SMT is a type of epic. It has as much social elements as a final fantasy/dragon quest type game.
The only demon that was hard to impress was Mermaid. Then again, it would be hard to recruit demons with Dagda right behind your back.

No, it can function as a standalone, but it really helps. Certain plot elements stem from smt iv as well as certain characters. Depending on how far you've gotten in smt4 you will understand more/less

Tokyo has been fixed. It's easier to get from Point A to Point B, thanks to Hunters building bridges and Terminals being used.
It's Dub, be warned that Navarre and Nozomi sound different.
