I'll try to make this more clear.
When Ventus' heart was fractured after Xehanort split it, Sora mended it. They now share hearts. Since they share hearts, their nobodies and other halves look alike. There's no useful significance to this, it's just a design choice.

Some say that's why Sora can use a Keyblade. (But I'd rather believe he is the chosen one)

Roxas IS Ventus. Roxas has Ventus' heart in him, and always did have it. He just doesn't have his own memories.

Having the hero be a random kid who just lucked out with who he knew rather than fate picking him is more interesting imo

That was probably in relation to Sora, not Ventus. The whole "I'm not Sora/I'm not Roxas" fiasco is most likely what he was talking about.

I'd like to propose a different theory.

Ventus originally had nothing to do with Roxas. The developers just reused his character model from KH2 to save time. They wrote an explanation for this into the story after the fact.

I almost forgot Roxas was Sora's nobody. It all makes 100% sense now.
