Toby Fox put up a retrospective on Undertale's popularity. He's also going to open asks on tumblr for people to ask questions to him about it.

Who cares? Not trying to be mean but he's some aspie who got lucky with a decent game

>tumblr
>q&a

Indie in name only, that's some hipster shit you jaunce.

>trying to demean others work because you probably cant preserve your fragile ego otherwise

If you consider the fact that a single person worked on it, its pretty damn impressive.
You must be a sad person

>tumblr
posting links to tumblr or reddit should be a permaban from Sup Forums that never, ever gets removed no matter how much you appeal it

do you believe in preserving the integrity of console wars too?

what did he mean by this?

>tumblr

I thought he was "our" guy

I assume he just doesn't want to see some shallow ass 'me-me' shit.

>tumblr

>Though it was released almost a year ago, I have the same opinion of it.

>It’s about an 8/10, niche RPG game.

>If you like the characters and the humor, you’ll probably like it, and forgive it for its flaws.

>If you don’t, you’ll probably hate it.

>Surprisingly, there are many people who like this type of game. Though I did work hard, there’s definitely a lot of luck involved in having a game become this popular. So, it wouldn’t surprise me if I never made a game as successful again. That’s fine with me though.

>Not only did I not expect this level of popularity, but initially, I was afraid of it. I didn’t want UNDERTALE to become tiring for people, or become spoiled before anyone even got a chance to play it. Early on (this was probably excessive) I even tried to contact certain Let’s Players to tell them not to make any content about it.

>But, the game became very popular. Unavoidable, even. At the height of its popularity, “not liking the game” felt like a cardinal sin to many fans online. In reaction to these circumstances, others began actively hate the game, creating an endless whirlwind of discourse…

People hate this man for some reason.

>Toby gives his game a score of 8/10
How is there not a shitstorm about this

Because you autismos can't handle clicking a link:

>Like a thunderclap to a small dog, all of this attention stressed me out. And every time it seemed to die down, something revived it, such as the GameFAQs contest, the award shows, bizarre theory videos, and so on. At times, I wished I had a way to quell the attention. I felt a strange powerlessness. (And guilt, for feeling stressed when the success of the game SHOULD be something I’m nothing but ecstatic about.)

It's quite possibly the best game of all time. He deserves worship.

>At the same time, countless wonderful things were happening. People told me the game helped them through a difficult part of their life. Others told me that the game had made them laugh, or cry, or say “I want to be kinder.” Many young kids told me they wanted to create games or music because of it. And, on a personal level, because of its popularity, I have been able to help myself and many people in my life. (And, hopefully, in the future, I can help many other people because of it, too.)

>So, ultimately, it’s a good thing that the game reached so many people, and I’m very, very, very, very, very, very, thankful to everyone that supported it, and everyone that helped me make it.

>Thank you.

>And thank you to anyone who has created fanworks for this game over the past year. I’ve been in fandoms my whole life. I drew Cave Story characters in the margins of my 7th grade history class notes. So it’s amazing to see something I created incite a similar passion in other people.

>Someday, UNDERTALE will fade from people’s minds. But, I’m sure in 10 years, some kid who played UNDERTALE will create a game that surpasses it…

>I look forward to playing that.

>Bark.

you know how I know you're from reddit? You think bans, even permabans, mean anything and arent easily sidestepped, you fucking mong, get out

toby pls go

Why is he using 9 point font is my only question.

>creator gives his own game an 8/10
BUT IT WAS VOTED THE BEST GAME EVER
DELETE THIS RIGHT NOW

>tumblr
>e-celeb
>Undertale

pls FUCK OFF

Who cares? He uses what he wants. Why are you autists so bothered about everything? "WAAAAH SJW MEME REEE"

This dude is so fucking full of himself, even less appealing then listening to sean over exaggerate about his expectations.

What more is there to ask at this point? It just seems pointless to have a Q and A

>on tumblr
Perfect place for this game and for OP.

>Gives it an 8/10
OH MY GOD SO HUMBLE
I see through your bullshit, toby

Seriously try an argument instead of getting this offended

>He's also going to open asks on tumblr for people to ask questions to him about it.
That's going to be a horrible, HORRIBLE mistake.

There will be at least a thousand faggots who feel like they're going to need to ask an important question because Undertale is such an important game that changed their lives

go and lay down for a bit bud, you're losing it

Because it's hard to read? Why are you getting so assblasted over me wishing he would use a regular-sized font?

Undertale wasn't exactly my cup of tea, but he seems to be a decent guy that is thankful for his success. I wonder if he is still doing undertale-related stuff or if he started working on a new game.

If you made a game maker game which sold over 2 million copies and garnered such a massive fan base I can bet your ass anyone reading this would have a tough time being humble about it.

