Hey I'm playing this right now for the first time, just got to the haunted cathedral, gonna play that later tonight. I had a rally rough time with Guilds, holy fuck, but the Sword was really easy for me for some reason. Such a baller game, why did I wait so long to play this.
Because a lot of people working st looking glass studios at the time we're actual certified geniuses, a lot of them were recent graduates from one of the top universities nearby, and I'm talking the whole nine yards in humanities, not just stem.
Who was that laughing at me in there?
It's such a great game and the second game only gets better. Even when it drops the magic stuff it still manages to be spooktacular.
Such a shame that these two games are the only games that really get to the level of sheer mastery that they do, the third game is good but mediocre and the fourth game is a shitty attempt at recapturing the magic without really getting what made it work in the first place
>good but mediocre
don't many of them still work at what's left of (is it even still called that?) ion storm? you know, the bioshock guys ... I wonder why those games turned out so shitty then :( but fewer, brother, fewer ... youths in this time, seek to learn about gold and politics, not honest craft || it'll be their loss. when they come of age, they'll know not how to make art of consequence
The Metal Age is. It was the height of first person level design.
Its one of the most well-realized but not exactly the most well-designed game. It has a lot of fat that could be trimmed (more if you are playing thief gold; a couple of the missions it adds aren't really that good) and stuff like that which doesn't kill the experience but it does make it more tedious.
But the world and everything is definitely fully-realized and the core gameplay is, too
Maybe if the last quarter or so of the game was better
>mfw trying to ghost A Night in Rocksbourgh or Mission X
Yeah, I'm really looking forward to going through 2 as well. Plus I understand there's a bunch of community made missions that are quality for one of these two games, maybe both idk
EH
I am playing it for the first time too. Honestly, when the game is good, it's very good (Manor, Prison, Sword) but when it's bad it's fucking shit. Lost City was confusing for the sake of being confusing, getting the lever and then going back all the way... brrr. Thieves Guild had the same problem but amplified, who the fuck thought that was good level design.
Also the action/horror levels (bonehard and cathedral) are only nice to explore, but you don't use any of the game's main mechanics to get through them, and combat is bad.
>combat is bad.
that's the point
I'll admit, Guilds confused the fuck out of me. A lot of this comes from this being my first time through this game, I got twisted around and ended going to Donal's first and then went to Reuben's and then back to Donal's. It took me a long time and I knocked out 47 people. Not my finest hour, but next time it will go a lot smoother.
There's a fanmission list some user made.
Some of those are even better quality than the original missions, if you enjoyed T1/2 then you'll love those.
What point?
I don't have a problem with combat being bad if the game keeps it as a secondary mechanic, but in those levels it clearly isn't
You can usually run past the zombos
I can see why you'd say that, but personally I've never minded taking a break to explore for a while. I like to take in the rich atmosphere. The combat is clunky, but I like it because it makes you rely more on gadgets and movement than the sword itself.
Combat isn't necessary, even in the zombie levels (except maybe one objective in Return to the Cathedral, but even that's better done with a couple of flash bombs than actual combat).
Also worth nothing that Thieves' Guild wasn't in The Dark Project, it was only added in Thief Gold.
You can sneak past teh zombos, and you have to sneak past the spooky skelingtons. Seiously though theose skeletons are masterful spooks
Yeah, for all the good stuff Thief Gold adds, I would reccomend Dark Project over it simply becasue of that shitty thieves hideout mission
ctrl+alt+shift+end senpai
>you don't use any of the game's main mechanics to get through the spook levels
u wot m8
You can stealth past zombies, haunt, and burricks using the same light/dark and sound mechanics as the rest of the game, and you can sneak up and backstab them with the sword (especially useful for haunts) just like knocking out guards.
I dislike about half the missions in Thief 1 but you are stating wrong reasons.
