Order of Ecclesia was my first Castlevania, and I love it. After playing Aria of Sorrow, I came to appreciate how the Glyph system worked. And while Julius is the superior character, playing as Albus is a fucking blast.
If we're talking pre-metroidvania, definitely Castlevania IV.
Post-metroidvania though, Symphony of The Night.
And as for worst ones? Probably the shit console port of Dracula X
>shit console port of Dracula X
what?
Most are good, Castlevania 2 was bad.
Loved Rondo, and the first will always have a special place in my heart. SotN is well praised for a reason, DS games were p gud too.
Been playing Castlevania HD a bit recently as well for nostalgia sake, been fun.
>console
Compared to what?
>Castlevania 2 was bad
Last time I checked Simon's Quest was considered the best of the original trilogy.
I dont like the metroidvania games.
I like Rondo and III the most; I think 2 is garbage and just don't get the love some people have for IV/super.
Then you have horrible taste, go back and play it again and see how terrible it is.
Rondo of Blood is the best I think.
bloodlines is great. eric is my nigga
There was a PC version that was only available in Japan until it was ported to the PSP
And the version that was made for the consoles at the time didn't feature most of the changes brought to the gameplay and also lacked a lot of other content which made the game so enjoyable
Tried CV64 once, hated it, always avoided the 3D games ever since
Any of the PS2 games good?
Other than the few dumb obscure things you had to do in that game, me and my friends loved it as kids, back in the day. We thought the focus on exploration was fun, although the lack of boss fights felt rather weak.
The PC Engine IS a console bud
Nigga what, PC Engine is a console, not a PC, and everybody knows about Rondo of Blood.
None of them are great but Lament of innocence was decent.
I thought the same until I did a runthrough of them a year or so back, 2 aged horribly. 3 wasn't great either though to be fair. First game still holds up.
you're confusing X68000 with turbografx/PCE
Then I must have mixed my shit up,
pls dont bully
>There was a PC version that was only available in Japan
What the fuck are you talking about.
PC Engine is a console made by NEC, not a PC.
Rondo is my favorite Classicvania
Aria is my favorite Metroidvania
Curse of Darkness is dramatically underrated
Holy shit are you me? Fine taste.
i like aria of sorrow
What's the opinion of Serio's Castlevania Fighter? It looks pretty good.
I'm not saying 2 is not without flaws, or that I even have any illusions that it's great, but I think it gets some concentrated hate when it actually did do some things quite interestingly, even if the execution wasn't always the best. In some ways it was more influential to the seris than Castlevania 1 & 3 since it's pretty much a prototype for SotN which is the blueprint for the series now.
And I agree with you on 1 & 3. Castlevania 1 is the best of the NES games.
>made by NEC
If you want to be more specific it was codeveloped by both NEC and Hudson Soft.
I don't even know what is that.
youtube.com
Apparently it's made off the Mugen engine. It even has Sayuka as a playable character.
guess I'll ask here, how do I get better endings in sotn? I just killed dracula and it ended. should I just look up a walkthrough like some kinda faggot? Should I play the saturn version to get the other characters right off the bat?
They're not outstanding but fairly decent. Curse of Darkness is a guilty pleasure of mine, and I would maintain that it's a hot contender for best overall soundtrack in the entire series.
So it's basically a boss rush game that you can play with a bunch of different characters from the Castlevania series? Sounds neat.
Castlevania Adventure ReBirth is really underrated. That game was so amazing.
Had a really fun time with I and III despite the difficulty busting my balls. Is SotN the best Metroidkino to get started with?
>only available on Wii
Yeah no shit people didn't play it.
Stealing this format.
Chronicles is my favorite Classicvania
Portrait is my favorite Metroidvania
Rebirth is sorely under-noticed
the original CV games are bad and were bad in their time and people from Sup Forums pretend to like them to get cool gaymer points.
SOTN is one of the best video games of all time and is the best of all the adventurey ones.
Best Classicvania: 3, with a nod to Rondo
Worst Classicvania: Probably 2, but it's not a bad game
Best Igavania: Symphony of the Night, again with a nod to Aria of Sorrow
Worst Igavania: Harmony of Dissonance
Best 3Dvania: Lament of Innocence
Worst 3Dvania: Castlevania 64
Personal Favorite: Symphony of Night
>Is SotN the best Metroidkino to get started with?
Aria of Sorrow is better imo, and if you count Metroid games aswell both Super Metroid and Metroid Zero Mission are better to start with. But I guess SotN is an ok start too.