Maybe you should leave.

You're just nitpicking, like every other member of the hatebase.

Except that I enjoyed the game?

Dust An Elysian Tail was also one guy and it's miles more impressive than this shit game

>someone asks whats your opinion on matpat giving the pope undertale

He's done with undertale. He's working on some new game.

Why would a creator not appreciate his work? Not to mention that the average rating for the game is way higher

he seems to be a pretty decent guy, unlike the majority of indie devs

>Quesadilla
What did he mean by this?

>STOP GIVING ME ATTENTION
>here is a place you can give me attention
Hi Toby, hugs and kys

Dust is designed and programmed by one guy, he also had artists, voice actors, sound and music guys

>single person
It took like, two years or so?

One guy made this in the same time: youtu.be/z5El-yYNUwU

all of the questions will be autistic stereotypical tumblrshit with very few sincere unique questions
the blog will close in a week

>I didn’t want UNDERTALE to become tiring for people
Then don't merchandise your creations you fucking hack

I remember when the link to the demo was posted here years ago, and all the talk associated with the genocide route and fapping over Toriel which came with it.

When the full game was released it far exceeded my expectations, and I'm glad to see it's popularity explode, despite all the tumblr shit it spawned. Good on him.

Using assets made by others
It's still pretty impressive, but doesn't look very polished at all.

I am not offended, i just stated a fact.

You can actually see how much work that guy put into it. I dont believe in non deterministic nonsense like luck.

He put a lot of work in it and thus it became a good product.

You seem the one who gets offended if others are successfull and calls them aspie and shit

You should read about this
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crab_mentality

Dodrill did the main game and art and only had people to do VA and Music, same could be said for Toby having artists do backgrounds and character designs

Something tells me this website and it's offerings don't have much to do with it's being tiring for some people.

fangamer.com/collections/undertale

Underrail is miles better. So was Age of Decadence.

I'm also glad. He might be a piece of shit, but at least he's also someone who develops decent games.

>DON'T MAKE MONEY, DUMB FUCK
lol

He never merchandised anything. Can you haters stop?

you think undertale became tiring for people because he sold plushes and T-shirts?

It was an okay game. I like the gameplay for interactive RPGs like this and Mario and Luigi.
I just wish it was harder, and that Genocide wasn't completely boring for the sake to prove a story point, that's just bad game design.

>Genocide wasn't completely boring
>I'M SO CONTRARIAN LUL
Go back to your mother's tit faggot.

>Q: Will you ever announce a DLC for UNDERTALE, or a patch with a bunch of new content?
>A: Please erase all of the dreams within your mind.

I don't understand why you would leave your game in an unfinished state. Fair enough with hard mode just being a joke, but what the fuck at least finish the dog fight and make doing the credits bullshit worth doing...

nothing about it was bad. why does the hatebase keep making claims without playing the game?

An artist who thinks his characters can make an artistic or morall statement while he uses them to sell t-shirts is a lunatic.

the fuck are you on about? it's clearly finished.

Genocide was completely boring*
Shit, thanks for pointing that out kind shitposting user. I need to proofread my shit.

How so

Because the social politics are presented as being negligible and unimportant despite very much being inserted into the general narrative. There is no acknowledgment by the creator that these elements are part of a specific political/national ideology. I don't mind liberal/leftist shit. But when crawl up like a wolf in sheeps clothing. I'm gonna hate. Fuck that dude.

someone doesn't understand how game development works.

did you know you can buy the exact software Toby used to make undertale for exactly one dollar right now? the reason toby made undertale and you didn't is not luck. it is because you don't have the tenacity to spend years on a game that lasts 2 hours. that's aside from the fact that the vast vast majority of people who DO have that tenacity aren't talented/learned enough and wind up with a shitty product that is COMPLETE, but not great or even good.

hell, lots of games with BETTER EXPOSURE did worse than undertale, think about that. a successful kickstarter and a homestuck association. that's it. hell, the homestuck game is going to sell much, much worse than undertale.

what for, the game's already a millenial phenomenom, he already got shitloads of cash, nothing really matters now and the only people that complain about it are the odds one out

Genocide route is shit. The game makes a gigantic song and dance out of how killing is bad, and then locks exclusive story info behind the "bad route".
>b-but you just don't get it!
I do, and I don't like it.

>it's a "can art be commercial" thread

Y>this post

*sigh*

Some will never learn. I guess they're eternally having a bad time.

>The game makes a gigantic song and dance out of how killing is bad
That's not the point of genocide
>I do
You really don't

but you decided that story info was more important than the lives and happiness of your friends. you murdered them all for story info. that's what the game is mad at you for.

THis fucker made 10 million dollars because of this shitty game. Don't believe a word of this retarded melodrama he is putting up.