>stealth games will never again be as good as Thief and Thief 2
But then you don't get the loot, I've played a lot of thief, so it's not a problem for me, but I can imagine it turns off a lot of new players, even worse than bonehoard, which is actually a really goo dmission
guys Dishonored 2 is coming soon and Harvey Smith is ganna blow us Thief fans away
Combat is actually quite fun if you can master it. Learning how to block enemy attacks is the most crucial (and hardest) part. But even then it's still very difficult to get out of a fight without taking some hits, as it should be because you're a thief and not a warrior.
I tried p^laying Thiaf couple of weeks ago, trying to keep my mind open... and still, expecting nothing out of t, I still managed to be incredibly disappointed.
For what few hours I played until I finally gave up, I thought it was *so* bad. I just don't understand the how/why of so many design decisions. It's like there was four cooks in the kitchen, and not one wanted to make the same thing as the others - let alone the original they were supposedly taking inspiration from.
>have 250+ hours in Thief 1 and 2 combined
>mfw I've barely scratched the surface of FMs
I wouldn't expect it. I loved Dishonored - and I expect the sequel to be good, but it's more walking into Deus Ex's footsteps than Thief's really.
Not even close.
yea but it has smooth stealth action with a high skill ceiling. sure its not thief but its atleast a stealth sword fighting game
It had its moments, but as a whole it was meh. the one moment would be the robbing the cradle mission.

Think thief 1 zombie/willow wisp level scary.
I really appreciate the maps in this game. I like how little they tell you and how it make sense within the context of the world. It's not like a lot of other map systems in games with a cursor or a fog of war that disappears as you explore. It's a fucking piece of paper you got from some drunk or you made yourself from casing the target. Things like this make a game that much more immersive.
what an amazing game. It is such a masterpiece,
i'm sad there will never be a stealth game like it
Get on it, you're in for some proper taffing once you start the good stuff like Circle of Stone and Shadow, Calendra, Black Frog, Rocksbourgh, etc
Unless it has shadows and proper footstep volume while crouched, it's going to feel watered down as fuck like before.
>mfw The Sword map
I played the first mission of Rocksbourg and part of the second, but didn't care for all the key/pixel-hunting.
Calendra's Cistern was rad as fuck but I think some of the scripting broke toward the end. The cityscape at the beginning was fantastic.
...
>all those question marks
it makes me feel a little trepidation and I love it
>Where am I?
>Maw of Chaos
> Your map is just a bunch of glyphs and occult drawings on parchment that somehow resemble the layout of the elemental zones
I'm tempted to save this but I don't want to ruin it when I get there
...
...
I'm fuzzy on the whole do not play at night thing
If you play it during the day to turn it into the darkest night, then presumably there's a terrible consequence for trying to make night any darker than it is.

Those missions are fucking ridiculous holy shit
Thief is great. It has aged extremely well.
Played it for the first time in 2013 with only TFix and gameplay was tight and story was amazing.
The Metal Age is not as good as TDP/Gold imo. It started out with promise (docks/that party mansion etc) but the game takes a steep decline in fun once the mechanist/mechanical enemies are introduced. Also the story in TMA wasn't as well crafted as Gold. You know that mission early on where you first encounter that android enemy, which seems to be a mix between a human and machine? They never even expanded on that in the whole game. The player is left to assume that they were turning humans into machines though it was never explained.
Most well designed STEALTH GAME, yes.
Either you didn't finish the game or you missed a whole lot of context clues and secrets
I'm only part way into the first game and I can't get over how good the footsteps coming from guards are in this game. People were not bullshitting when they said you can tell the direction someone is headed in this game by their footsteps alone. Tons of games have something like this but it's done so well here.
personally I refuse to give up hope like that :(
it's totally unrealistic, though!
yep, it is totally awesome. and unrealistic too, though. thief is proof how realism in games should always be subordinated to gameplay
Do tell me a better one then, oh enlightened one.
what do mean, like the footsteps are too loud?
>tfw so few stealth-based porn games
I can think of one, and I feel like there's another.
>He hasn't played T2X
Holy shit, contain your autism.
