Why is this game so fucking hard? I was told to start Pokemon with the first games but I can't fucking beat the first gym. I have a full team of 6 Pokemon at around level 5-12, but nothing is effective against Brock's Pokemon. I can get Onix to half health and that's it.
Are all Pokemon games this difficult? Should I just give up on this franchise?
Isaac Baker
I didn't realize how to save at first and trained a pidgey to lv. 18 in the first area because pikachu couldn't do the job.
>tfw I did this multiple times before I learned how to save
Get a fucking Mankey, scrub. They're to the left of where you learned how to catch PkMn from the old man.
Easton Thompson
In yellow, only Gym one is actually hard because you're outmatched by type, it gets much more manageable as the game goes on.
Most RPGs are harder at the start because of being low level. Just power though Brock by grinding and you'll be fine OP, I believe in you.
alternatively, You could start playing Red or Blue. I feel those are better starting points because you can choose your starting Pokémon.
Michael Collins
You need some Mankey or Nidoran in your life, OP.
Christian Nguyen
How does it feel to actually be dumber then a 9 year old.
The smart way to beat brock is to catch a Mankey or Nidoran in veridian city they both learn fighting moves early and or use butterfree with confusion which hits neutrally.
There's also the patented what everyone did when they were a kid brute force strat where you spam sand attack till they can't hit anything then tailwhip and tackle it to death with pikachu and rattatas.
Also play the remakes of any game that has one; improved graphics, improved battle system and better balancing.
G1 was a mess.
Colton Ramirez
I beat Yellow when I was 8 years old dude
Carter Perry
Yellow is hard because you don't get a choice of starter, so you're stuck with a weak ass electric type for the first (Rock) gym. Same reason Charmander was the most difficult starter in RB.
But the older Pokemon gens were also just straight up more difficult than the more recent ones in general. Your mons level much more slowly, you start out with a bunch of type disadvantages, enemies do way the fuck more damage than in newer ones, and status changes are actually hugely detrimental.
With the exception of having to grind xp so much, I really wish the newer ones would bring back the difficulty of the early gens. It was much more rewarding.
Angel Scott
>can't beat the first gym in pokemon
Literally just grind
Nathaniel Reyes
Get Mankey like said. He carries you through the first gym.
Adam Diaz
Get a butterfree senpai
Carter Green
>he thinks pokemon is hard KEK Yellow is hardER than modern games due to many QoL additions in later games but it's not hard by any means at all
Jonathan Rogers
I replayed Red recently and it was laughably easy. the hardest part was shit like item management and dealing with the terrible movelists for each pokemon.
Matthew Wood
>I share a board with these people
Luis Richardson
This.
Just level a ratatta up to 20 and evolve to raticate. Although he won't be good against rock types, just over level him as much as you can.
Pidgey is bad because it's weak against rock, pikachu is bad for obvious reasons, electric gets raped by rock and ground.
Gabriel Cox
>Sup Forums is this gullible
Levi Sullivan
>WHY CAN'T METROID CRAWL?
Benjamin Adams
Probably bait, but the games are unironically harder IF you try to train a balanced team and switch out for newer Pokemon. If you don't you'll pretty much steamroll after Misty.
Oliver Morgan
"Gamers" today everyone
Michael Scott
>pokemon games >hard
If you think grinding is difficult then maybe
Hudson Butler
Doesn't Brock not even have any fucking rock attacks on his pokemon? You should be able to stomp his shit with anything that's not physical attacks at any level. Get your ass a Butterfree.
Ryder Long
>doesnt remember onix >doesnt remember the jobbers having geodudes
Julian Edwards
So this is why the RB miiverse is so retarded Perchance are you the guy who made FE10 unwinnable because he was so shit at games?
Tyler Collins
>yellow >hard
HAHAHAHHAHAHAH
Matthew Collins
Yeah and? Use literally ANYTHING that's not a Normal type attack on them. Geodude and Onyx have fucking garbage Special stats, even Ember takes them out in 1-2 hits if you started with Charmander in Red/Blue
Aaron Cook
Because it wasn't made for limp dick pansy ass whiny faggot kids like you. Beat that shit when i was fucking 8 years old. Grow a dick.
Michael Foster
Don't subject yourself to gen one. Play fire red or leafgreen first.
Jordan Thompson
I think you just suck at video games, OP
Jaxon Taylor
>In yellow, only Gym one is actually hard because you're outmatched by type Get a fucking Mankey in Viridian to level 8 and Low Kick his shit into the grave. Yellow is a fucking cake walk.
