What games can be considered as "cult classics"? Like movies have cult classics like the Big Lebowski and the Shaun of the Dead, but what games fit into the same category?
I think Dead Rising is a pretty good example
What games can be considered as "cult classics"...
i'd say Halo 3 is a cult classic, that or Reach
WORT WORT WORT
Any game with a small but dedicated fanbase
Earthbound is an example
Those would probably just be remembered as standard classics.
ODST seems more in line to be considered a cult classic
Hmpt
FANTASTIC
*whew*
Would Tribes count in that regard?
God Hand? I only ever see people praise it here on Sup Forums.
No Man's Sky
Titanfall 2
Dark Souls 2
Binary Domain
E.Y.E.
Battleborn
Is it just me or does almost every Capcom series outside of Street Fighter and Megaman fit into it?
>Darkstalkers
>Dead Rising
>Devil May Cry
>Ghost's n Goblins
>Dragon's Dogma

Left 4 Dead
Read Dead Revolver
Fallout New Vegas
SSB Melee
Street Fighter 3rd Strike or whatever
GTA San Andreas
Here's a question for discussion though, if something is a sequel can it be cult? The defining aspect is a tight knit super dedicated fan base that usually isn't too big, but if something is a sequel in a (relatively) popular series that has a continued following is it cult, or just the series sitting on its laurels with its best piece? Ther term 'classic' to me means it has to be at least separated by some degree or unique, but even in my list there's shit like NV that I think qualifies even though it's part of a longer series.
Killing off the hot asian chick was by far the worst
Deadly premonition
Jet Set Radio Future
The Warriors
Killer is Dead
mien negar
Golden Sun
Baten Kaitos
God Hand
FNAF
Patapon
The World Ends with You
Tactics Ogre: Let us Cling Together
Majora's Mask
These are all games that I think had strong followings on release, but the fanbase over the years has really shrunk down to diehards. Seems that way when they come up in discussion anyway.
With no access to erotica shots.... doomed from the start. Thanks capcom USA!!!

Both Kane & Lynch games are cult classics, whether you like it or not.
Planescape: Torment
Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura
Arx Fatalis
Anachronox
I just want more ZOE
:(
Kane and Lynch were boss ass games.
>Link's Awakening
>cult classic
What? That one of the most popular games not just out of Zelda but for the gameboy in general.
No?
Clutch as fuck
Wind Waker
People hated it when it was released but over time more and more people realized just how charming and unique it was
Life is Strange.
Absolutely not.
Xenogears
There are plenty of sequels that pretty much defined the game and are better remembered. You usually see it when there's a generation gap between games and then the third never comes out.
No Zelda came can be considered a cult classic
Nier
Drakengard
Solatorobo: Red the Hunter
Infinite Space
Most of those are just "classics" not "cult classics"
How has nobody mentioned the Drakengard/Neir series? It's the definition of cult classic
>genuinely sub-par game?
check
>has one or two somewhat redeeming facets?
check
>small but dedicated fanbase?
check
ok
*Grabs by throat* Back the fuck off?
No?
This.
*Stabs in balls* I said back the fuck off???
No?
Cult classics promise nothing but deliver massively. They also have a decent fanbase filled with diehard fans
Only EYE really fits that
I've been playing Killer 7 and Pathologic lately.
Those probably count.
are my nigga.
Stay enlightened. Don't leave Sup Forums. You're one of the good ones.

>How to trigger a fighting game faster than you can say Super Smash Brothers
Divine taste in PS2 games, Allow me to share my own.
Enjoy the ZoE pachinko
Gaming does not have cult classics.
Why? Because most popular games are always divided into different consoles and user base, so not everybody could enjoy then.
The closest we have to a Cult Classic is the first 3 Mario Brothers and Gen 1 Pokemin games because literally, everybody played then
>Games that were absolutely shit upon at release.
I regret nothing.
>I don't know what a cult classic is
Kotor 1 was too popular to be considered a "cult classic"
Baldur's Gate 2
Fallout 2
Planescape: Torment
HoMM 3
Old PC games are weird, are the ones that are still popular today considered Cult Classics? I would think that Ur-Quan Masters would definitely be considered one, though on the other hand the game was insanely popular (For an ancient PC game). And Would MoO 2 qualify as a Cult Classic? What About Jedi Knight?
...
...
Mount and Blade Warband
VtMB
FNV
Yeah
Battle Network series
Pokemon series
Deus Ex
FEAR
Goooooooood
I've literally never played a pokemon game, not counting pokemon go.
They just don't seem that interesting to me. Neither did Go but it was a reason to get out of the house without dying out of boredom
None.
Game (or anything else) can be either classic (widely acclaimed) or cult (loved by specific group).
Term ,,cult cassic'' is condradicting itself.
I'd say it has too many sequels. It's a full blow franchise at this point.
Binary Domain. Fuck everyone who missed out on it.
...
>jehuty will never help another pilot out of an impossible situation again
The future turned out to be pretty fucking shit user.
What is vidya kino?
Gothic

>Minecraft
>Second best selling game of all time, universally praised, merch in fucking Gamestop
>Cult
Deadly Premonition
>You will never find the hidden Korean portal to Narnia
Why even live?
Not exaggerating but the Half Life series.
Shadow of the colossus?
Well it does have a dedicated community of people who played it for years and never got bored, and still play and experiment with it, try to build even more impressive things (hell someone even built a working computer in Minecraft), make videos etc. And all that despite the fact that the game exists for years already and can hardly be called anything new
Everyone I've met who likes it, loves it.
Easily one of my favorites desu, but I could understand the criticism.
Probably not popular enough to be even a cult classic tho
What defines a cult classic?
I assume it's stuff that's good, but slipped under the radar for "GOTY" tier shit that normal people like.
viewtiful joe
okami
anything by clover
natural selection
Hello? Anyone there? Anyone there? Anyone there? Hello? Hello? Anyone there? Hello?
Yeah mang. I wish 2 kept the high body count.
this
Cult classics don't get sequels
Demon's Souls was before the series got so big
Dorf Fortress maybe
Dragons Dogma may had been before pc release
I was going to say Psychonauts but someone already said it. I think Monkey Island would qualify as well.
I think Dink Smallwood fits the bill.
Fallout 1-2
Diablo 2
Quake 3
arcanum
*unzips dick* well I warned you kiddo
This
Just like those movies you mentioned, I think DR1 is 10/10 but many fucking hate it because they're to impatient IMO
Soul Nomad
>disregarded at every turn by it's own developer despite being one of their best games
>very few people actually know about it due to that, universally they all like it
>every other game by the dev has multiple ports, Soul Nomad has zero ports
It's the very definition of a diamond in the rough.
Hell yeah
This is the first game in this thread I havent heard of