And no, objectively Thief 2's level's are designed a hell of a lot better than T1's. They're huge and complex, but not too confusing like something like Thieve's Guild.
you mean you can tell direction because the footsteps get quieter as they get further away?
Yeah, I'm able to judge where they are and where they are heading very easily just by the sound of their footsteps. A lot of games attempt something like this but the clarity here is much better.
I just finished Thief 2, and I've had enough of Mechanists for the moment. Their clanking is incredibly loud and unpleasant.
Which one is that?
A Winter's Night.
>not one, but TWO badly-designed city streets missions
>oh, it's the Maw, AGAIN
>oh, it's the lost city, AGAIN
>oh, it's THE SAME FUCKING LEVEL TWICE IN A ROW
TMA's gaffes were worse and more numerous than TDP's. The only TDP mission which is not at the very least good is Strange Bedfellows. TMA, on the other hand, had Trailing the Courier, Ambush!, Kidnap and Masks.
I think it's better than Thief 2 overall. More consistent in quality even though T2 has some GOAT missions.
I agree completely. Thief 2's start had me enthralled but it quickly waned when it became apparent they ran out of time. Too bad they went under before finishing Thief 2 Gold.
But even that can't help the atrocious missions like you mentioned.
I liked Thief 2 more, but damn you're right about the mechanist part. I mean the levels that included them weren't horrible except for the last map, 'Sabotage at Soulforge'. To me it just gets boring with all those open rooms.
You can also stand near or lean into doors to hear through them. It's pretty neat.
I think Gold would've at least helped with the pacing. They planned to put an undead mission between Casing the Joint and Masks- it's unbelievable that they thought having the same mission twice in a row was a good idea. And to have Garrett scope out a mansion in advance before making his move- something he never does anywhere else in the series.
Personally I liked the Maw. It was completely different than the first game and a much needed spooky enviroment. Casing the Joint is the only map I dislike. Shipping, the Bank, and Life of the Party more than make up for other low points.
What do you guys think of Styx? Was it enough to sate your Thief-esque stealth hunger?
I could only last 2 levels before I quit it, and I rarely quit games. It wasn't bad, it just felt amazingly cumbersome for some reason.
Honestly, Dishonored is the closest thing to Thief for me in the last generation. I'm more into these games for the level design rather than the stealth, and Dishonored is pretty much the only game in the last gen that even attempted to go for Thief-like level design.
Best sound of the game?
Who am I kidding, it's obviously the Horn of Quintus.
No, while it's excellent in a lot of places it can feel a bit clunky in some places.
eating crunchy food
>mfw Sabotage at the Soulforge on Expert
I only felt like a "thief" in the early levels before I figured out that I can just knock enemies out and stuff them in a corner. After that the game became the same basic pattern. Run through and KO all enemies on the level, then search everything to find loot without fear of being spotted.
By the end of the game stealth doesn't matter at all. You're a fucking heroic badass with a magic sword and flaming arrows. You sprint straight into the fray at full speed and run your sword through your enemies hearts.
Sure, you could use stealth, but it's by the end of the game it's simply faster to just run in and murder enemies.
>Sup Forums tryhard newfaggus mccomelate reply no. 4.27e22 ads nothing in support of Sup Forums being in any way better than reddit. At this point, even stumbleupon is better than this summer recess of a world wide website.
Loot bling.
No
Picking a lock and unlocking it.
Good grief no, Hard was enough of a slog in itself. I gave up on stelath in the end and just jumped around everywhere.

Nice one. That level has you incognito in the streets, and the lady with the letter wasn't hostile. They let you get away with shit until you provoke them enough.
HEY
I'M GOING TO THE BEARS PITS TOMORROW
D'YA WANNA COME WITH?
Victoria. It's in the sound files as well named "viktoria" i think.
Those were examples of levels that weren't good, user.
>and the lady with the letter wasn't hostile
That is completely fucking wrong. Replay the level. I can even make a webm showing you Mosley is hostile
spooky...
