Mobile gaming has largely crippled the traditional console/handheld market in Japan, so publishers, particularly of quite niche shit, are having to explore every possible avenue to keep the wolves from the door, whereas they didn't need to bother even 5 years ago. They've realised that there's a market of aspies like pic-related who'll buy any old garbage that just happens to have an anime aesthetic.

So basically, it's easy money if they didn't agree to some kind of exclusivity deal with Sony, but also quite necessary a lot of the time.

As a weeb that doesn't really like most of the consoles this generation I'm really glad that certain kinds of games are finally turning up on steam.

Can't speak for those, but Xseed's stated that Trails in the Sky FC sold around 5,000 copies during its original PSP release. The same game sold nearly 200,000 copies on PC according to Steamspy.

The second game sold substantially less for a number of reasons, but given the alternative of a PSP game in 2015 it's still not hard to imagine it did better even then.

Considering the only people who'd buy SC are those that have finished FC, a 60 hour JRPG, those numbers are actually pretty damn good. 10% finished the game, that's a better completion rate than most games.

Not really. You need to understand a lot of people bought the first one just to see what it's like, realized it's not for them and called it a day. Unless you're spending millions on marketing or radically overhauling the sequel to get new audience this is generally how it goes. Compare Grimrock 1 and 2 sales, for example.

The original PC version, with the additional PSP content (like two bonus characters in SC) backported.

The original version is usually seen in a more positive light than the Evolution versions anyway, unless you really need voice acting. Which they'd probably dub over anyway, defeating the entire point.

They're sequels of a sort that take place two years later in Erebonia, a country that borders Liberl to the north. They share continuity but there are only a handful of recurring characters.

They're usually considered a bit worse than the Sky games, mostly in terms of a lower difficulty and a worse cast, but they're still pretty okay overall as long as the first Cold Steel game having a school setting isn't a dealbreaker.