He is happy as fuck with how it turned out

And this is how I know you didn't play the game.

Pretty progressive (you) user kun.

>*sigh*
>memes
You can do better than this.

explain user

I think the Sup Forums hate bandwagon effect blew more out of proportion with Undertale than any other game I've seen so far.
Most of Sup Forumss hatred for things is justified to an extent, but you can tell with Undertale, there was a legion of contrarion faggots who booted up the game HOPING it would be awful. Being that the game relies heavily on things like humorous dialogue and occasionally pulling your heartstrings, it's easy to dislike a game like Undertale if you are already biased against it.
>I went in with an open mind, I really did!
Bullshit.

I knew Sup Forums would turn on Undertale as soon as the rest of the internet got ahold of it, but not nearly to the extant that they did - to where you can't even discuss the game anymore, without people having to write up long, wordy defenses for it (like so), and the rest of Sup Forums just flinging shit.

tl;dr, Undertale is the avocado of video games. I hope that makes sense.

Well yeah that is actually how he feels, he was just uncomfortable with the attention at first

>shitty game

The only shitty thing here is you, shitlord.

Pretty sure pic related is one of the best synopses of why Undertale is hard to discuss on Sup Forums

this sub is so tsundere for toby

>you can tell with Undertale, there was a legion of contrarion faggots who booted up the game HOPING it would be awful.
Sums it up perfectly.

Sup Forums has lots of edgy contrarians who don't know how to have fun.

Avocado is delicious, more like a norwegian blood cake or mircrowavable pizza.

>these elements are part of a specific political/national ideology.

Why do people make posts like these? Why cant video games just be video games, not everything is part of some great culture war between the "Right" and the "Left".

The big secret for completing the credits without getting hit is not. It's heavily hinted both in-game and on twitter that he was going to patch it in. But then a few months after release, he completely switched around and changed the line in-game to make it sound like it was never going to happen and now today he confirmed there was never going to be a content patch.

Which means we're left with 3 "jokes" about unfinished/cut content:
Hard Mode - I'm ok with this one just being a joke, since it's at least hinted at in-game that it's unlikely not to be completed.
Dog Fight - Not ok with this for the reason above.
Gaster - Most people are accepting that this is just a joke about cut content. I'm kind of 50/50, but I think an out of game answer would be just as fine (like I dunno, maybe the comic that was promised in the kickstarter?)

I dunno, if I were in his shoes I personally just wouldn't feel right if I heavily hinted that a feature was going to be introduced, then never finish it. Especially when you had to complete a challenge just to find out about the potential for it. Then again, this prick still hasn't delivered the kickstarter promises a year after release...

That was a waste of time to read, kill yourself.

Look up Flimsii video. Basically it's a better version of what Spec Ops tried to do. It's not really about killing digital creatures, it's about how far player can push himself in order to say that he truly beat the game.

Your point?

>blood cake
no

>microwave pizza
people don't hate it because of sudden ubiquity as was the case with the period of time where the fresh food meme was adding avocado to everything.

Don't you see, user? Everything needs a point, an underlying motive. Otherwise how would we know whether to praise or condemn it?

Here's what I don't get.

>Many young kids told me they wanted to create games or music because of it.

So people motivated to create after playing a game is something everyone accepts and finds normal, but people motivated to hate and destroy aren't?

Either video games are capable of promoting violence AND creativity or you don't get to cherry pick what the fuck you're gonna trigger to the player, and whatever content you provide in the game doesn't even matter.

I also hate NMS but you have to draw the line somewhere.

>Either video games are capable of promoting violence AND creativity or you don't get to cherry pick what the fuck you're gonna trigger to the player, and whatever content you provide in the game doesn't even matter.
What did he mean by this non-sequitur?

Can't the point just be if you were entertained or had fun?

>>I went in with an open mind, I really did!
>Bullshit.
You're part of the problem.

My dawg, it's not feature creep or adding so much that completing it becomes impossible to do well. It was 1 more boss fight. A fight I have to imagine he already had ideas for. There's 0 excuse not to at least finish the kickstarter rewards, though.

Fun? It is just a buzzword.
If it is just "fun," then there would be no need for arguments, for derision. Everything must have a point to fill that need.

>Game preaches tolerance and happiness
>Kids love it and say "Wow, I want to make a game like this someday, it's fun!
>Game preaches violence and destruction
>Kids love it and say "Wow, I want to make a game like this someday, it's cool!"

Both can inspire creativity

>There's 0 excuse not to at least finish the kickstarter rewards, though.
I played the game without knowing about the kickstarter awards so maybe I was spared from that.

>Shitty furry fetish game
>Better than Undertale

I like fun when my beliefs aren't being ridiculed excessively.
