Ds3 item descriptions state "Twisted great Hammer associated with Smough, the last knight to remain at his post, guarding the ruined cathedral."

That doesn't prove that smough was real.

Ornstein's soul also says he was guarding the cathedral. Those two item descriptions dont prove either of them were alive or dead when the player arrives.

Ornstein, Smough, Gwyndolin, and Gwenevere were all not real, so I'm guessing the whole place was some sort of illusion. I'm going to attribute that to Miyazaki being a hack, but I think he didn't give a fuck. The same shit happened with Dark Souls 1 pre and post DLC with what Artorias did.

I assume Orny was illusion since its implied the real one was in das2 as a boss or 3 as a corpse

It has been shown earilier in dark souls 1 that you can give your soul away, Ornstein gave his souls to Gwyndolin wich he used to make the illusion of Ornstein.

It also says in 1 that he wasn't allowed to be a Knight so it's possible he was made a knight by Gwyndolin afterwards and was actually an illusion.

Robin Williams was in Souls 1 but not in Souls 3, so he probably was an illusion all along.

It was ok. I've only gotten to play for a weekend, but I feel like I got my money's worth: Granted, it's less than I had hoped for, but what I got is pretty good.

I'm sure when I get around to playing Bloodborne, I'll be one of the shitters shitposting about how short this DLC was in comparison to ToH.

I hate when sequels to things try to retroactively remove significance from events of the original's story. Ornstein and Smough was one of the most memorable moments of DS1, and for the sequels to come by and say, "NUH UH, THEY WERE JUST SHITTY MIRAGES LMAO, THE REAL ORNSTEIN SURVIVED TO BECOME EITHER A MEDIOCRE EARLY GAME OPTIONAL BOSS IN DS2 OR WAS WITH THE NAMELESS KING THIS WHOLE TIME" just cheapens it. Their stories should've absolutely been left alone in the sequels.

Everyone agrees that the game drops in quality after O&S, except for the DLC area.