Nathan Brooks
Dude, that's TOO much grinding for an area with such little EXP. Just get 6 pokemen to around lvl 10 and it doesn't matter how ineffective their attacks are against all of Brocks TWO pokes.
Isaiah Hill
>I was told to start Pokemon with the first games Why the fuck would you even do that.
Evan Gomez
Hello my 6 year old self. Go find a mankey west of viridian city. Have fun in first grade faggot.
Jeremiah Ramirez
There are three ways of doing that in Pokemon Yellow.
The easiest (and likely intended) way is to pick up a Mankey in Route 22. This is just to the west of Viridian City, in that small offshoot where you can run into your rival for the second time. It learns Low Kick as Lv.9 to punch straight through his pokemon.
The second option is to use Pidgey's Sand Attack 6x times to reduce Brock's accuracy, then Tail Whip 6x times, then just break through them with standard attacks. It's slow, but it will get the job done. Brock doesn't have any Rock-type attacks in Yellow, so there is no immediate danger to your Pidgey.
The third option is to level the fuck out of a Caterpie, into a Metapod and then into a Butterfree. Butterfree learns Confusion as soon as it hits Lv.10 in Yellow, which isn't resisted by Rock-types and will chew straight through Brock's pokemon thanks to it being a Special attack. As a bonus, leveling the Butterfree up to LV.15 for Sleep Powder will make it a great Abra-catcher.
Benjamin Williams
Also, you can box items so you don't have to use all your TM's on pikachu to free up space, and higher levels means your moves do more damage and you take less damage.
Isaac Martinez
not him but they are perfectly fine starting places
FireRed is probably better though.
Leo James
Do it the manly way and train a caterpie into a butterfree. I think it evolves around level 14 or 15 then you have a good pokemon to get you through the tunnel as well.
Liam Roberts
Play Gen 1 and Gen 2 if you really feel like you need to start from the beginning to get context. The remakes are both better.
Tyler Wright
Get a nidoran male and level it until you get double kick you dumb fuck.
Yes I know I'm taking the bait.
Jordan Baker
Jesus, you made me remember gen 1 had max items you could carry. For what purpose? I'll never forget this one either, Bind locks you out of attack for the entire duration
Hunter Peterson
>tfw you always start Squirtle
John Gray
Wrap, Clamp, and Fire Spin prevented the opponent from attacking or doing anything. The easiest way to catch something was to just Wrap it with something faster, since the Wrap would hit first and prevent them from attacking.
The last round of Wrap/Clamp/Fire Spin, along with the round that a pokemon woke up from sleep, was announced but that pokemon wouldn't do anything. So you could just try Wrap or putting it back to sleep immediately. Gengar was quite silly for that.
Ryder Brown
>For what purpose? Memory limits on the Game Boy, most likely.
I've started with Bulbasaur occasionally just to give DICKS an Exeggutor rather than a Venusaur, to make it slightly more challenging for my psychic teams. I've also played through with Charmander once, just to see how challenging it it.
Hint: Charmander and Ember through Brock's team with little problem. You'll want something (probably a Paras) to deal with Misty, though.
Other than that, I would typically pick up Squirtle. Those guys are just too cute to pass up.
Jaxon Perez
>playing gens 1 or 2 when FRLG and HGSS exist
Jace Evans
Memory limits It's how Missingno can give you x99 of an item in your 6th inventory slot or whatever the glitch was, it all has to do with memory overflows
Adrian Myers
>started blue >picked charmander >3 critical hits on blue squirtle >almost every hit on wild pokémon were critical hits too
FRLG is better than this.
Justin Gutierrez
I did it by catching a nidoran, OP. > tfw afterwards I caught a dugtrio which lasted the whole game until e4
Nathan Anderson
But you could store the items on the pc, why not on the character? I guess they wanted both things (storing and keeping) and had to limit one of them?
Carter Perry
Crit used to be tied to speed I think
Carson Phillips
>Get a fucking Mankey
I remember doing this thanks for the nostalgia. I loved that mankey and I wanted to get all fighting pokemon and become a fighting gym leader after that.
Ethan White
The only thing harder about the older games are the pokemon movesets being laughably shitty due to fewer moves and Physical/Special being type-based.
Camden Nelson
Have they removed the pointless IV system yet? EV's are fine but IV's are just a tedious piece of shit to breed.
