Does anyone seriously discuss anything in these threads or is it just someone hoping they will?

havent done a thing in too long... fuck man how do i into necromancy

most threads get actual dev discussion, but not until the thread's about to die.

Today is the last day of my game's halloween event.

There's something about the timer that isn't quite working right but it doesn't break gameplay. I just haven't figured out what is causing it yet.

Progress; haven't worked on it in a while

For a long time I thought I could just figure everything out on my own but it led to laziness. Are there any good tutorials for getting started making something like a 2D platformer? Do any of the engines/tools work better for newfags?

so I am currently on making my level in where you are in a university and that uni has all religious building possible since its PC and wants to cater to its wide demography. I am kinda worried about the mosque since its a shooter. should I put it in or not. no troll

Barely got a thing going, but I'm more focused on designing characters/creatures over anything else, since my focus is the 3D art side of making a game. I'm really struggling for inspiration.

What are you using?

i'm having real progress in my mind.

about 1000x more than /agdg/

a mouse

>bought game maker bundle
>fuck yea let's dev
>open it
>"holy shit"
>haven't touched it since
Send help. I just want to make games about cute busty girls.

can i use game maker to create a game making software?

if you want to make a vn just use power point :^)

Hand Topology makes me want to leap out of the window

Gamemaker Studio.

Do it faggot

I'm terrible at organic modeling.
I can't model a face or hands for shit.

Just start slow, user.
There are Game Maker Tutorials.
Then once you got the basic shit down pat, make your own project WITHOUT art assets, just temporary stuff and when you've got a rudimentary plan and basis for what you want, start making/commissioning art.

Are you using Max for the face as well?
Because that would be pretty difficult, you should get zbrush or something like that if you want to sculpt organic models.

I'm making a shitty BN clone in GM, i managed to do the basic overworld collision and animate the characters (though it still needs some fine tuning).

Not them but I find Zbrush confusing to even use. modelling a face in Max may not be useful but it's the only way I can do it.

Yeah, I used Max for the face. I would learn Zbrush but I'm still in the process of learning modeling to begin with, this would be the first model I finished (or am close to finishing anyway).

use blender. subdevision surface modifier is your friend

Nice

I've been stalled out working on a save/checkpoint system. Once I get that working the rest should be comparatively simple...

Holy shit, you are alive

Any recommanded guides for making graphics ?

God damnit I'm fucking shit I can't draw something decent

Either go pixelshit or you could follow a guide on how to hire an artist.

It looks good so far, but a question.
How many keys are in this game? I watch a lot of lets plays and I've heard a common complaint of having to find a key to just to find another key in the next area.

thx user, I'll try that

after years of my programmer telling me lies and excuses and getting literally no work done I was finally smart enough to tell him to fuck off and scrapped the project so I can finally get on with my life, best progress I ever made

What's your game?

Better question: Is the game gonna be linear or have options beyond
>key here to key here to key here to puzzle to key here to freedom

I'm going to do my darndest today!

It is, I agree. And without a tablet it's pretty much shit to use as well. But still, if organic is part of what you want to do, you're probably going to have to tough that shit out sooner or later.

No problem; if that's what you're comfortable with you should go for it. I would personally advise you to start out with doing props, though. 3ds Max is mostly used for hard surface stuff and environment modelling IIRC. Practicing with that stuff is good to get a hang of how subdivions, edge flow, UV's and all that goodness.
Looks decent so far, though. How much time you spent on it so far?

Right now, 3. The demo I have is pretty short and I was doing some basic dev work to make sure all of the elements I need to make a basic horror game are functional. Having keys to open doors in order to progress is pretty standard.

Haven't implemented any real puzzles per se yet. Trying to avoid going too far into tropes of "BOO SPOOKY JUMPSCARE"

For what it's worth, link to the page hosting the demo at the moment.

You're right, once Christmas comes around and I'm off from College(The BritBong kind) I plan to dedicate time to learning Zbrush, even though detailed photorealistic models aren't my thing I know eventually I'll have to do them.

Ahh, I do like it so far, the less jumpscares the better they kind of tear up atmosphere in most indie horror games.

I don't post here as often but I still put plenty of work into the game.

btw got years worth of art assets if anyone wants them

share it nigga

Go for it mate; life all goes to shit after college if you don't have shit in order for a job. That's the boat I'm currently in.

I'd suggest you check out a bunch of Gumroad courses and see what they have, there should be more than enough stuff available for you to get started.

>How much time you spent on it so far?
It's been too long. Although to be fair I've only been working on this on and off, and I got the most of the UV mapping out of the way and did some rigging to test out deformations.
~2 1/2 months altogether I think

uploading may be a while

Pretty sickly actually, have got a two torches, stick and chest system working just like Zelda. Next comes polishing and mapping out a whole dungeon and shit

This all seems like way too much work. Is there a way to make a game without effort?

I'll check Gumroad out around that time, I think my tutor gave me a tutorial he put up on there for ZBrush as well. The biggest stopping force when it comes to my modelling is inspiration for creatures/objects for me, maybe ZBrush will give me some hope, heh.

Is it 2D? If the graphics and idea are solid I'll make that shit.

I wonder how are you so dedicated on maintaining this game, especially since player base is rather small.

