Custom Robo... truly a product of its time. Years too late, Nintendo concieved this game to appeal more to tweens and teenagers than kids. It was an attempt to shake their uncool kiddie reputation, combined with Killer Instinct and Geist. Do you think they succeeded?

With CR absolutely. Played it multiple times in middle school. Fell in love with it. Played again recently and its just as good as I remembered. Story was still engaging, there were some genuinely funny moments and dialogue, and the game shines in off moments (ie. trying not to spill spaghetti when dining with harrys sister, getting heckled by harry and marcia for shilling for steel hearts after the tourney, applying for your class d license, etc. you literally felt like you were living the day to day life and were trying to hold down a job as a robo commander.

Yes. The story is actually pretty damn good. Tons of dialouge if you go around talking to people.
Protip: Don't go straight home after the end of the day, the people in other areas have some pretty good things to say.

There's Danball Senki/Little Battlers eXperience. Gameplay/style is different but it's as close as you're gonna get to Custom Robo again. Good robot designs, too.