Levi Cooper
You can boost a pokemon's IVs with "Super Training" now apparently
James Gutierrez
No, but they're apparently making it so you can boost IVs in the ones coming out next month. Super Training is from Gen6 and is an alternate method of EV training (and also a means to reset EVs if you want). The IV upping thing is going to be called Hyper Training because stupid names.
Joshua Walker
Sad thing is I actually seen some who first played Yellow on the 3DS who can't get past Brock.
It's the saddest thing ever when I think what age I was when I first beat it.
Hudson Scott
>Nidoran learns double kick which is SE >Butterfree learns Confusion which is good against him and he doesn't know any rock type moves
There's two pokemon you need at like level 10-11 to fuck him up. Easiest fight in the game.
Ryder Reyes
>a pokemon game is hard you must have some serious mental issues
Ryder Jenkins
literally all you need to defeat brock in yellow is a lvl 10 butterfree with confusion
Charles Robinson
>not getting Nidoran with double kick >not whiping the floor of the gym with it >not getting Nidorino immediately after it >not having Nidoking at Mt. Moon Are you retarded or just pretty bad?
Dominic White
The pc even had a storage limit to its most likely techincal issues.
Jaxon Ward
funny enough pikachu doesn't get raped by rock. rock is neutral to ground, but almost every rock type in the game that you encounter is part ground, if I recall correctly only the fossil pokemon are part rock and not ground.
So because you think geodude, who is a rock monster, is immune to lightning, all rock types are.
James Clark
Get Butterfree, it learns a Psychic move just after evolving at level 10, also Makey
That's it
Robert Torres
>think rock-types are immune to electric >get Omastar >"Oh man, this is awesome, a water-type immune to electric!" >throw it up against an electric-type >It's Super Effective! >"Whaaa??" It shocked the heck out of me to find that out.
Jacob Ortiz
>all of these fucking plebs In my day we only used Pikachu and we liked it. The only reason we caught other pokemon was for HM moves. Take Pikachu, grind your balls off to Level 16, and spam Quick Attack like a fucking boss.
Evan Campbell
>Probably bait, but the games are unironically harder IF you try to train a balanced team and switch out for newer Pokemon. this i've personally they're also much more enjoyable as soon as you get rid of your op as fuck starter
Camden Evans
Except leveling a metapod is annoying so getting a mankey is way easier.
I can't remember but I think mankey would rage and not listen to you though.
Luis Powell
>Except leveling a metapod is annoying >for literally 3 single-digit levels Are you braindead and capturing Metapods without tackle over Caterpies or are you just that autistic?
Dylan Peterson
Anyone here hack their 3DS and play BW2 on hard difficulty? Shits fun yo. I just deleted my game and starting over again.
Alexander Morgan
1) Catch Caterpie 2) Evolve into Metapod 3) Be amazed as you now have a Metapod with Tackle Please tell me you're just pretending to be this retarded
Wait, can the 3DS run DS games off the SD card yet?
Isaiah Rodriguez
About time. All IVs did was make it so you had to spend several days worth of time mass breeding to have a competetive team, boosting IVs makes online play more approachable.
Robert Ward
People are still taking the bait? 50 replies of different people all saying the exact same fucking thing.
Henry Rogers
well what do you want people to say "fuck that Onix right in its stony butthole" ?
fucking grind that shit nigger
Jacob Taylor
No, you need a flashcart. Which work even if your 3DS isn't hacked. The way to get them feels a little sketchy though, you have to pay through paypal and not through a site. So you complete your cart and it says "Go to paypal and give money to this person". I was watching my email for a confirmation like a hawk.
Easton Davis
>Wait, can the 3DS run DS games off the SD card yet?
I think it can but I actually own Black 2 and just edited the save so that the hard mode was unlocked. All trainers have extra mons and levels, same with gym owners. normally it was only available after the elite four but you can hack it in.
Isaiah Collins
You need to set off the sprinkler system in Brock's gym to win that fight
:^)))))))))))))
Charles Kelly
The gyms start out hard, but get easier when you are able to catch more types of Pokemon. Stick with it, the game gets better.
Charles Walker
The original 1st and 2nd generations are better than the remakes. Stop being a faggot.
David Watson
You should stay true to the anime and overtrain pikachu until he can beat onix single handedly.
Ethan Cooper
Any good Hidden Object games? Looking to get my mom something. She loves those games and gem matching shit.
