So now that it's been in the wild for about a day, just how censored is it?

the music is MIDI instead of orchestral

OH NOOOOooooooo

ah yeah I heard about that. kind of weird. especially since I think some tracks are still orchestral? or at least a few orchestral tracks are still on the cart

The opening which used to take hours is now like 30 minutes. And the music is synth. That's it. All the rest of the game has been retained, plus tons of new content added.

Niggas on reddit saying that the midi is easily changeable to the HQ versions instead.

Why would anyone do this?

The orchestral tracks used in the Japanese version of the game were incomplete loops. Yuji Horii decided to replace them with synth for the western release. We're actually getting the complete music while Japan got incomplete tracks.

Ostensibly, there were a lot of issues with the orchestral soundtrack in the JP release like really fucking awful looping, so they decided to use the old MIDI.

>The orchestral tracks used in the Japanese version of the game were incomplete loops

There is literally no proof of this, and it's just something people started spouting after hearing about the music change.

Show me one instance of this. You can't.

The JP .cia exists so you can just go look at it for yourself.

I've heard the music. Seen plenty of videos.

Not one instance of bad looping.

The only people who are saying this are folks on Sup Forums who are scared that if this game doesn't sell enough, Dragon Quest will die in the west.

Is the Synth really that bad compared to Orch?
I mean Orchestral is always good but sounds very generic unles it is really well done and has variety.

I never played a DQ before.

If I've never played a DQ game would this be a decent start? Are they not connected like the ff titles? Been looking for a good RPG to dig into lately, and make my 3ds more than a Monster Hunter machine

>I mean Orchestral is always good but sounds very generic unles it is really well done and has variety.

They are replacing real instruments with with synthesized ones. You're not getting a chiptune arrangement that completely alters the sound of the music. You're still going to be hearing a violin, just one is real, and the other is fake.

The western version is an inherent downgrade.

Oh, thats shit.
I'll try to change the music since I'll be pirating to see if I like the series.
Also, is it true that the loop is broken?
I think I prefer synt to unloopable music/ starts from the beginnig every time it is interrupted by a battle or whatever.

>Also, is it true that the loop is broken?

There is no proof of it being broken.

The came has been out for /three years/ in Japan, and the looping 'issue' has been something that's popped up on Sup Forums and places like it in the last month, by people trying to justify why they're getting gypped.

So I beat the japanese 3ds version and I just started playing
the USA version and there is a lot of different shit.
For some odd reason they removed the images
of weapons, armors, shields, items, etc. from
the shop menus. It might not be a massive
diff. but it sure triggers me

no fucking way

Didn't they say they had zero intentions of ever localizing it? I guess 90s era changes like that are inevitable.

Hold on ill post a pic from my game

Why the fuck would they do that.

I have it preordered but I want to play it now.
Can I use the EU .cia and then transfer the save to my legit cartridge later?

Assuming you're going to buy the EU version, yes with Big Blue Menu.

My jap version

My USA copy. Same shop as the jap
Version

what the fuck is this shit?

why?

I'm mad as salt

Oh that's fucking retarded.

That's not even censorship. That's just making the game worse.

wtf I hate Square Enix now

Why did they do that? Is it be cause of the lingerie equipment?

Why would they do this?

No fucking way, why the hell would they pull this shit on us?
Are they deliberately trying to make the game worse for the rest of the world?
WHY?!

honestly that would be my guess

i assume it is because there was little money involved with the localization crew and translating this maybe caused some errors displaying the images.
Still, this is a shit excuse and Squeenix can suck my dick.

purchase refunded

The icons are still visible in the item menu.

Are there any other menus where you could see the images or just in shops?

Purchase unrefunded

still thats no excuse for not showing up in the
shops

They changed the entire format for how menus are displayed though. That's not just a jumbled up error, that's a design choice.

A bad one.

fuck you, you aren't me
purchase ununrefunded

What are the differences?

in your inventory you can still see the items

i kek'd

>one is real, and the other is fake.
And why does this matter? What difference does it make whether something is real or fake?

that's all I've ever wanted

Look at the two images. They changed around the size, formatting, and placement of the boxes, along with their color scheme.

It's not major, but it's obviously a design choice.

It was probably necessary, they didn't intend for it to be in any other language when it was made.

Unpirated

this user gets it

One is cheaper and sound worse.

I'm a musician myself. Unless you're Hans Zimmer, and going for an approach with synths that real instruments can't rightly pull off, you're going to prefer a real one over a fake one.

If this is the type of localization we're going to get than I suddenly care a lot less about supporting them.

is this game worth sinking hours in to? I've never played a dragon quest before.

And that necessity resulted in them removing item images?

Judging from what that one user just posted, thankfully, the images are still there, just slightly more hidden, but this is a less convenient design choice.

I thought the color scheme was just something you changed in the options. Why keep the party's menu black though

Hope you have 100+ hours

For your first DQ game, no! Play 8 for a first
time DQ.

Orchestra music is seen as misogynistic by three people in the US, all of which work at NOA.

This would be an acceptable start; the numbered titles are not directly related. This title has somewhat different story progression than most other titles, but the core gameplay and world aesthetic is still present.

it was never meant for gaijin's to get their greasy weeaboo hands on so be thankful for anything

No, play DQV instead.