Sup Forums thinks you're a fucking faggot lmfao
Nigger lover
No start with SOTN. It doesn't make any sense to start with a game with inferior ass resolution graphics sound and lacking all the touches that made SOTN SOTN
SOTN is about all the little things not "lol ebin more weapon attacks"
>Is SotN the best Metroidkino to get started with?
Every other Metroidvania is basically just SotN but with a gimmick and less variety. I don't even mean that in a negative sense since sometimes the gimmick is really, really fun, but SotN is probably still the best starting point for that reason. It gives you the most 'complete' Metroidvania experience.
SotN and AoS are both very similar in terms of gameplay, so either is fine on that count.
If you care about CV story at all (lol) SotN is definitely what to start with though.
Both games are fucking incredible though, so play them both. Not to mention, they're pretty short, even on a first playthrough.
Awesome series.
I'd rank the Classicvanias ones like this: III > Rondo > I > IV > Bloodlines > Chronicles > Gameboy > Arcade
And the Metroidvanias like this: Symphony > the rest
Best song everyone?
For me it's Iron Blue Intention, specifically the Bloodlines version. Shit gets me so pumped.
1 is easily, easily the best. 3 should in theory beat it but the price it pays for the huge amount of content is that certain areas are undeniably cheap and less well designed. 1 is solid and fair from start to finish, very few games manage such a consistent standard of quality without dropping it at any point.
3 is still very good however and I would say easily second best.
Of the metroidvanias, which I think aren't remotely as good, I would say Aria is the best followed by CotM, which I think is noteworthy because it felt much closer to the classic games in many ways and it would have been interesting to see where the series would have went if it stayed closer to that style.
Bloody Tears, I don't care if it's overrated it's still fantastic.
Name entry song from Rondo.
just beat iron golem and got the wall kick, does this game get any better?
youtube.com
I think this is very underrated and is one of the best composed songs in the franchise.
lol hipster ass faggot
original cv games sucked when they came out you tryhard fag
Absolutely terrible attempt
Count yourself lucky you even got a reply
Is Castlevania dead forever? Or is there a chance Konami will sell the IP at some point?
Games that were neat 25+ years ago, but now are basically indie trash tier as the series refuse to innovate and eventually went completely artistically bankrupt. There hasn't been a relevant Castlevania game in almost 20 years.
Loved it growing up, but it's been dead too long. I've lost all interest in getting a new game now, especially after lords of cuck ruined the franchises image.
1,3,4, SOTN and Aria are my favorites, dracula X/rondo are good too.
The only thing we know for sure is that Konami fucking hates you.
worst is The Castlevania Adventure
Just to add to this I hate him too
Fog-enshrouded Nightscape
There are too many to even list, so I'll go with the obscure hipster option
I think my favorite of the series is the x68000 version of Akumajou Dracula, aka Castlevania Chronicles' Original Mode. Great level design: it is constantly throwing new challenges at you and ramps up in difficulty very nicely. Music is also probably some of the best in the series (who doesn't love gettin' hyped for a MOON FIGHT?).
Of the SOTN-style, I think the ones I have enjoyed the most are Order of Ecclesia and SOTN, of which I played for the first time a few months ago. SOTN is easy as hell and has kinda wonky level design, but the production values really carry it to a whole new level. OoE is satisfyingly challenging, and it's fun to go through its more concentrated level-based structure, as a change of pace to what at that point had been a bit of a played-out idea.
casual gamer babby who needs his hand held detected
You know what needs to be said? Portrait of Ruin is not the worst. Not the best obviously, but it was a major step in the right direction. Cool new look instead of cheap SOTN copypasta sprites for a lot of the enemies, difficulty was in that comfy zone that both Arias fucked up in badly, basically went from super hard to spam the fuck out of souls to cheap your way to the ending instead of having any middle ground, and the RPG quest spin to travelling the castle as a hub with lots of classicvania locales was pretty boss. Its missing like another 4th of the castle, but I do commend them giving the map an actual diagram that looked like a castle on a cliffside, and they could have not been so fucking stupid with literally half the game being a mirror world, but it was an excellent proof of concept that deserved more. And it goes without saying that it had the best fucking soundtrack of the GBA/DS era hands down.
Unless the pachinko business fails for them, I doubt it.
Even then, they might just hold onto it just out of spite and pride when the company goes under so no one can have them. But that's just me being a pessimist.
youtube.com
Sorrow's Distortion is a close second for me, but this is just me being a massive faggot for OoE.
Rushed to post in this thread, so I just have to reply. Yeah Curse of Darkness is underrated, its like Portrait. Fucked up a ton of wasted potential, but its a great proof of concept.
