prior games, but playing EOU afterwards is going to be really painful.

Not even close.

Ys and Seiken Densetsu have 0 cooldowns on anything, they're pure action RPG's. Spells having a casting time isn't a cooldown or anything loosely related to a "turn"

Tales and Star Ocean only have a global cooldown on consumable items. Otherwise they are also pure action RPG's. You can move your character around in the play field at any time. There's a limitation in how many hits you can chain in a combo of each type of attack, but otherwise you're free to attack at will, free to defend at will as well.

Xenoblade is the closest to having anything related to a turn based system as it does make heavy use of cooldowns, as it has basically an MMO combat system, but movement is unrestricted.

Compare this with a traditional JRPG turn based or ATB system:

Characters cannot perform ANY action when its not their turn. When it's their turn they can perform a single (in most cases unless they have an affect that allows them to perform multiple actions in 1 turn or it's a system like Divinity: OS where they have an action point system that allows you to perform as many actions in a turn as you have points) action of any type the game allows for them. 1 attack, 1 spell, 1 position change, 1 item, etc. Characters are locked into position on the battlefield, the only movement they can perform is to generally change position within their party lines (from back row to front row or vice versa usually, though Chrono Trigger does not have this and has some sort of pre defined party positions on the screen for fights)

With the exception that all games have ways to bullshit everything, i thought 3 was somewhat harder than the other due to lacking some features like shortcuts everywhere, fast travel etc. 1 and 2 is in a league itself though

Any EO game (and arguably any turn-based JRPG in general) is easier if you abuse broken mechanics or skills.
Immunize made EO1 easy, Hexers made EO2 easy, and so on.
3 just has more broken shit than probably any other entry in the series thanks to subclassing. Anybody can figure out that Ninja + Zodiac = Free TP and start dropping nukes on everything.
The most broken "EO" game will always be PQ though. That game is downright silly in how easily broken it is.

I dropped PQ when i realized the abuse you can do with Naoto, it wasn't too fun to play on the hardest difficulty then

Traditional JRPG: Star Ocean 2
SRPG: Brigandine GE

>Le X is gay becuz its poplar

It doesn't even end there. If you slap Charge + Myriad Arrows on your front row then you can 3-turn literally every boss in the latter half of the game with ease. Even Zeus, the ultimate final boss went down in 3-4 turns when I fought him, and he didn't even get a chance to attack.

All jrpg's are shit.

>mfw EO3 Abyssal God with proper Warrior Might party
Good times

anyone played Radiant Historia here?
underrated game

nah m8, that's just you

Remember in EO2 landsharks could kill the extra boss in like two turns?

who is the best DQ girl?

Final Fantasy will always be my favorite. I find them all to be consistently enjoyable games up X or XII. I've also greatly enjoyed the Breath of Fire games.

Unfortunately I have never managed to break into Dragon Quest, despite the fact that I've always wanted to.

Other spectacular games I have had contact with but haven't touched the sequels or other games in the franchise include Legend of Legaia, Legend of the Dragoon, Legend of Mana, and Grandia I.

And of course, Chrono Trigger goes without saying.

I also love Cross.

What happens when Chrono Trigger and old school Fallout has this sweet, pure sex and breed a prodigy child?

One of the best non-linear, open world JRPGs

maribel a shit
SHIT

It's just a prank haha, they're doing it for laughs haha

Etrian Odyssey by far.

I used to have the preorder version of it, but it was stolen from me. Really fucking great game, though unit availability and balance was skewed.

The Heaven and Earth series is one of my all time favorites. RIP Quintet.

I've lived my entire life ignorant of everything Nipponese; i.e. I've never even seen a Chinese animation or played a Mongol game
Could anyone recommend me a good starting place?

Deborah.

Bleach is good. Go to you nearby supermarket, buy a jug of it, and chug it down.

NEW THREAD

Chrono Trigger. If you're afraid to appear childish or doesn't like the tone or aesthetics of it and wish it was more "western", Legend of the Dragoon.

Thanks user, I'll think of you when I lose my Taiwanese interactive animation virginity

Literally what the fuck nigga. At least put effort into a derail.

I'm playing trought Devil Survivor 2 for my first time ('I've already played DeSu,SJ,IV).
I now have to choose a route,so which route is better?
Anguished one or Yamato?

Do you have an image for PSO?

>two guys kissing

WTF am I looking at? That's disgusting.

>first two Suikoden games

Not 3 or 5?

I feel like, even if you include all 5 main games, the series still comes out on top of all others.