This is what happened when you pirates all the games. Get it now, piratefags?

No, play SMT4A instead.

Stuff like this gives me reason to pirate.

Buddy you got confused, i think you got two australian versions

is this a meme?

>And that necessity resulted in them removing item images?
If including the item images was more work than they cared to do behind the scenes due to the new interface for english regions, yep. I'm not saying they couldn't have gotten things working or maybe they could have compromised (had an option to show the item or something), I don't know enough about the game behind the scenes.

you just gave like 50 people a heart attack

were you the faggot who bitched about it previous thread? who cares

Well them choosing to do less work than they cared to do really gives me a reason to go out and buy their product.

I mean I'm not gonna buy it anyway due to the absurd music fiasco, but this is just an eye-rolling cherry on top.

>If including the item images was more work
I thought localization team needs as many work as possible for their paycheck? That's why they changing things that don't need to be changed like in Fire Emblem? Or at least that's what Sup Forums told me.

>were you the faggot who bitched about it previous thread?
nope, salty bro

Plenty of people if they keep talking about it.

The change in music is bad. Anyone who takes issue with it is completely justified.

ITT, fag anons who were never gonna play the game find really stupid reasons to not play this great game.

I'm gonna play the game though. Gonna pirate it and patch the right music in.

Get a better experience than anyone who buys it.

Like any other type of contracted work there is probably a fair amount of truth that. But Sup Forums said it so it's still 90% bullshit or a youtube person.

>not playing a game because music

sigh okay well im glad pirates will make it so this is the only localized version.

Some of the synth tracks genuinely sound better, IMO

But I am playing it, I pirated it yesterday.

Yep. Legit concern. The western version is an outright downgrade no matter how you slice it.

This game is coming out three years later than the Japanese release, with worse features, and I'm supposed t happily dole out 40 bucks for it?

You can hear it in this video here youtube.com/watch?v=FePJs7v_aGo at around the 0:54 second mark. You can also hear it in this video here youtube.com/watch?v=NPcKSTC6tiA at around 12:35.

Compare that to the PS1 version of the music which continues on after that and properly loops: youtube.com/watch?v=ia5NJ4_Lpbk at around 0:49 is where the previous two instances ends and obviously restarts the track.

The only way to know for sure if the US synths fixed it would be to have somebody upload the US OST, but given those videos, I'd say it shows that the loops or Jap tracks are at least incomplete.

no you're supposed to install cfw and pirate it like any 3ds game.

Listening to the orchestral version and the version on that video, I'm not seeing any jarring looping problems that would take me out of the game.

The synth version appears to extend about 10 seconds longer than the live version, but it just goes back to looping the same material again.

This is a non-issue that does not fucking warrant replacing an entire orchestral soundtrack.

Daily Reminder: Buy your NX from Japan

was the JP music orchestral?

>Listening to the orchestral version and the version on that video, I'm not seeing any jarring looping problems
Are you serious, m8?
The track literally restarts no loop. Or do you not know what a proper loop is? Because it's not just the song starting over.

Can i grab this off freeshop yet? The ftp app i have is slow as fuck and im too lazy to find my mini sd card adapter

Yes.

well that's just silly

Yes, the track restarts, but it restarts in a fashion that isn't out of place.

The synth version is just repeating the exact same material regardless, they just pointlessly included it in the soundtrack album to take up space and make you feel like you're getting more bang for your buck.

Yeah, all the music was redone with MIDI instruments for some reason. Its not the same as the PS1 either. It doesn't sound bad by any means but its just a strange choice considering most people would have preferred orchestral and it required significantly more effort to replace it.

To add on, I could only assume you are shitposting if you can't hear the track obviously end before restarting the intro to the song which shouldn't be included in a proper loop. It's obviously lazily done.

>but it restarts in a fashion that isn't out of place.
So you're actually deaf then?

That is pretty bad, guess I won't worry about it much. Too bad, what happened with the orchestrated version that it got chopped up anyway?

nah not on freeshop yet i checked.

Just use FBI for network installs. Should take like an hour if you use 2.0, around 20-30 minutes if you use FBI Chenfix

>song
meant to intro part

It was from a live recording that was done for a concert, IIRC, and the concert wasn't completely. Basically, they took the lazy route of chopping up already recorded music instead of recording a full new OST for the game.

yea what this guy said, this is basically a non issue. i'd rather hear that short intro again on repeats than hear much worse quality instruments.
>Because it's not just the song starting over.
that is exactly what a loop is. a loop is simply something that repeats over and over. in the orchestral version the intro is included as part of the loop, in the original version it's not. but it honestly sounds fine either way. the orchestral version is worth it.

what a shitty way to do it

Must have been the Fortune Street team's idea

holy fuck typos out the ass.
>meant to
meant to say

>completely
complete

>that is exactly what a loop is. a loop is simply something that repeats over and over
In the literal sense, yes, but it's not proper. You can clearly hear the track cut out before restarting. That is what is meant by an inproper loop. The intro is obviously out of place.

Yeah, you get a second of silence, then it opens up again on the tremolo strings intro. That is not particularly jarring.

It's a little unfortunate they cut out the interlude leading into the loop, but it's not a big deal.

The synth version is just restarting too. That's what looping is.