I appreciated that the moment they played this song, they managed to make the cheesy day/night transition text from Castlevania 2 sound badass.
Order of Ecclesia's soundtrack kicked into high gear for the final stages. Definitely the best soundtrack on the DS. My favorite's probably portrait of ruin though. Dawn of Sorrow was too grindy, nothing was ever a challenge due to my autism needing 9/9 souls if it was possible.
I recently played the metroidvania games for the first time in a semi marathont and tought
Symphony > Aria > Portrait > Dawn > Order > Circle > Harmony. The only classicvanias I've played are 1 and Rondo, 1 was okay but Rondo was fucking great.
OoE's definitely has the best OST of the DS titles. I do like PoR too, it's a solid game. I just prefer Ecclesia over Portrait mainly due to how fluid Glyph combat feels compared to how Jonathon and Charlotte fight. I haven't played Dawn though, I heard it's a decent game but suffers from a gimmick that involves drawing complex shapes on the touch pad, but has one of the best post-game modes of the 3.
And Aria's a good game. It's not as good as I hoped, it does feel very grindy, and fuck the garden level. I don't know how you were supposed to figure out the pattern to get to Death. But playing it did make me appreciate the Glyph system in Ecclesia even more.
>Curse of Darkness is dramatically underrated
Yes.
Dawn of Sorrow has the same issues as Aria, but with too much bloat. Personally gonna say that PoR>OoE>DoS is the correct order, if only because of personal stupid reasons, despite considering them all great games. Its like Zelda, ranking them just ends up with you trying to figure out how which one is better and ending in failure.
happy birthday
I didn't have a problem with the glyph system, it's just a bit awkward to pull out the stylus at the end of a boss fight and draw it, at worst the boss gets some health back, and it's relic of how every series' first foray onto DS involved some gimmicky use of the touchscreen.
Castlevania is one of the best and the ABSOLUTE most mismanaged franchise ever.
It's 2016 where is our Castlevania collection, it's license to print money. you put Arcadevanias on one diss, the metroidvanias on another and 3dvanias on a third with a decent omake section with art and music that's like 2 million seller games and a 3rd decent seller or roll the dice and put all together for $60
1. Nocturne in the Moonlight
2. Order of Ecclesia
3. Simon's Quest
other games are shit.
>Nocturne in the Moonlight
??
>muh metroidvania!!
That term has to die before super metroid castlevania had these maps
Konami doesn't care, they would fuck the Castlevania and Silent Hill fans in the ass if they could.
here's your (you) have a good birthday, friend
I yearn for the day that Nintendo just says fuck it, and buys Catlevania from Konami and gets everyone on board for several new entries. I mean it when I say that I believe they are the only ones who can properly do it justice, despite all their missteps they know the value of the franchise and what can be done with it.
And because the topic brought me to listening to some OSTs:

That fucking drop when the Drums kick in for Crucific held close, good fucking lord. GOOD FUCKING LORD.
>HE IS GOING ALL OUT

And I know there's a Harmony of Despair version, but they downplayed the organs in it.
Castlevania is only for erotic pachinko violence now
Same as Symphony of the Night but with extra content.
Its best game.
But if you play it wrong, its painful.
You should at the least grind the Blood Swords to get the Mars card.
also

castlevania has too many good tracks to choose a favorite
Even if you can't licensces NES to other consoles, nothing is stopping a low effort remake.
720p, sprites, reuse the better existing sprites.
I think even the Wii Software stuff that was Online Only sold to several times investment cost.
first one best one
And performance issues, massive loading times, bugs, graphical and sound issues and other technical issues out the ass
And the new content is markedly inferior and out of place
that's just the japanese name of sotn little buddy.
What do you fags think of romscout?
Rondo of Blood is the absolute best in the series, it has a great balance of challenge, good controls, and engaging plot. Great for both vets and beginners of the series.
Symphony of the Night is just Castlevania for casuals. Highly overrated.
single player video games aren't about "challenge"
if you want challenge play against other people or games like racing where you're playing against your own skill
poor, weak argument and the only one people can even try to make against one of the greatest games of all time.
>single player video games aren't about "challenge"
Yeah sure
>single player video games aren't about "challenge"
Why not? The developer challenges you to beat the game.
T H E G R E A T E S T
Yeah, Ninja Gaiden (xbox) agrees.
New Castlevania game when?
I liked the old Richter design, then they turned him into a complete fuckboy. In all honesty, the new design style made me hate the series, especially SotN.