No. Did Walt Disney sit on his ass and expect cartoons to appear? You just need the will to create bro

You're probably right, I'll get in to some tutorials first.

Well, if you're not good yet creatively, you can always model other people's concepts. I've gathered up a whole bunch of refs and other stuff from Pinterest over the course of about a year now. If anything, you can take inspiration from those pieces and make something new out of that.

Good enough, as long as you're working to improve. Mind you, I'm not a full-blown modeler myself so take my advice with a grain of salt. Graduated college with a degree in game design and found myself in the same limbo as most dumb shits that made the same mistake. But yeah, keep at it, and try to get to know people in the industry. Connections can get you a lot further than some people think

You giving them away for free or looking to work something out? I'd be interested in seeing what you have.

free im done

Oh sweet fucking Jesus.

I'm okay-ish with creativity and my drawing skill is average, I'd say my biggest weakness is trying to draw front and sides of faces (creatures or humanoid).

i want to make a game, but have no knowledge about coding, game design, or anything even remotely related to game development. where should start

Haven't touched gm:s in over a week because I've been working on my art

I'm trying my best. Though it seems like people don't really like my ideas or designs. Not that I'm much good at that to begin with, but I'm worried people won't even bother playing my stuff even if I get it finished.

Anyway I made these ornaments today. Only three more parts to go on this character.

Thanks for the advice user.
While I feel like shit for spending so much time on a model, I think I'm improving at a good rate.

Players still exist, that's enough for me.

>Ornaments
So you're making some sort of tech wizard/Robot Conquistador?

I restarted the project file in order to re-write every thing, and now everything is neater. I still have a lot of awful, hacky solutions for a lot of things but at least the logic of everything seems to work consistently.

Right now I'm thinking that I will eventually need to replace the x+hsp,y :x,y+vsp collision solution with racasts or something, because sometimes objects are moving quick enough that the hsp check is past small obstacles. No idea how I would actually go about doing that in Game Maker outside of making each collision check a for loop that iterates from 0 to hsp or 0 to vsp by some dynamically calculated interval, but that sounds inefficient as all hell, especially for multiple actors calling the collision script.

Ten-thousand hour rule, user, keep at it. Do some more "LOOMIS" or whatever artists recommend for anatomical reference nowadays.

All part of the process; artists can only grow by doing more art and each time you do, you'll get faster and more efficient doing it.

Anyway, I'm heading off since I got an early shift tomorrow. Good luck lads

Exactly.
With an electro shocking pike to ram up the players ass.

Working on assets, heres a render.

where can you legitimately shill your game?

Looks great, but very high poly.

It's pretty spooky knowing my light can be my death

Workin' on some kicks

I know they're not great - AGDG has been shitting on me for an hour now.
I'll keep trying.

...

That sounds wonderful.
Sell me on the rest of it.
And while a standstill spot like in your Gif is enjoyable to watch, it's more of an atmosphere setter and less something someone playing would stop and look about at. Good in theory, bad in execution.

reddit, write your games name on a cake and say you made it for your boyfriend who is a big fan

>try to get into programming
>read up a bunch of tutorials
>always give up after a day

>repeat 20 times

there are no classes I can take since I live in a town with like 2k people
what the fuck do I do

Shits looks great. Although I assume you going to Virtua Fighter style?
I would cut back most animation and get on to speed things up. That way the animation feels more responsive.

Write it down

Those kick stomp on the end, not sure m8

Your foot is too high on the initial frames here.
And someone wouldn't plant their foot forward after roundhousing a REALLY tall person. When they bring their foot back down, they'd plant that one forward.

>How's that game coming along?
Good! I just rewrote the sound effect system so now I can change in-game which events cause which sounds, so i can test different effects on things more easily without having to recompile.

I am. I'm definitely gonna do something with it. it's not just gonna be here for me to find 20 years from now or something. definitely not

Don't forget to make the cardboard box meow when you drop it.

get your shit together faggot

babby steps
learn by doing
set realistic goals, like "get something to appear on screen"
"make the thing move around and bounce off the sides of the window"
"make it follow the mouse"

>How's that game coming along?
I can't even make a simple dungeon crawler character controller. It's not looking good.

>My balls hurt
I'm so sorry.

Thanks, user!

>Although I assume you going to Virtua Fighter style?
Not really. I wasn't imagining any melee combat at all when I began, but it seemed like fun animations to attempt.
For now it's just graphics, but I'd like to make a sort of (action) adventure game, where you fly around in your airship and explore stuff.
The speed will probably be increased, though. I only slowed it down to get better control over everything.

Opinions noted. Will see if I can improve it.

stop giving up after a day

You're a bunch of trash who'll never achieve anything! Just kidding, it looks great

>It looks great
>Literally a cube who misreads move forward as back sometimes

N0ice. Action adventure is cool, but from what you done there I would encourage side scrolling, kind of like streets of rage, that would be rad to do again around this age.

Well it's better than absolutely nothing user :)

Ask questions here

More than the actual game dev general over on /vg/

Thanks.
I get what you say, but I just never liked those kind of games much, and you've got to have a bit of passion for the thing you do, to get anywhere (I think).

I made a boss theme for a cowboy-ish sort of boss
