It is also a hero class and there's at most only one guy running with that gun. In a group of 32 soldiers, you'll find a big guy.

LMGs* (08/15 is a light machine gun) has a much lower recoil because it fires a standard rifle bullet out of a very heavy gun. AT rifle fires a big ass bullet that had so much recoil it dislocated shoulders of the shooters.

Looking at the stats MG 08/15 weighed a couple of kilos more than the Mauser 1918 T-Gewehr but it's bullet (7.92×57mm Mauser) had almost 4 times less energy (almost 16000 J compared to around 4000 J) than the 13.2mm TuF that the AT rifle fired.

The theatre in africa was tiny in terms of troop numbers. It was basically entente invading german colonies with little resistance and some guerilla warfare from th germans afterwards.
